Transfer talk: Liverpool confirm Sakho and Ilori signings

LONDON // Liverpool, the Premier League leaders, have signed Mamadou Sakho, the France international defender, and Tiago Ilori, the Portuguese centre-back, as the pair became the first confirmed permanent arrivals at a top English club on Monday's transfer deadline day.

Real Madrid fans flock to welcome record signing Bale

Thousands of Real Madrid fans flocked to the Bernabeu to welcome Gareth Bale today after the nine-times European champions sealed the purchase of the Wales winger from Tottenham Hotspur for what the London club said was a world record fee.

The summer's longest transfer saga finally ended on Sunday when Spurs announced they had sold Bale to Real for 100 million euros ($132 million) and the La Liga club confirmed he had agreed a six-year contract.

Arsenal target Abel Hernandez wants Palermo exit

Abel Hernandez has said he is ready to leave Palermo

The Gunners are poised for a frantic deadline day bringing new faces to the Emirates, with Mesut Ozil set to make a £42.5million move from Real Madrid.

And while Arsenal had two bids rejected for Liverpool's Luis Suarez this summer, they could bring in his international team-mate Hernandez instead.

And the 23-year-old seems keen to leave Serie A side Palermo, paving the way for Arsenal to firm up their interest after making initial enquiries.

50,000 people affected as flooding devastates Niger

MASSIVE flooding has caused widespread devastation in Niger – wiping out entire villages and killing at least 20 people, reports children’s charity Plan International.

The floods, caused by heavy rain, have affected more than 50,000 people in large parts of the country.

The eastern provinces of Maradi and Zinder are among the worst-hit, while the capital Niamey is also under threat.

Thousands of families, many of whom were affected by last year’s food crisis, have had their new crops destroyed - just six weeks before they were due to be harvested.

“Cereal stocks were washed away; if seedlings were planted, they have now been damaged or destroyed on flooded rice paddies,” says Mamoudou Madougou, Plan’s emergency response manager in Niger.

“Buildings have collapsed, there’s nothing left in some areas,” he adds.

The rains are expected to continue and it is feared the situation could get much worse.

Plan has already deployed aid workers to some of the affected areas.

“Eighty per cent of the worst affected people are children, who are in need of shelter, food and sanitation,” says Mr Madougou.

“Most families are sheltering in schools and mosques and need assistance to re-locate in time for the start of the school year in October.

“Plan’s focus will be on children – making sure they are safe from disease, have food supplies and are receiving the emotional support they need as the rains continue,” he adds.

Media at Mandela house told to stay in corner

The growing media contingent outside former president Nelson Mandela's Johannesburg home was instructed to keep well away from the house's entry points on Monday.

"The media must stay 50m away from entrances, you have been confined to that corner," said an official, who did not give his name, while pointing to an area opposite the house.

Mandela's Houghton home was a national key point and was under constant surveillance, the official said, while manning the house's smaller gate.

Entry to the house and parking within nine meters of its vicinity was restricted to vehicles and people with official clearance.

Johannesburg metro police officers patrolled the streets, ensuring the media and their equipment did not obstruct traffic.

On Sunday the presidency said Mandela had been discharged from hospital.

A large media contingent gathered outside to watch his return, and police were present.

Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said Mandela's condition remained critical and "at times unstable".

His home had been reconfigured to ensure he received the correct care. Some staff who had been at the hospital would care for him at home.

Mandela was admitted to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria on 8 June this year with a recurring lung infection.

Butterfly inspires new nanotechnology

Butterfly inspires new nanotechnology

By mimicking microscopic structures in the wings of a butterfly, an international research team has developed a device smaller than the width of a human hair that could make optical communication faster and more secure.
The researchers, from Swinburne University of Technology in Australia and Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany, have produced a photonic crystal that can split both left and right circularly polarised light.
The design for this crystal was inspired by the Callophrys Rubi butterfly, also known as the Green Hairstreak. This butterfly has 3D nano-structures within its wings which give them their vibrant green colour. Other insects also have nano-structures that provide colour, but the Callophrys Rubi has one important difference.
"This butterfly's wing contains an immense array of interconnected  coiled springs that form a unique optical material. We used this concept to develop our photonic crystal device," Swinburne PhD graduate, Dr Mark Turner, said.
Using 3D laser nano-technology, the Swinburne researchers built a photonic crystal with properties that don't exist in naturally occurring crystals, specifically one that works with circular polarisation. This miniature device contains over 750,000 tiny polymer nano-rods.
The photonic crystal acts as a miniature polarising beamsplitter, similar to a device invented by Scottish scientist William Nicol in 1828. Polarising beamsplitters used in modern technology - such as telecommunications, microscopy and multimedia - are built from naturally occurring crystals, which work for linearly polarised light but not circularly polarised light.
"We believe we have created the first nano-scale photonic crystal chiral beamsplitter," Director of the Centre for Micro-Photonics at Swinburne, Professor Min Gu, said.
"It has the potential to become a useful component for developing integrated photonic circuits that play an important role in optical communications, imaging, computing and sensing.
"The technology offers new possibilities for steering light in nano-photonic devices and takes us a step closer towards developing optical chips that could overcome the bandwidth bottleneck for ultra-high speed optical networks."
The research has been published in the journal Nature Photonics.

Baby rescued after being dumped in cemetery

Cape Town - A Nigerian newborn baby has been discovered and rescued after it was dumped by its mother in a cemetery in Kazaure, a report said on Monday.

According to Nigeria’s Daily Post, Muhammad Gidado, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps commandant in the state yesterday said the baby's mother was nabbed on Friday at Ilallah quarters in Kazaure town.

The woman, who was a maid in the area, was arrested following a tip-off by divorcees, widows, housemaids and prostitutes residing in the area.

"We were able to identify and arrest the mother of the baby girl that was abandoned at the graveyard after conducting a thorough investigation among divorcees, widows, housemaids and prostitutes living in the area," Gidado said.

Gidado said a medical examination at the General Hospital, Hadejia had revealed that the suspect was the biological mother of the abandoned baby.

"She also confessed to being the mother, as well as dumping the baby", he said.

Housewife pours hot water on mate

30-year-old housewife, Hadiza Abba, on Monday appeared before an Area Court in Jos, Plateau, for allegedly causing grievous hurt to her co-wife.

“The suspect boiled hot water and poured on one Mrs Zainab Abba that they are married to the same husband.”

The police First Information Report (FIR) stated that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 4, at about 3p.m.

The FIR said that on Aug. 13, at about 5p.m, one Sagiru Maishanu went to the `C` Division police station in Jos and reported that the accused had committed the offence.

It said that the complainant, who was the brother of the victim, told the police that the action of the accused had made his sister to sustain severe burnt.

“The victim has sustained severe burn on her back and breast, and she was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

“The action of the accused has contravened Section 242 of the Penal Code law,” the FIR said.

When the FIR was read to the accused, she pleaded not guilty to the charge and her Counsel, Mr A. S. Umar, applied to the court for her bail.

Umar said that his client was presumed innocent until proven otherwise by the court and that she was ready to provide competent surety if given the bail.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr Mubas Rafan, objected to the bail application of the accused, saying that the police was still investigating the matter.

Rafan said that the victim had sustained serious hurt from the action of the accused and she did not deserve bail.

The Presiding Officers, Mrs Halima Bala and Mrs Mary Izang, however, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

The court adjourned the case to Sept. 16 for hearing.

Okorocha to speak on abortion law Tuesday

“Governor Okorocha will speak on Rescue Mission Projects and the purported state law on abortion, among other issues”, Offor told Vanguard in a telephone chat yesterday.

Continuing, the DCS equally disclosed that church leaders from the Catholic, Anglican and Pentecostal families were equally expected at the event.
“Also invited to this event are our revered Catholic, Anglican and Pentecostal bishops”, Mr. Offor said.

Answering another question, the DCS urged the citizenry to note that “the Government of Imo State has not legalized abortion in the state”.

While Offor was not prepared to be drawn into any further discussion on the controversial abortion law, most critics of the administration were insistent that the Governor carefully and secretly singed the obnoxious document.

Already, the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace, Dr. Anthony J. V. Obinna, had during a press conference in Owerri last week, called for the immediate abrogation of what he called “the anti-life law”.

Apart from the Archbishop’s demand, priests serving in the province has equally held a meeting in Owerri to strategize on how to battle the abortion law.

As a the time of going to press, it was not clear if Archbishop Obinna and his priests would attend the proposed event, where Okorocha was expected to explain his stand on the law.
