Typhoon Haiyan Aftermath: 1,200 Feared Dead

One of the most powerful typhoons in history is believed to have killed 1,200 people in the Philippines, the Red Cross Saturday, as rescue workers raced to reach towns devastated by tsunami-like waves.

A day after Super Typhoon Haiyan whipped across the central Philippines with maximum sustained winds of around 315 kilometers (195 miles) an hour, a picture emerged of entire communities having been flattened. Authorities said that, aside from the ferocious winds, storm surges of up to three meters (10 feet) high that swept into coastal towns and deep inland were responsible for destroying countless homes.

"Imagine a strip one kilometer deep inland from the shore, and all the shanties, everything, destroyed," Interior Secretary Mar Roxas said after visiting coastal towns in Leyte, one of the worst-hit provinces in the east of the archipelago. "They were just like matchsticks flung inland. All the houses were destroyed."

The official government death toll on Saturday night was 138. But with rescue workers yet to reach or communicate with many ravaged communities across a 600-kilometer stretch of islands, authorities said they were unable to give a proper assessment of how many people had been killed. Philippine Red Cross secretary general Gwendolyn Pang said her organization estimated 1,200 people had died, while a UN official who visited Leyte described apocalyptic scenes.

"This is destruction on a massive scale. There are cars thrown like tumbleweed and the streets are strewn with debris," said Sebastian Rhodes Stampa, the head of a UN disaster assessment coordination team. "The last time I saw something of this scale was in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami," he said, referring to the 2004 disaster that claimed about 220,000 lives.

Europe's 1-Ton Satellite Will Fall To Earth On Sunday Night; Scientists Clueless Where It Would Crash

GOCE orbit is so low that it experiences drag from the outer edges of Earth's atmosphere.

The satellite's streamline structure and use of electric propulsion system counteract atmospheric drag to ensure that the data are of true gravity. ESA /AOES MedialabA one-ton European gravity-mapping satellite is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and fall to the planet's surface in pieces on Sunday night, European Space Agency, or ESA, said on Friday, adding that they could not precisely say where the fragments would fall.

The European agency’s Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer, or GOCE, satellite was launched on March 17, 2009, but it ran out of fuel in October. The GOCE has been dropping toward Earth ever since, and the ESA predicts that the satellite will reach Earth’s surface late Sunday or early Monday.
“When and where these parts might land cannot yet be predicted, but the affected area will be narrowed down closer to the time of re-entry,” the ESA said in a statement.
NASAOn Friday morning, the satellite was about 105 miles above Earth’s surface -- some 56 miles lower than its normal orbit. According to an ESA update, the satellite will disintegrate once it hits a 50-mile distance from Earth, adding that the “spacecraft continues to perform excellently” at these extreme conditions.
According to Heiner Klinkrad, head of ESA's Space Debris Office, the satellite might break into a large number of fragments, most of which will burn up before it reaches Earth’s surface.
“A small fraction of the initial spacecraft mass – about 20% or 200kg – is expected to reach ground, distributed across dozens of fragments, spread over a sizable re-entry ground swath,” Klinkrad said in a blog post.
He affirmed that the odds of people being hit by a GOCE fragment were remote, adding that no man-made space objects that have re-entered Earth’s atmosphere have caused injury to humans.
“Statistically speaking, it is 250,000 times more probable to win the jackpot in the German Lotto than to get hit by a GOCE fragment,” Klinkrad said.
The 17.4 feet long satellite has been orbiting Earth at the lowest altitude of any research satellite exposing it to drags from the outer edges of Earth’s atmosphere, according to ESA.
The space agency said that the situation is being continuously watched by its Space Debris Office, which will periodically issue re-entry predictions.

Oshiomhole Offers UNIBEN Student Lifeline

Gov Adams Oshiomhole

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has offered to bear the cost of undergraduate studies of Miss Queen Onwunaje, a physically challenged student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

Oshiomhole made the promise when Miss Onwunaje paid him a thank-you visit at the Government House in Benin-City recently with some relations.

Queen, who was accompanied on the visit to the governor by her mother and sister, Mrs. Helen Onwunaje and Miss Chizoba, as well as Mrs Dorothy Igbinovia who was Queen's principal at Idia College, Benin-City, where she had her post-primary education between 2004 and 2010.

However, Oshiomhole commended the courage of the girl in seeking to obtain the highest levels of education possible, instead of surrendering to the dictates of her physical challenges.

He noted that he was particularly moved by the determination of the young lady not just to acquire a university degree but also to be a lawyer in future so that, as she said, "I would then be in a good position help other needy people including the physically challenged or impaired persons."

The governor, who could not conceal his elation during the brief ceremony, said that he was happy that the medical treatment in UK has enhanced the ability of the girl to pursue her education despite being physically challenged from birth.
"I'm happy that the medical trip to the UK last year has been of good use to you", Oshiomhole said.
He added, "I'm particularly excited that you are a true comrade and a determined fighter who has refused to be held down by any unfavourable natural circumstance. I want to assure you that I will do all within my powers to assist you through the university, even after I would have left here as Governor."

Governor Oshiomhole had in 2011 given Queen a lifeline by granting her the sum of N3.5 million towards her overseas medical treatment, which culminated in the successful artificial limbs implant in the United Kingdom in 2012.
She returned to Nigeria in December, 2013 and subsequently gained admission to study a course in the faculty of education of UNIBEN though she had actually applied to study law

Nonetheless, she told the governor that she was still intent on studying law, saying she was already working hard at securing admission to satisfy her ambition whether in UNIBEN or in another university.

Also speaking, Queen's former teacher and principal, who THISDAY learnt personally gave the challenged student a wheelchair some years ago, joined the Onwunaje family in expressing profuse appreciation to Oshiomhole for his saintly gesture towards the girl by promising to help her through her educational pursuit.

Igbinovia, who described the governor as "God sent", told THISDAY that her joy knew no bounds when Oshiomhole decided to intervene and hopes brightened for help to finally come to the hardworking girl.

The Chief of Staff, Edo State Government House, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon, also witnessed the event.

THISDAY first brought the public domain the story of Queen Onwunaje, who was born without a hand and a leg, with a featured report published in 2010 when Queen was still a student at Idia College, Benin-City.
The highpoint of the courtesy visit to Governor Oshiomhole was the presentation a special commendation card to him by Miss Onwunaje, who also personally read the words of the appreciation souvenir.

Prof. Dibu Ojerinde

The 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) usually conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for students applying for first degree studies in Nigerian universities will include a test on the reading culture of applicants.

A statement from JAMB Friday in Abuja to announce the early roll out the 2014 UTME application documents indicated that apart from the usual appropriate choice of subjects, candidates will equally be tested on two general subjects to ascertain their levels of appreciation for reading.

"The public is also urged to note that candidates will be tested on two general books to enhance their reading culture irrespective of their choice of course of study.

The books are; The Successor by Jerry Agada and the Potter's Wheel by Chukwuemeka Ike," the statement from the head public relations of JAMB, Fabian Benjamin stated.

He noted that the board was determined to provide access to candidates desirous of tertiary education and has begun the sale of application documents into the nation's tertiary institutions.

Benjamin explained that the early sale of the application form is to enable every Nigerian child desirous of tertiary education have access to the form on time to enable them prepare ahead for the examination slated for April 2014.

According to him, the two modes of tests hitherto conducted by JAMB; the Paper and Pencil Test (PPT) and Computer Based Test (CBT) are still opened to intending and prospective candidates for the 2014 UTME.

"Candidates across the globe who have successfully completed their secondary school education with a minimum of six credits including English Language and Mathematics are expected to obtain the forms at the designated banks and register with the approved cyber cafés across Nigeria and at the Nigeria High Commission Offices in Ghana, United Kingdom (UK), South Africa (SA), Cameroon, Jeddah and Biu.

Nigeria: FG Sets 2018 Target for Affordable Broadband

THE Federal government on Monday said every Nigerian will have access to the internet in 2018.
The Vice President Namadi Sambo disclosed announced this while declaring open this year's Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation, CTO Forum with the theme: innovation Through Broadband.

The Vice President, who expressed satisfaction with what he called the positive impact of internet on the country's economy, said that the dream will be made possible after completion of the five year Broadband Plan.

Sambo, who was represented by the Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, said the government is presently collaborating with the private sector to get Nigeria covered with broadband.

According to him, the broadband will increase access to and enhance usage of ICT among the youth.

In his remarks, the Secretary General of CTO Prof Tim Unwin, said the forum is tackling problem of broadband connectivity facing some Commonwealth countries like Nigeria.

Prof Unwin said solving broadband issue is importance if full advantage of the Internet is to be gained, especially by the poorest and most marginalized people and communities.

"To do this, we need the combined expertise of companies, governments, regulators and civil society that the CTO is able to convene to deliver effective multi-stakeholder partnerships" he added

Meanwhile, Cisco's Vice President of Global Technology Policy, Dr Robert Pepper says the broadband working group, otherwise known as Alliance for Affordable Internet, A4AI is perfecting plans to drive down the cost of broadband to five per cent.

Dr Robert Pepper disclosed this shortly after moderating the ministerial panel at the launch of the Alliance for Affordable Internet, A4AI .

He explained that the move was part of the group's advocacy for open, competitive and innovative broadband market.

The coalition is expected to lead policy and regulatory reform and spur action to drive down artificially high internet prices in developing countries.

By reaching this goal, pepper said it will be easier to connect the two-thirds of the world that is presently not connected to the internet, and make universal access a reality.

Pepper who moderated on the topic: What mechanisms are being employed to respond to technological change - how does this impact on regulation and policy?, said that Cisco is focused on helping businesses and governments drive sustainable growth in Africa by providing network-based technologies that help organizations innovate, drive new business models, increase productivity and create new jobs.

"By advocating for open, competitive and innovative broadband markets, A4AI aims to help access prices fall to below five per cent of monthly income worldwide, a target set by the UN Broadband Commission," he said.

Through its long-term commitment and investment in Africa, he stated that Cisco is helping governments, businesses and citizens build an economically sustainable future through the intelligent application of ICT.

He advised government and Nigerian business leaders to encourage social and economic transformation by focus on delivering universal broadband access.

"One of the most important steps government and business leaders in Africa can take to encourage social and economic transformation is to focus on delivering universal broadband access. I'm looking forward to a robust discussion on how we can accelerate affordable broadband take-up across the continent, so that Africa can truly benefit from the Internet of Everything", Pepper added.

Dr. Robert Pepper, a member of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Spectrum Management Advisory Committee and the U.S. Department of State's Advisory Committee on International Communications and Information Policy, leads Cisco's Global Technology Policy team in areas such as broadband, IP-enabled services, wireless, security, privacy and ICT development.

Va-Va-Voom! Selena Gomez Shows Off Her Sauciest Look Ever

Selena Gomez stepped out to celebrate her Flaunt magazine cover on Thursday night at Hakkasan Beverly Hills looking absolutely gorgeous in a cut out, black Cushnie Et Ochs dress, a sauced-up sexy look similar to the photo spread in the magazine where the “Slow Down” singer, 21, poses in a bob wig, lingerie, and some fabulous couture.

“Well, I actually really was tempted to wear the bob!” Selena told omg! about her ensemble for the evening. “I loved it, it was so much fun, so I wanted to do something darker and simple [tonight]. I’ve been running around, so something simple was key.”
In the latest issue of the magazine, Selena looks more grown up than ever, in a shoot that British photographer — and host of “The Conversation” — Amanda de Cadenet told omg! was purposefully “sensual, not sexual.”
“Whenever there’s an opportunity to photograph a role model in a way that isn’t sexualized — at this time in her life, I think it was a really important shoot for her to do that kind of shows how she is,” Amanda told omg!. “She has a lot of integrity.”
So did Selena ever have reservations about it?
“[Amanda] and I actually have very freaky stories,” she told us. “We have similar kind of backgrounds with her daughter who is 21. She had her daughter when she was 16 and my mom had me when I was 16, so there was a level of sophistication that she knew I was trying to come across, because her own daughter in her life is doing that, so it helped.”
Gomez has been a Disney darling and in the spotlight for years, but the actress/singer told us she is embracing the fun of growing up in front of the world.
“These shoots are fun. At the end of the day, I’m 21, so of course I’m very proud to be a woman and I’m proud of my body,” she said with a smile. “It’s just about doing it the right way.”
Another thing Selena is proud of? Girl power. In the latest issue of Flaunt, Gomez addresses Lorde’s recent criticism of her song “Come & Get It.”
“That’s not feminism,” she told the magazine. “[Lorde is] not supporting other women. That’s my honest opinion, that’s what I would say to her if I saw her. I actually covered her song in all of my shows that I’ve done so far. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue that.”
Selena’s remarks about feminism are similar to what Jennifer Lawrence said on Wednesday during her Tumblr Ask with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, where she criticized certain parts of our culture for tearing women down.
“Of course [I agree with Jennifer],” Selena told us about Lawrence’s remarks. “Honestly, that’s all the questions that are being asked to girls nowadays. People are trying to find a way to get you to say something negative, and unfortunately that’s just what — it isn’t our fault!”
Selena Gomez covers Flaunt magazine (Amanda de Cadenet/Flaunt Magazine)
In the spirit of all things positive, Selena went on to give the Oscar-winning actress a thumbs up on her new ‘do.
“She is rocking the hair! Rocking the hair, ah it’s so good,” Selena gushed about the “Catching Fire” star’s pixie cut.

Ekiti students’ performance in public exams has improved by 60% —Commissioner

Performance of Ekiti State students in public examinations has improved by 60 per cent, Mr. Tayo Ekundayo, the state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, has said.

He said the students’ performance has moved up from 10 per cent to 70 per cent within the three years that the present administration assumed office.

He said this when he paid a courtesy visit to the headquarters of Vintage Press Limited, publishers of The Nation newspapers, yesterday.

He lamented the deplorable state of education in the past, saying: ” The state that was acknowledged as the fountain of knowledge was becoming a fountain of ignorance before the present administration took over the government. Let me give you a graphic situation of things then. In West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) that is used as a standard measure for students, the pass rate of Ekiti students was 10per cent. The schools were not good for human learning and teaching.

“We have done well in the area of education by making sure that the students learn under a conducive atmosphere. We pioneered a computer per student. We gave laptops powered by solar energy because of power situation in the country. We also gave laptops to teachers because they were the ones that would teach them.

“We have already started getting results in the sector. Within a space of three years, the pass rate in the last WASSCE results that were released moved up from 10 per cent to 70 per cent. The best student in the Senior Secondary School Competition held in Makurdi came from Ekiti State. The student was from a rural school in Efon Alaaye and not an elite school.”

He added that the Fayemi government has also improved the infrastructure which was abandoned by previous administrations.

He said: “If you look at the area of infrastructure which was totally lacking before we came to office, you will agree that this administration has performed creditably well. As at 2010, the roads in Ado Ekiti were horrible, and people kept asking if there was a government in the state. Within three years, we have been able to transform Ado Ekiti, and people have been wondering how we did it. I do not know of any major road in Ado Ekiti that is not a beauty to behold today.

“We have also rehabilitated Federal Government roads in the state. We can’t wait for the Federal Government forever to have the roads repaired. They have about N8billion to reimburse us for the expenses we incurred rehabilitating the roads. As I speak, the Federal Government is not doing anything in the state. They have neglected the state in everything.”

He hinted that the state has embarked on mechanized farming that would encourage the youths to take to agriculture.

“We have identified the northern senatorial district of the state as a veritable zone for agriculture that can feed the substantial part of the population of the South West. We are driving the agenda and we can see it becoming a model in the country. We are going to irrigate all the land in the area such that all year round, you will be able to cultivate crops. We have partnership arrangement now with the Israelis. Of course, you know their reputation in the areas of agriculture and irrigation. Good enough, this area has two main dams that have been lying fallow for a very long time. We are going to use that water now for massive irrigation to make sure that the area is noted for agriculture in the country,” he said.

On the face-off between the Honourable Opeyemi Bamidele and the state governor, he said: “The crisis is not what cannot be resolved. We believe that he is still a member of our party. He has not left. He has his ambition, but he needs to be very careful pursuing it. If you pursue any ambition with a kind of blindness, you will probably not be able to see the future.

“We believe with the way he is pursuing it, he may not at the end of the day be able to run in the APC as it were because everybody has already endorsed the governor. We believe that he would probably at the end of the day have a rethink and retrace his step. It is going to be a daunting task for him to want to pursue this ambition to a logical conclusion.

“He dismissed threats by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that they would take over the government house in 2014.

“It is very funny to hear such threat from the PDP. What do you expect from them? They have not been able to say what they would do for the state that the Fayemi government has not done. You can see and feel what we have done.

“Good things are happening in Ekiti. What is happening in the state is like seeing tomorrow happen in your life time. We have done quite a lot in transforming our state. Why we want to do a second term is because of the neglect of the past. We have quite a lot to still do.

“I use Lagos State as a good example. If today, Lagos State is what it is, it is because of continuity. When you have somebody that is delivering, you support him. You don’t change a winning team. This is the message we have been passing to all our compatriots in the state. If this kind of continuity can transform Lagos State, let us see how it works in Ekiti State. We really need the support of everybody.”
