Fetus in womb learns language cues before birth, study finds

Infant language learning

Watch your mouth around your unborn child – he or she could be listening in. Babies can pick up language skills while they’re still in the womb, Finnish researchers say.
Fetuses exposed to fake words after week 29 in utero were able to distinguish them after being born, according to new research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Prenatal experiences have a remarkable influence on the brain's auditory discrimination accuracy, which may support, for example, language acquisition during infancy," the authors wrote in their study.
As revealed by the allure of the so-called Mozart Effect – the idea that exposing the fetus to classical music earns kids extra IQ points in spatial reasoning down the line – parents are constantly looking for ways to give their children an intelligence advantage.
That’s even if the research their parenting tactics are based on is too narrow to draw such broad conclusions or remains under question (the Mozart Effect was deemed "crap," for example, by one scientist.)
Nonetheless, scientists have discovered plenty of evidence that what's heard in utero can make a lasting impression. Fetuses respond differently to native and nonnative vowels, and newborns cry with their native language prosody (a combination of rhythm, stress and intonation). Researchers led by Eino Partanen at the University of Helsinki wanted to see what other language cues a fetus might pick up in the womb.

Marijuana as a 'Safe Drug' Is Scientifically Inaccurate

The nature of the teenage brain makes users of cannabis amongst this population particularly at risk of developing addictive behaviors and suffering other long-term negative effects, according to researchers at the University of Montreal and New York's Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The researchers reviewed over 120 studies that looked at different aspects of the relationship between cannabis and the adolescent brain, including the biology of the brain, chemical reaction that occurs in the brain when the drug is used, the influence of genetics and environmental factors, in addition to studies into the "gateway drug" phenomenon. "Data from epidemiological studies have repeatedly shown an association between cannabis use and subsequent addiction to heavy drugs and psychosis (i.e. schizophrenia). Interestingly, the risk to develop such disorders after cannabis exposure is not the same for all individuals and is correlated with genetic factors, the intensity of cannabis use and the age at which it occurs. When the first exposure occurs in younger versus older adolescents, the impact of cannabis seems to be worse in regard to many outcomes such as mental health, education attainment, delinquency and ability to conform to adult role," Dr Jutras-Aswad said.

Nigeria: Govt Borrows N256 Billion for Power Transmission

The Federal Government has borrowed a sum of N256 billion from foreign institutions for the expansion of power transmission facilities.
Power Minister Professor Chinedu Nebo disclosed this at the State House in Abuja yesterday during the meeting of the Presidential Action Committee on Power (PACP) chaired President Goodluck Jonathan.
Nebo did not disclose when the amount was borrowed, but said it was coming in form of loans from the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Euro Bond Issue and the Chinese Exim Bank.
He added that the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) had already designated the funds for the expansion of power transmission facilities.
The minister, who noted that the meeting centred on the expansion of the transmission network in Nigeria with a view to obtaining adequate transmission capacity from all the power generating plants being built, contented that the nation was apparently moving from a public power sector to a private-driven power sector.
He said all the preferred bidders of GENCOS and DISCOS power plant had significantly complied with the conditions set, most of whom he said had "paid up".
According to him, although the nation is celebrating the privatisation of the power sector instead of celebrating constant power supply, there is a substantial joy in many parts of Nigeria as power stability has become enormous.
Nebo said apart from fixing power by eliminating corruption as done in the telecommunication sector, the government envisaged that the reforms in the power sector would "dwarf" the telecommunication sector by re-energising the economy as well as boosting the manufacturing and industrial sub-sectors."

SUPREME COURT FIXES NEW DATE TO HEAR APPEAL AGAINST MIMIKO

The Supreme Court has fixed a new date for the hearing of multiple appeals against the judgment of the Court of Appeal which upheld the declaration of Governor Olusegun Mimiko as the winner of the Ondo State governorship election held last year.

The new date, August 27, was announced by Mr. Ahuraka Isah, the Media Aide to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloma Mukhtar.

The court had earlier fixed the hearing of the appeals for September 24, a date that would have rendered the appeals automatically incompetent because it would have been more than 60 days allowed by the constitution for the hearing of such appeals.

“Frank Edoho Is A Hot Tempered Man” – Ex-Wife Katherine Speaks

As we are all aware that Frank Edoho, the host of who want to be a millionaire show in Nigeria is on the verge of breakup with his new mistress, Sandra Onyenauchey over her lavish spending.

In a recent interview, the ex-wife of Frank Edoho, Katherine claims her marriage to Frank was a mistake over his bad temper.

Read her response to some interview questions below;

Interviewer: Looking back at everything, do you wish you never got separated?

Katherine: No, I think Frank and I should not have gotten married in the first place. We should just have been friends because he was an awesome friend. While I was dating someone else and he had to go back to his country, he (Frank) was there all through and I had known him all the while he was in the University of Calabar and we started our career together. I think we shouldn’t have pushed it to marriage and just stayed as friends.

Interviewer: Any regrets about that?No.

Katherine: I have three lovely kids to show for it and of course, every thing happens for a reason and a purpose. They can only make us better or stronger people and it has done so for me. I have grown from what went wrong.

Interviewer: What is usually the cause of the fight?

Katherine: I think it’s impatience, anger and not knowing how to deal with issue in the now, so you react before you think. It goes like, ‘huh, how dare you say this to me…is that what you will say?’ I can’t remember any one in particular, it has been long now, I have moved on and it’s not a thing that can happen to me again but I always say no matter what, a man should not raise his hands on a woman. A woman should also not goad a man too much. It takes nothing from the man who walks away because once he hits a woman, he starts to think it is justifiable. Unfortunately, we are in a society where we have friends that will give you thumbs up for doing that. A man should be calmer and not react on the now

How to restore old Firefox versions

Restoring an older version of Firefox is actually not that difficult at all. There are however a couple of best practices that I'd recommend you follow before you roll back an update of the browser.
The first thing that you may want to do is back up your Firefox profile. If you can start Firefox on your system, do the following to open it:
  • Type about:support in the browser's address bar and hit the enter key.
  • Click on Show Folder here near the top. This opens the profile folder in the system file browser.
  • Go back one directory level and copy the whole profile directory to another location on your system.
  • You can alternatively use a program like MozBackup for that as well.

Downloading the old Firefox version

download old firefox versions
It is likely that you do not have the old Firefox installer on your system anymore. That's why it is necessary to download that version again from the Internet. I highly suggest you download it from the official source, that is Mozilla, and not some third party repository.
Probably the best location to download old Firefox versions is the Mozilla ftp server. Here are the links pointing to the various release channels:
  • Firefox Stable and Beta and ESR: Stable versions are listed by number, while beta versions have bx added to the number with x indicating the version of that particular beta.
  • Firefox Nightly and Aurora: It gets complicated here, as the directory is a mess. You may want to start with the "latest Mozilla Aurora" or "Latest Mozilla Central" directories and go from there. Most directories are listed with a date in front so that you can go back easily here.
You may need to select the right operating system first, and then the language version that you want to install. Now that you have downloaded a version that you want to try, it is necessary to install that version on your system. Note that it will overwrite the existing installation if it is of the same channel.
Blocking automatic updates
firefox updates
You may want to disable the automatic updating of the browser for the time being, as you may end up with the same issue after it has been updated. To block updates in Firefox, do the following:
  1. Tap on the Alt-key and select Tools > Options from the menu bar that opens up.
  2. Switch to Advanced > Update in the new window.
  3. Switch "Automatically install updates" to "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them".
Instead of installing updates to the browser automatically, Firefox will now display a prompt to you that puts you in control of the update process. You can select to install the update, or block it for the time being (for instance to wait for the next release to try again).
