ASUU UPDATE!! NEC MEETING HOLDING IN KANO SECRETLY AS WE SPEAK.....

The National Executice Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities is currently holding a secret meeting in Kano at an undisclosed location.
A source reveals to us that it's possible that the union of university lecturers will call off its over-four-month-old strike tomorrow.
It was seen some hours ago as members of the National Executive Council of ASUU parked their cars in Bayero University, Kano’s oldsite and entered a PTF coaster bus to an undisclosed location where the NEC meeting is going on currently.
Now i asked myself, why on earth should a meeting as this be held in secret??? At least we students didnt do lectures in secret naww!!  we hope the meeting is genuine and not a procession meeting for Late prof iyayi.//
Details and more soon.........either its a false alarm or not, VEECUBED is always there to let u know!!

5 Reasons You Should Start Eating Onions

Onion is a member of the Allium family and is rich in sulfur containing compounds that are responsible for its pungent odor and for many of onion’s health promoting effects.

Cardiovascular Benefits
There is evidence that sulfur compounds found in onion work in an anti clotting capacity and help prevent the unwanted clumping together of blood platelet cells. There is also evidence showing that onion’s sulfur compounds can lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides and improve cell membrane function in red blood cells as well. The benefits of onion in the overall dietary context extend to prevention of heart attack. The outstanding flavonoid content of onions supports these research findings.

Bone and connective tissue benefits
Human studies have shown that onion can help increase your bone density and may have special benefit on women of menopausal age who are experiencing loss of bone density. Plus, there is evidence that women who have passed the age of menopause may be able to lower their risk of hip fracture through daily eating of onions. In this research on bone density in older women, very rare eating of onion like once a month or less did not provide much benefit. Daily consumption of onion boosts benefits for bone density. So do not skimp on onions when you are incorporating them into your diet plan. The high sulfur content of onions may provide direct benefits to your connective tissue as many of your connective tissue components require sulfur for their formation.

Samsung ordered to pay Apple $290 million for copying iPhone and iPad features

A Silicon Valley jury on Thursday ordered Samsung Electronics to pay Apple $290 million for copying vital iPhone and iPad features.
The verdict covers 13 older Samsung devices that a previous jury found were among 26 Samsung products that infringed Apple patents.
The previous jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion. But U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ordered the new trial and tossed out $450 million of the damages after concluding the previous jury miscalculated the amount Samsung owed.

Apple vs Samsung: A U.S. jury awarded Apple $290.45 million in a damages retrial against Samsung Electronics on Thursday, it is the latest battle in global patent litigation between the two mobile giants
Samsung appealed that verdict and is expected to appeal the latest verdict.
A third trial is scheduled for March to consider Apple’s claims that Samsung’s newest devices on the market also copied Apple’s technology.
Apple and Samsung are the world’s two biggest smartphone makers. The bitter rivals have been waging a global battle for supremacy of the $300 billion worldwide market.
Apple has argued in courts, government tribunals and regulatory agencies around the world that Samsung’s Android-based phones copy vital iPhone features. Samsung is fighting back with its own complaints that some key Apple patents are invalid and Apple has copied Samsung’s technology.
Samsung lawyer William Price argued Apple is misconstruing the breadth of its patents to include such things as the basic rectangle shape of most smartphones today.
‘Apple doesn’t own beautiful and sexy,’ Price told the San Jose jury.

Apple and Samsung are the world’s two biggest smartphone makers and the bitter rivals have been waging a global battle for supremacy of the $300 billion worldwide market
Apple attorney William Lee told the jury that Samsung used Apple’s technology to lift it from an also-ran in the smartphone market three years ago to the biggest seller of them in the world today.
‘Apple can never get back to where it should have been in 2010,’ Lee told the jury on Tuesday at the conclusion of the week-long trial.
The fight in San Jose is particularly contentious. The courtroom is a 15-minute drive from Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, and several prospective jurors were dismissed because of their ties to the company.
The South Korean-based Samsung has twice sought to stop the trial, accusing Apple on Tuesday of unfairly trying to inflame patriotic passions by urging jurors to help protect American companies from overseas competitors.
The judge denied Samsung’s request for a mistrial, but did reread to reread an instruction ordering them to put aside their dislikes and biases in deciding the case.
On Wednesday, Samsung again demanded a halt to the trial after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office told Apple it was planning to invalidate a patent protecting the ‘pinch-to-zoom’ feature at issue in the jury’s deliberation. The judge ordered more briefing while declining to stop the trial.

26 Year Old Nigerian killed in U.S.

The police are looking for 36-year-old man, Ryan Allen Klug, who they say is the prime suspect in the murder of 26-year-old Adaobi M. Obih, who was found dead on Tuesday.

Police initially said Klug was a “person of interest” in the case.

Police were alerted to Obih’s death after she missed work on Monday and Tuesday without notifying anyone. Concerned co-workers contacted her apartment complex to ask about her. Police also contacted the property manager to request a welfare check, according to the arrest affidavit.

A maintenance worker went to check on the woman and said: “It’s not good, there is blood everywhere.”

A neighbour said he noticed that the door to Obih’s garage spot was open and had been open for at least 24 hours. Klug, who police described as Obih’s roommate, parked his vehicle there.

The maintenance worker told police there were no signs of forced entry at the apartment and that only two people would’ve had keys: Obih and Klug. The maintenance worker told police he found Obih with a “large amount of blood around her head” and said it appeared clear that she was dead.

Police talked to Obih’s boyfriend, who revealed that he’d texted and called her multiple times but never heard back. The last message he received from her was at 12:17 p.m. on Sunday, November 17. When she failed to respond, he went to her apartment, saw her car in the parking lot and knocked on the door. Obih didn’t answer.

A neighbor who lives in the apartment below Obih’s said it sounded like someone was moving furniture during Sunday afternoon. “It went on for more than three minutes,” the neighbor said, adding that it happened shortly before tornado warnings went off for Sunday’s storms.

Police said Klug had texted a pastor, asking him to call. When the pastor did so, Klug answered and said he couldn’t talk at the time.

Further investigation found that Obih had been stabbed multiple times and her throat cut. A blood trail went from the woman’s bedroom to Klug’s, and police said it appeared “the assailant attempted to clean up in the bathroom area belonging to Mr. Klug.” They also found a bloody towel in Klug’s sink. Police located a plastic bag containing a bloody sock and other clothes stained with blood, including blue jeans, boxers and a shirt. Police said the “amount of blood on these items was significant”.

Police found a trail of small blood drops leading from the apartment to the garage where Klug parked his vehicle. His 2008 silver Subaru Legacy was not parked in the garage.

Klug works for the Indiana Department of Transportation, and police contacted his supervisor, who told them Klug’s behavior had been “off” lately. He sent a text message Sunday, saying: “Sick tomorrow, then vacation next two weeks.” His supervisor said the message was out of character and also violated the department’s vacation time policy. Klug did not return texts or phone calls, his supervisor said. He didn’t show up at work Monday or Tuesday.

Klug’s stepmother and father said they hadn’t heard from him for several days.

His brother told police he’d spoken with Klug about two weeks ago. Klug wanted to get back with a girl he’d dated. The relationship ended about a year ago. His brother told Klug to call her; he said Klug discovered she was dating someone else and told him, ‘I’m losing control’.

Columbus police don’t think Klug is still in the area and said multiple law enforcement agencies were looking for him.

Presidential Scholarship Scheme: 623 Candidates Qualify For Screening

A total of 623 candidates met the criteria for selection for the second edition of the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovation and Development (PRESSID), the Chairman of the scheme, Prof. Julius Okojie, said.

In a statement in Abuja on Friday, Okojie, who is the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, said the second edition of the scheme was for the 2014/2015 academic session.

Okojie, who is the Chairman, Implementation Committee of PRESSID, said that shortlisted candidates would sit for the screening examination on Dec. 10 at Chams Plc, Abuja.

The 446 candidates wrote the test for the first edition of PRESSID for the 2012/2013 academic session out of whom 100 were selected.

Okojie said that the scheme was part of efforts to achieve the goals of Vision 20:2020 and President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda.

”Federal Government of Nigeria has plans to develop a critical mass of professionals, who will serve as catalysts of change and agents of scientific and technological advancement as well as sustainable economic development.

”But this can only be achieved through the sponsorship of outstanding students for postgraduate studies in the top 25 universities in the world.
”This is why the Federal Government has instituted the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovation and Development,” he said.

Okojie said that the scheme was for graduates who obtained first class degrees from recognised and approved universities.

He said the graduates must be in the areas of sciences, medicine, basic medical sciences, engineering, economics, special aspects of biology, nuclear physics, quantitative genetics, medical biochemistry, aeronautical engineering, among others.
