Yabatech Students shut school gates over cult activities (PHOTOS)

Activities at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, were paralysed on Thursday as students of the institution shut the school gates and restricted movements around the institution owing to a student protest said to be against cult activities.

The students equally turned back some policemen, who were drafted to the school to quell the unrest while the protesters did not allow those within the campus to leave for several hours.

When our correspondent visited the school on Thursday, two fully-loaded staff busses were also prevented from entering the institution while many of the students were stranded outside the campus as the protest caught most of them unawares.

PUNCH Metro learnt that there was a clash the previous night between some students and some suspected cult members.

I MAY NOT RETIRE AFTER ALL- USAIN BOLT

Sprinting superstar Usain Bolt said Thursday he is “definitely reconsi-dering” the plans he stated earlier in September of retiring after the 2016 Olympics.

According to Thursday’s Associated Press report, the 27-year-old Bolt, a six-time

Olympic gold medalist and the world record holder at 100 and 200 meters, said he might change his mind after listening more to his fans and sponsors. He said his coach believes he can continue competing at a high level, adding that it’s now ”on the cards” to compete for another year after the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

“I am definitely reconsidering. I think my fans especially have really voiced their concern about me retiring. They think I should carry on and so do my sponsors. I have discussed it with my coach and he says it is possible. We will see what happens. But it’s on the cards that I will extend it by one more year.”

With the new potential timeline, Bolt would possibly retire after the 2017 world championships in London. He’s also thinking about running in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo are not something he’s considering at this point, in part because, he said, if he wins gold in Rio, he will have done everything he envisioned for his career:

“It’s a long way away, but if I win the next Olympics I will have done everything I wanted to do in my career. So there would be no reason to continue.”

FOR GUYS: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT EJACULATION

“If a man has abstained from sex for a very long time, he has a very high tendency to ejaculate early when he tries to have sexual intercourse.

These were the words of Dr Celsus Undie,A Urologist. A urologist is a physician who has a specialised knowledge and skill regarding problems of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs.
He described premature ejaculation as the inability of a man to withhold ejaculation until he was ready to do so. he also added that:

“There is really nothing wrong with this. I try my best to discourage men from labelling themselves as having premature ejaculation or erectile dysfunction when they see me.

“ I do not know why women who have orgasm too early are not labelled and why women who take so much time to reach orgasm are also not labelled?” he queried.

According to him, men believed that they were better off when they could have prolonged erection every time they had sexual intercourse.

“This makes them to go from one hospital, one laboratory, to another, doing tests. They do not accept what a professional urologist tells them.

“They want to have erection that lasts 30 minutes or one hour, this is very abnormal.”

The doctor said some of the men ended up taking medications that would eventually cause them priapism.

Priapism is a potentially painful medical condition, in which the erect penis does not return to its flaccid state, despite the absence of both physical and psychological stimulation, within four hours.

“Priapism is a purposeless, persistent, painful erection unrelated to sexual desire, which tends to ultimately cause complete loss of erection in the future if it is not quickly treated surgically.

“What is important when it comes to sexual performance is technique, not the length of the penis or how long the erection lasted, ’’ the urologist said.

He said one good orgasm would be enough for a day for most women, adding that failure to help a partner to reach orgasm could not be compensated by prolonged erection.

BREAKING NEWS: SSS FOIL KIDNAP OF LATE PRESIDENT YARADUA’S DAUGHTER

The State Security Service (SSS), said it thwarted a plan to kidnap one of the daughters of late President Umaru Musa Yaradua.

The SSS spokesperson said, “The Service acting on actionable intelligence nullified the plot before it was actualized, and both Hamza Abubakar and other collaborators shall be charged to court soon.”

She refused to give the name of the target for the kidnap, saying that it would compromise the person’s security.

Marilyn said the suspects were arrested on the 21st of August as they perfected plans to kidnap the daughter of the late President at a construction site in Kado estate, Abuja.

She further said, “Hamza cultivated friendship with one Abu Katsina, a guard at the lady’s construction site. This afforded him leverage to visit the area regularly.

Having obtained sufficient information on the lady, he contacted Denis, who was in Owerri at the time. Both Denis and Hamza co-opted; Daddy Mohammed, Isa Keteri, Masaudu Kateri and IK (full name not known).”

The SSS also paraded 65 year old Elias Adams arrested for passing himself off as retired Nigerian Army General Abubakar Sani. He is also accused to have posed as a Special Adviser adviser to the President on defence.

Elias Adams is also accused to have claimed to be a coordinating member of the National Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilation.

The SSS said investigations revealed that, Elias told officials of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) that he was directed by the Presidential Villa to facilitate the speedy supply of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), through certain marketers located around flooded parts of the country.

NIGERIA GOVT passes Law that Enables Phone/Internet Communications to be Tapped

Phone and internet communications made by Nigerians daily will be open to government monitoring and when necessary, interception, according to a new law given a second reading by the Senate on Wednesday.

The law will allow government law enforcement agents filter and tap into communications and will also outlaw unauthorised interception of internet and phone communications.

The proposal, titled ‘A Bill for An Act to Provide for the Interception, Development And Protection of Communications Networks and Facilities For Public Interest And Other Related Matters, 2013’, passed a second reading on Wednesday.

After the passage on Wednesday, the bill will be considered by committees on Communications, Judiciary and National Security which will hold public hearings on the merits and demerits of the bill. It will then be given a third reading before similar approval by the House of Representatives and the president’s assent to make it a law.

The Senate said the move was aimed at tackling terrorism.

“The bill intends to provide for certain instances where lawful interception of communications data by law enforcement agencies shall be allowed while at the same time ensuring that privacy and communications of citizens is maintained,” sponsor of the bill, Isa Galaudu, from Kebbi north, said on Wednesday.

Biologists develop new method for discovering antibiotics

Biologists at the University of California, San Diego have developed a revolutionary new method for identifying and characterizing antibiotics, an advance that could lead to the discovery of new antibiotics to treat antibiotic resistant bacteria.

The researchers, who published their findings in this week’s early online edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, made their discovery by developing a way to perform the equivalent of an autopsy on bacterial cells.

“This will provide a powerful new tool for identifying compounds that kill bacteria and determining how they work,” said Joseph Pogliano, a professor of biology at UC San Diego who headed the research team. “Some bacteria have evolved resistance to every known class of antibiotic and, when these multi-drug resistant bacteria cause an infection, they are nearly impossible to treat. There is an urgent need for new antibiotics capable of treating infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an alarming report in March that antibiotic-resistant strains of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE, had been found to cause infections in patients in nearly 200 hospitals in the United States alone. Because no antibiotics on the market are effective at treating these infections, about one-half of patients die from CRE infections. These outbreaks are difficult to contain, and in a 2011 outbreak of Klebsiella pneumonia at the US National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, the bacteria spread despite strict infection control procedures and was detected in drains and medical devices that had been subject to standard decontamination protocols.

iOS 7 Bug Lets Anyone Bypass iPhone's Lockscreen To Hijack Photos, Email, Or Twitter

Forget the debate around the security or insecurity of the iPhone 5s’s fingerprint reader. The latest version of the iPhone’s operating system currently offers a huge, gaping hole in its old-fashioned passcode lockscreen.

Jose Rodriguez, a 36-year-old soldier living in Spain’s Canary Islands, has found a security vulnerability in iOS 7 that allows anyone to bypass its lockscreen in seconds to access photos, email, Twitter, and more. He shared the technique with me, along with the video above.

As the video shows, anyone can exploit the bug by swiping up on the lockscreen to access the phone’s “control center,” and then opening the alarm clock. Holding the phone’s sleep button brings up the option to power it off with a swipe. Instead, the intruder can tap “cancel” and double click the home button to enter the phone’s multitasking screen. That offers access to its camera and stored photos, along with the ability to share those photos from the user’s accounts, essentially allowing anyone who grabs the phone to hijack the user’s email, Twitter, Facebook FB +0.92% or Flickr account.

I tested the technique on an iPhone 5 running iOS 7, and it worked. Rodriguez’s video shows it also working on an iPad. It’s not yet clear if the same exploit can bypass the lockscreen of an iPhone 5s or 5c, but Rodriguez tells me he believes it will. I’ve reached out to Apple for comment and I’ll update this post if I hear from the company.

Rodriguez has a track record of finding lockscreen bypass bugs in iOS, many of which he says he dug up while killing time in his old job as a driver for government officials. “I had a lot of time to look at the scenery, break the phone or write poetry while waiting for my boss, and I don’t write poetry and already knew the landscape by heart,” he tells me via instant message and Google translate. So he spent hours “trying everything that goes through my head…I submit my iPhone to cruel methods of torture.”

Rodriguez found a trick to bypass the lockscreen of iOS 6.1.3 in March, and then another one in iOS 7 beta. Though that beta bug was fixed in later versions of iOS 7, Rodriguez was able to find a new one within an hour of downloading the latest iPhone operating system by adapting tricks that worked on iOS 5 and 6. (He also tells me that this will be his last “hunting trip” for iPhone lockscreen bugs, as he has a new office job that demands more of his time.)

The latest version of iOS patches 80 security vulnerabilities, according to a post on Apple’s security mailing list. Clearly the company’s security team also missed a big one.

Court strikes out NASU’s case against Labour Minister

The National Industrial Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday struck out a suit filed against the Minister of Labour and Productivity by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).

NASU prayed the court to make an order of interim injunction, restraining the minister from giving approval for the registration of a parallel union.

The presiding judge, Justice Maureen Esowe in her ruling held that the matter before the court was based on speculation and that the proper parties were not joined.

Esowe explained that the court could not rely on facts that were based on hearsay to decide a case since the said application for registration had yet to be made.

She, however, sustained the preliminary objection filed by the counsel for the defendant, Mr Nnanna Ibom, and struck out the case.

“The court cannot give an order restraining the defendant from accepting a yet-to-be-filed application for registration.

“The case is premature as the court cannot rely on hearsay to decide its case.

“The preliminary objection is sustained and this case is hereby struck out,” she ruled.

NASU sued the Minister of Labour and Productivity, the Registrar of Trade Unions and the Attorney- General of the Federation via an ex-parte motion on June 12.

The union alleged that the first defendant was likely to give approval for the registration of a new trade union – “Non-Teaching Staff Union of Polytechnics”.

NASU also alleged that the parallel union was formed by its members, led by Mr Shaba Nakorji, who was removed from office as a branch chairman of the union.

The claimant explained that the said Nakorji and others were suspended in 2011 for alleged embezzlement of union dues paid by members in Federal Polytechnic, Bida branch, between 2007 and 2011.

Reports Say Tesla Is Developing A Self-Driving Car

With all the buzz over autonomous automobiles these days – among other automakers currently in the race, Nissan recently pledged it would bring a self-driving car of its own to market by decade’s end – it comes as no surprise that high-tech darling Tesla Motors would be working on its own auto piloted model.

That’s according to an Automotive News report based on of all things, the want ads. Specifically, a Twitter tweet posted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk that revealed, “Intense effort under way at Tesla to develop a practical autopilot system for Model S. Engineers interested in working on autonomous driving, pls email autopilot@teslamotors.com. Team will report directly to me.”

What’s more, according to an interview in the Financial Times, Musk says the company hopes to have a “90 percent” self-driving model within three years, with a fully autonomous car entering production farther down the road.

This makes a world of sense, as upstart Tesla has to date – specifically with the universally well received Model S full-electric sedan – made its fortunes on the bleeding edge of technology, and there’s no hotter prospect in that regard in the auto industry than self-driving cars. Automotive News notes that Tesla plans 21,000 deliveries of the $70,000-plus Model S this year, and that number could double during 2014 with growth expected in European and Asian markets; by comparison, EVs offered by mainstream makes like Nissan and Mitsubishi are languishing on dealers’ lots and are being sold with hefty incentives.

We’d be willing to bet Tesla intenders might be more willing to be the first in their upscale subdivisions to make what should be a costly bet on one of the first autonomous driving vehicles than, say, comparatively conservative Mercedes-Benz or Cadillac loyalists, and certainly more than price-sensitive Nissan customers. If anything, its chief rival might be fellow Silicon Valley tech pioneer Google, which reportedly has logged more than 300,000 miles on its own homegrown fleet of prototype autopilot models without an accident.

A good sign (at least for Tesla) is that the Twitter feed indicates the project will be supervised by Musk himself, who is increasingly looking like the auto industry’s equivalent of the late Steve Jobs. Stay tuned.

Blackberry reveals date BBM messaging will go to rivals

From this weekend, users will no longer need to own a Blackberry device to access its BBM messaging service.

Blackberry has confirmed BBM will be available as a free download for Apple and Android devices but not for Windows phones.

The move comes as the Wall Street Journal reports that Blackberry will lay off 40% of its staff before 2014.

Widening the appeal of BBM could be a clever way for the company to reinvent itself, said experts.

"Blackberry is having a tough time, sales are down, it is losing market to Windows phones and it needs to do something to stop the rot. This is as good a move as any," said Chris Green, principal technology analyst at Davies Murphy Group Europe.

SCIENTIST: THE WORLD IS BOUND TO END 1.75 MILLION YEARS TIME

SCIENTISTS have predicted that we have somewhere between 1.75billion and 3.5billion years until global warming wipes out life on planet Earth.

(PHOTO):The sun's gradual warming will eventually make the Earth uninhabitable (GETTY)

Researchers from the University of East Anglia's Department of Natural Sciences have predicted that, due to the rising temperature of the sun, after that point the Earth will no longer be habitable.

In order to be a 'habitable zone' - able to support life - a planet must be neither too hot or too cold for oceans to develop.

The scientists believe that Earth could expect to experience between 6.3billion and 7.8billion years of these 'Goldilocks' conditions, meaning that we only have a maximum of around 3.5billion left.

Andrew Rushby, who was involved with the research, explains: "After this point, the Earth would be in the hot zone of the Sun, with temperatures so high that the seas would evaporate.

"We would see a catastrophic and terminal extinction event for all life."

The team of astrobiologists studied seven planets to discover how 'habitable zones' will change over time and have spotted some which might be suited to supporting life after Earth reaches moves into the 'hot zone'.

Planets such as Kepler 22b, located approximately 600 light years from Earth in the constellation of Cygnus, will experience such conditions.

However, planets closer to smaller stars, known as red dwarfs, spend much longer in habitable zones. Gliese 581d, which orbits a red dwarf 20 light years from Earth is currently enjoying habitable conditions.

(PHOTO): Conditions for humans will become impossible to survive in much sooner (GETTY)

We would see a catastrophic and terminal extinction event for all life

Andrew Rushby, researcher

Mr Rushby said: "It is possible that there will be a habitable Earth-like planet within ten light years, which is very close in astronomical terms.

Researchers report on hardware Trojans that are undetectable

(photo:): Layout of the Trojan DFFR X1 gate.

Worries that the security of integrated circuits used in critical systems by the military and industry can be compromised are all the more real with the release of a research paper titled "Stealthy Dopant-Level Hardware Trojans." The authors are a research team from United States, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. They showed that integrated circuits can be maliciously compromised. The changes elude detection. Even physical inspection of the chip will not pick up the changes made. The authors discussed how they succeeded in modifying a circuit and yet detection mechanisms did not find anything amiss. The authors wrote that "we propose an extremely stealthy approach for implementing hardware Trojans below the gate level."

Instead of adding additional circuitry to the target design, the researchers inserted their hardware Trojans by changing "the dopant polarity of existing transistors."

That way, the modified circuit nonetheless appeared as legitimate on all wiring layers, including all metal and polysilicon. The team said that their family of Trojans was resistant to most detection techniques such as fine-grain optical inspection and checks against "golden chips."

The researchers tested their Trojan on Intel's random number generator design used in Ivy Bridge processors, as well as a Side-channel Trojan.

In deciding on this second case, they authors said that, after showing how their dopant Trojan could be used to compromise the security of a real world system, they turned to the second case study, where they wanted to emphasize the flexibility of the dopant Trojan. "Instead of modifying the logic behavior of a design, the dopant Trojan is used to establish a hidden side-channel to leak out secret keys."

What do they mean by dopant? Threatpost said that "Dopant is a material that is added to semiconductor material that enables it to be electrically conductive."Computerworld explains doping as a process for modifying the electrical properties of silicon by introducing impurities such as gallium and phosphorous into the crystal. Changes made at the atomic level are difficult to detect.

Explaining their work further, the authors said that "In this paper we introduced a new type of sub-transistor level hardware Trojan that only requires modification of the dopant masks. No additional transistor gates are added and no other layout mask needs to be modified. Since only changes to the metal, polysilicon or active area can be reliably detected with optical inspection, our dopant Trojans are immune to optical inspection."

This type of Trojan under discussion is said to pose a great challenge. The authors commented that "They set a new lower bar on how much overhead can be expected from a hardware Trojan in practice (i.e. zero!)." The authors recommended that future work should include developing new methods to detect these "sub-transistor level hardware Trojans."
online banking customers, responsible for millions in annual losses, is being rolled out across Europe by a Cambridge University spin-out.

Nigeria: FG Budgets N4.77 Trillion for 2014

This is contained in the 2014-2016 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) document submitted to the Senate by President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday.

According to the document, the daily crude oil production by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for 2014 is pegged at 2.3883 million barrels per day (mbpd) which is lower than the 2013 figure of 2.526 mbpd.

In the same vein, the crude oil bench mark is put at $74 per barrel while the exchange rate between the United States' dollar and the Naira remain steady at N160 to $1.

Government is also retaining subsidy on petroleum products in 2014 and is budgeting the sum of N273.14 billion for Subsidy Re-Investment Programme (SURE-P) which is part of the N4.77 trillion estimates.

In the budget, N1.45 trillion is for capital expenditure, representing 30 percent, while the remaining will go for recurrent and overhead expenses.

According to the document, as at March 2013, Nigeria's external debt stood at $6.67 billion, in which the Federal Government's share is 63.5 per cent while the 36 states and the FCT accounted for the balance of 36.5 per cent.

Domestic debt for the same period stood at N6.49 trillion bringing the total to N7.53 trillion representing 17.75 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In 2014, the government intends to borrow N572 billion to finance the budget deficit.

Meanwhile, the Senate will today debate a motion seeking to institute an investigation into reports that the Federal Government said the 2013 budget was not implementable.

Coming under Order 42 of the Senate standing rules, Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi) said his curiosity arose from the fact that the crude oil price is still $107 USD as at Tuesday, meaning that there was no shortfall of revenue beyond the $79 per barrel.

"There is nothing wrong with the economy, we won't seat here in the Senate and allow some people to send dangerous signals," Ningi said. The Senate unanimously adopted the motion allowing him to bring the matter for discussion today.
