JTF Imposes 24 Hour Curfew In Potiskum

Barely two days to the Muslim ed-el –ftr Sallah celebration, the Military Joint Task Force (JTF) in Yobe state has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the troubled commercial town of the state.

A statement made available to journalists by the JTF spokesman, Captain Eli Lazarus said the curfew commences from 5^th of August 2013 and enjoined residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by remaining indoors until the curfew is lifted.

“The Joint Task Force announces the imposition of 24 hour curfew in Potiskum commencing from today (6th) August 2013

“Residents of Potiskum town are enjoined to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies until the curfew is lifted”

It will be recalled that Yobe state has long being under a dusk to dawn curfew as a strategy to curb the activities of the insurgents and the time got reviewed between the hours of 10:00PM to 6:00 AM daily just a week ago.

Potiskum has over the years remained one of the flash points of the radical Islamists, Boko Haram, since the commencement of the insurgency.

Early this year, the entire state had remained under 24 hour curfew for three days as a measure to trap the sect in their hideouts with the aim of recovering arms and ammunition, a style that has always caused clash between the sect members and security forces.

Military troops were sighted in their hundreds along Maiduguri-Damaturu-Potiskum road hours before the announcement of the curfew was made.

Fed. College Of Agriculture Students Protest Rape Of Female Students

The students of the Federal College of Agriculture in Akure,the Ondo state capital, staged a peaceful demonstration to protest the poor security in the college which they say gave rise to the raping of two female students of the college.

The two ladies, both in their first year of the National Diploma cadre were beaten and raped at about 1 a.m. this morning.

According to our source, the Students apprehended one out of the five suspected rapists, Ife Oluwa Modupe who we were told is a student of the college also, but Ife Oluwa later escaped from the college security post where he was detained.

The President of the Students Union of the College, Oladipo Akindamini and other students lamented over the poor state of security in the College.

Reacting, the Provost of the College, Dr Mary Ogunkoya told Newsmen that the situation has been calmed, and the injured students receiving treatment at the hospital.

She said the fleeing rapist will be rearrested as Police investigations are on. She however promised that the security challenges plaguing the College will be addressed.

Oshiomhole Invites 1,300 Teachers For Certificate Screening

Edo State Government has invited 1,300 Primary School teachers who have irregularities in their education certificates and age records to appear before a verification committee to defend their certificates.

The state Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole made this known in a meeting held with the leadership of the state Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led by Comrade Emmanue Ademokun and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) led by Comrade Patrick Ikosimi.

The Edo State branch of the Nigerian Union of Teachers had in a letter declined to attend the screening of the indicted teachers because they had not been paid amongst other reasons.

The Governor who said that the exercise is not to witch-hunt anybody however insisted that it would not be business as usual and that those who have become too old to teach will have to give way.

Eventually the unions consented to the screening and the state Government approved that it will be decentralized to make it easy for the teachers to attend the screening exercise.

The meeting with the teachers and civil society was a follow up of the town hall meeting held last week following findings of alleged falsification of age by 1,300 teachers in the state.

The governor also approved the payment of salaries to primary school teachers withheld as a result of the recent strike in the state on the condition that they make up for the time lost in the strike.

The Edo State NLC Chairman Emmanuel Ademokun who noted that some of those indicted by the findings of the computer were young teachers who may not want to retire early appealed to Governor to retain them after the exercise.

The Governor promised that another meeting will be called to discuss the findings of the screening exercise.

It will be recalled that the Governor had at a Town Hall meeting on Education in the state on July 31 said an audit carried out by the State’s Information and Communications Technology unit showed that 789 teachers out of 1,379 obtained their Primary School Leaving Certificates before the age of 8 or 9.

He said at the meeting that “some of the records show there were a few who were particularly gifted and they finished Primary School before they were born.

“We found that of all our Primary School Teachers, only 1,287 representing 9% out of 14,484 teachers have proper and accurate records in our system.  91% have various forms of discrepancies in their records.

He said further “about 1,379 teachers representing 11.5% claim that they obtained their Primary School Certificates after they had been employed as teachers.  In fact, some obtained their Primary School Certificates not more than two years ago, from the school in which they were employed as teachers.”

RCCG ordains 8,024 deacons, deaconesses to mark 61st convention

THE 61st Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), started on Monday, with the ordination of 8,024 deacons and deaconesses.
The convention is being held at the Church  headquarters at the Redemption camp, KM 46, Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, with the theme: “Jesus.”

In his address, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Church, acknowledged the goodness of God on the mission.

He urged participants to spend quality time praying, so as to have an encounter with Jesus, whom he described as being “central to Christianity.

“This is one convention you will not forget in a hurry.

“Be focused, prayerful, determined not to leave the same way you have came.

“Avoid any sinful act and do not miss any of the sessions,” Adeboye said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there was heavy presence of men of the Federal Road Safety Corps and other workers of the church around the venue to control traffic.

NAN also reports that additional car parks were created at the venue to ease traffic congestion on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Meanwhile, the cost of transportation from various garages in Abeokuta rose by about a 100 per cent as a result of the RCCG programme.

The fare for a taxi ride from the popular Kuto motor park, Abeokuta— a distance of about 50km to to Redemption Camp— rose from  N400 to N800 on Monday.

The week-long programme continues on Tuesday, with the ordination of assistant pastors, as well as seminars and plenary sessions.

Latest Ranking: OAU rated best Nigerian University

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been ranked as the best university in Nigeria and the eighth in Africa.

A statement by the university’s Public Relations Department, on Monday, said the latest “web-o-metric ranking was conducted by a world renowned research council, Cybermetrics Lab, which is based in Spain.”

Signed by the Head, PR Department, OAU, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, the statement said the university was ranked 14th best in Africa in the last rating done by the research council, adding that university has, however, moved six steps up the ladder.

Explaining that the latest ranking was done on Monday, August 5, 2013, Olanrewaju stressed that it underscored the premium placed on research, development, learning and teaching by the Prof Bamitale Omole-led administration.

According to Olanrewaju, the vice chancellor has commended staff and students of the institution for the cooperation enjoyed by his administration, saying peaceful environment aids learning.
