Former Akure Monarch Address To Gov. Mimiko In 18-Page Apology Letter

source: informationNG

The deposed former Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oluwadare Adepoju Adesina, has written an emotional letter of consideration to the Ondo state government to reinstate him as the paramount ruler.

Mr. Adepoju was deposed after beating and pouring hot ash on his wife, Olori Bolanle, in May 2010. .

His battered wife (pictured) took ill and subsequently died in July 2011

In the letter, obtained exclusively by SaharaReporters through Adepoju Adesina’s lawyer, Barr. Olusola Oke, the deposed Deji appealed to Governor Olusegun Mimiko, for whom he claimed to have worked tirelessly during his election campaign, to consider his plea.

“I must passionately plead with your Excellence to remember how well I stood behind you and fought with you towards ensuring that you won the election and to ensure that you also recovered your stolen mandate,” he said.

Recounting how he was deposed from the town because he allegedly poured a concoction on his estranged late wife, Olori Bola Adepoju Adesina, he said the avoidable communication gap was the reason behind the widely-reported incident.

He claimed that the escalated fracas between him and the late Olori was misconstrued by the press which, he also alleged, refused to report his own version of the story.

Dr. Ige Ogunleye, the Chairman of the Osupa Ruling house which Adesina hails from, confirmed receipt of the letter, but he declined further comment.

Many sources in the ruling house disclosed that the letter comes at an important time, as the Deji throne is vacant. It has been previously learnt from a kingmaker in the palace that the Osupa Ruling House is the next family to present candidates for the throne.

Chiefs in Akure will this week complete traditional rites for the late Oba Adebiyi Adegboye Adesida. A source revealed that the daughter of the deceased, Princess Adetutu, is expected to be installed as Regent of Akure pending the emergence of a new king.

The palace source a newsman that the belated installation was on account of family exigencies.

“The issue is that Princess Adetutu was nursing her baby when the sudden death of her father was pronounced. But immediately after the whole rites she might will be installed as the regent of the kingdom this week or early in the New Year,” the source said.

But an aide to the Lisa of Akure, High Chief James Olusoga, said in a phone interview that the traditional rites would be completed with the installation of a regent, most likely between Christmas and the New Year festival period.

With just 23 days since the death of Adebiyi Adesida, the jostling for the throne has begun at a frantic pace, with members of the Osupa Ruling House lobbying kingmakers for the vacant sit.

While some seem to favour the return of the deposed Adesina to the throne, others object, fearing victimisation should he re-emerge the king.

In the letter, however, the former and perhaps future Deji seems to have leant his lessons of his experience and reconciled with those who worked against him.

Dated December 19, it was addressed to Governor Olusegun Mimiko through his Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).

It was copied to the Deputy Governor, Ali Olanusi; the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Samuel Adesina; the State Chief Judge, Sehinde Kumuyi; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bamiduro Dada; and the Akure Council of Chiefs through Lisa of Akure, High Chief James Olusoga.

Google blocks child porn in 100,000 searches, plans filter for YouTube

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt today said his company's search engine has made it far more difficult to find images of child pornography and that Google is developing a technology that will identify children being abused in YouTube videos.

"While no algorithm is perfect—and Google cannot prevent pedophiles adding new images to the Web—these changes have cleaned up the results for over 100,000 queries that might be related to the sexual abuse of kids,"

UK Prime Minister David Cameron recently called on search engines to impose a blacklist of search terms related to child sexual abuse. Microsoft's Bing was "the first to introduce pop-up warnings for people in the UK who seek out online images of child abuse" back in July. The UK is also forcing Internet service providers to roll out filters targeting all porn.

Google's changes aren't just for the UK. "[W]e will soon roll out these changes in more than 150 languages, so the impact will be truly global," Schmidt wrote. In addition to the 100,000 search queries mentioned above, Google is now showing warnings for more than 13,000 queries. "These alerts make clear that child sexual abuse is illegal and offer advice on where to get help," Schmidt wrote.

Schmidt noted that "Google and Microsoft have been working with law enforcement for years to stop pedophiles sharing illegal pictures on the Web." In this case, Schmidt credited Microsoft for sharing its picture detection technology with Google to help its rival better identify pictures of children being sexually abused.

To prevent false positives, Google has employees reviewing photos before blocking them. "This is because computers can't reliably distinguish between innocent pictures of kids at bathtime and genuine abuse. So we always need to have a person review the images. Once that is done—and we know the pictures are illegal—each image is given a unique digital fingerprint," Schmidt wrote.

Google also has a plan to target child pornography videos. "[P]edophiles are increasingly filming their crimes. So our engineers at YouTube have created a new technology to identify these videos," he wrote. "We're already testing it at Google, and in the new year we hope to make it available to other Internet companies and child safety organisations."

Guinness World Record for heart transplant patient

John McCafferty
A British man has entered the record books as the worlds longest-surviving heart transplant patient.

John McCafferty, 71, has surpassed the previous Guinness World Record of 30 years, 11 months and 10 days set by an American man who died in 2009.

Mr McCafferty was told he had five years to live when he underwent the life-saving operation at Harefield Hospital in Middlesex 31 years ago.

He says his record should give hope to others awaiting transplants. Mr McCafferty, from Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire, said: “I want this world record to be an inspiration to anyone awaiting a heart transplant and to those who, like me, have been fortunate enough to have had one.
“My advice is always to be hopeful, to look ahead with a positive mind, and, of course, to follow the expert medical advice.”

Mr McCafferty received his new heart on October 20, 1982 in a procedure carried out by world-renowned surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub.

He had been diagnosed, aged 39, with dilated cardiomyopathy – one of the most common causes of heart failure. It leads to scarring of the heart wall and damage to the muscle, which causes the heart to become weakened and enlarged, preventing it from pumping efficiently.

The first ever successful heart transplant operation was performed in South Africa in 1967 by Prof Christiaan Neethling Barnard and a team of 30 physicians at the Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. The patient, Louis Washkansky, survived for 18 days with the new heart.

POLITICAL TENSION: Al-Mustapha challenges Obj to public debate

Major Hamza Al-Mustapha

Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late Head-of-State, Gen. Sani Abacha, has challenged ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, to a public debate on any issue concerning Nigeria.

Al-Mustapha threw the challenge in an interview with the Hausa Service of the Voice of America, monitored in Abuja, on Wednesday.

The former CSO was reacting to news reports about portions of a letter written by Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan, alleging that snipers were being trained in North Korea.

He explained that he was not around when Obasanjo’s letter became public, but read about it in the media.

The military officer said ex-President Obasanjo knows that he knows Nigeria as much as he (Obasanjo) knows the country. As such, he was ready to face the former President anywhere in the world to discuss Nigeria.

Al-Mustapha said “first of all, he (Obasanjo) did not mention me by name in his letter. Secondly, he knows that “I know Nigeria as much as he does, if he has something to tell me, I want him to come out and tell me straight.
“He should ask me or challenge me, I challenge him to (discuss) anything about Nigeria that he wants to talk about even long before he became Head-of-State (1976-1979), I am ready to meet him in public anywhere in the world”.

Samsung Galaxy S5 5.25-inch QHD screen enters production

The S5 looks set to add a QHD display

With the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date now mooted to be just a matter of weeks away, latest reports have suggested the phone’s 5.25-inch QHD screen has already entered production.

A step up in both size and quality over the 5-inch Full HD display on the Samsung Galaxy S4, the reported Samsung Galaxy S5 panel is said by Korean media to have entered production as the manufacturer readies itself for a Q1 flagship phone unveiling.

While the S4 boasted a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, now the standard for high-end flagship phones, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will reportedly host a QHD panel with a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, This screen is said to offer a 560 pixels-per-inch image density, a move that would make it a leader of the smartphone scene.

Contrary to recent reports that the Samsung Galaxy S5 would see the Korean manufacturer move to cheaper LCD panels, the 5.25-inch QHD offering is said to be an AMOLED offering.

What’s more, claims that the Samsung Galaxy S5’s 5.25-inch QHD panel has entered production reaffirms reports earlier this weeks that the S5 will not play host to a curved display like the recent Samsung Galaxy Round offering.

One of many Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours to do the rounds in recent weeks, the S5’s specs sheet will reportedly pair the high-end display with a new 64-bit processor, 3GB of RAM and a 16-megapixel rear-mounted camera.

Elsewhere, the S5 has been tipped to run Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS alongside an all new metal form factor that will see the handset better compete with the market leading iPhone 5S.

Here Is Edward Snowden's Christmas Message

Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden has given a short Christmas address, broadcast on the UK's Channel 4 news, from his temporary asylum in Russia.
The 30-year-old American is wanted for taking hundreds of thousands of classified documents and is credited for starting a necessary debate about government surveillance in the digital, post-9/11 world.
His basic message is against mass surveillance, and he goes full Orwell: "A child born today will ... never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves."
Here's the transcript:
Hi, and Merry Christmas. I'm honored to have the chance to speak with you and your family this year.
Recently, we learned that our governments, working in concert, have created a system of worldwide mass surveillance, watching everything we do.
Great Britain's George Orwell warned us of the danger of this kind of information. The types of collection in the book -- microphones and video cameras, TVs that watch us -- are nothing compared to what we have available today. We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go.
Think about what this means for the privacy of the average person. A child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They'll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves -- an unrecorded, unanalyzed thought. And that's a problem, because privacy matters. Privacy is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be.
The conversation occurring today will determine the amount of trust we can place both in the technology that surrounds us and the government that regulates it. Together, we can find a better balance. End mass surveillance. And remind the government that if it really wants to know how we feel, asking is always cheaper than spying.
For everyone out there listening, thank you, and Merry Christmas.

11 must-have apps for your new Android phone

Naturally, your Android phone came bundled with many of Google’s own applications, like Google Maps and Google Keep, but to really trick out your new smartphone, you should head to the Google Play store for some killer apps. These 11 are must-haves for any Android phone

 Dropbox

Cloud services are all the rage, but Dropbox is especially helpful in the way it pairs with your mobile device. A Dropbox account lets you sync files and folders between your mobile device and PC or Mac, seamlessly. You get 2GB free, and can buy extra space or earn it through referring friends. The best part of the app, however, is its automatic camera upload abilities, which backs up all of your photos and videos to the cloud so you’ll always have a copy stowed away somewhere safe.

AirDroid

You don’t have to use a cable to transfer media from your computer to your phone, or even dig your phone out of your bag to send text messages. Instead, you can use AirDroid to control your smartphone from your computer’s Web browser.

 Astro File Manager

Navigating the files on your Android devices can be a bit of a pain. Although AirDroid can help facilitate getting those files on and off of the device, sometimes finding files and media on your phone can be a chore.

 Google Voice

Google Voice assigns you a phone number, in addition to the one already associated with your phone through your carrier, so that you can send free texts, make cheap phone calls to your friends and family overseas, or even use it as the default voicemail system to take full advantage of its transcription abilities.

Google Keyboard

Google Keyboard is the default keyboard application that Google supplies in stock version of Android. It’s mostly bare-bones, though it features gesture typing, voice typing, and dictionaries for 26 languages. There’s even emoji support, though only in Android 4.4 KitKat.
Price: Free

 VSCO Cam

The free application features the usual arsenal of photo-editing tools, but you’ll mostly get a kick out of its faux-realist vintage filters. You can choose the strength of each individual filter and then tweak it further even after you’ve applied it. Want to make the photo look even more weathered? Add a fade or drop the color saturation just a little bit. Once you’re finished, you can share the photo across different social networks, like Google+, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and even VSCO’s own VSCO Grid photo-sharing network.

Price: Free

 Podkicker

There is no need for a bloated, busy podcast app, which is why Podkicker is so highly recommended. You can download podcasts for offline listening and then delete them after you’re finished, or engage car mode so that you’re not distracted trying to navigate the menus to get to the episode you want to play. The paid version gets you even more features and removes all advertisements.

Price: Free or $3

 TuneIn Radio

Whether you like to listen to a broadcast of your favorite team up to bat, or you just miss some of the radio stations from back home, TuneIn offers free access to more than 10,000 radio stations from around the world. If you’re a fan of live radio shows, you can send yourself a reminder to “tune in” when it’s on. Or if you miss the days of clock radios, you can even set your phone to wake you up to the radio. The paid version lets you record live radio shows and play them back later.

Price: Free, or $7

 Yelp

Looking for a place to get a bite to eat? Or perhaps you’re in the mood for some roller disco? Whatever you’re hungering for, Yelp is the de facto service for checking out crowd-sourced reviews. Can’t decide what you want to do at all? Just hit the Nearby button to see what’s in the area. The best part of Yelp on your mobile phone is that it provides an easy-access button to get directions to where you’re going.

Price: Free

  ESPN SportsCenter

Hey, sports buff. You don’t have to lose track of your team just because they’re not in season. ESPN SportsCenter can keep you connected with personalized news for your favorite teams, live scores, video highlights, and personalized alerts. And if you couldn’t make it to the game, you can even follow along with the buzz on Twitter.

Price: Free
