Man Found Murdered In His Mum’s Kitchen In Okitipupa, Ondo State

Ondo State Police officials in Okitipupa are currently working tirelessly to unravel the mystery surrounding the alleged suicide death of a 20-year-old man found murdered in his mother‘s kitchen.

The police want to determine whether the boy, Wale Lijoka, committed suicide or was murdered.

Lijoka was on Wednesday found in a room at 2, Olanusi Avenue, an enclosure between Okeloro and Lebi Streets in Okitipupa.

The body of the deceased was found dangling from the ceiling of the dark small room believed to be his mother’s kitchen.

Sympathisers and neighbours, who went to the scene of the incident, could only see the body through a small window because the entrance to the room was under lock and key.

Mrs. Moyin Lijoka, the mother of the deceased, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the deceased could not have hanged himself, adding that his death was a conspiracy of friends he had misunderstanding with.

She said that the boy, who was an aluminum construction apprentice in Lagos, came to Okitipupa on 18 August to visit her.

“I called him on Tuesday evening to follow me to the church for prayers but he refused, only for me to wake up this morning and find his corpse in my kitchen.

“He cannot kill himself; I believe some assailants killed him and hanged him in my kitchen just to cover-up because his legs were not far from the ground.

“I have called his father who is a police officer in Ilorin.

“He said he did not want to have any issue with the boy’s death, that we should do what pleases us,” Lijoka said.

Meanwhile, a sympathiser who preferred to be addressed simply as Mrs. Ajoke also corroborated the boy’s mother’s claim that the boy could not have killed himself.

Ajoke, who described the scene as gory, also said the deceased was a “rascal” and “street fighter” before he was sent to Lagos for apprenticeship.

“I saw him when he came on 18 August but I did not know if he had a quarrel with anyone.

“From what I observed, his body might have been dumped here and made to look like suicide,” Ajoke said.

The Divisional Police Officer for Okitipupa, CSP Ifeanyi Ohuruzor, confirmed the incident, saying the incident had been reported to his office.

“My officers were at the scene of the incident this morning but we are still investigating what was the exact cause of the suicide,” he said.

Ohuruzor added that the corpse would have been removed but he learnt that a certain ritual must be performed according to the tradition of the land.

14 Illegal Things You're Doing on the Internet

Screen-shot-2013-08-21-at-5-34-17-pm
1. Unlocking Your Phone

As of January, it's illegal to unlock your phone to use across various carriers. However, jailbreaking, or the process of removing limitations on iOS to allow for certain downloads and customization, is still technically legal.

Even when your contract with a specific carrier expires, it's still unlawful to unlock your phone by yourself using third-party methods, under a new ruling from the Library of Congress in January. If you want to switch carriers, authorized unlocking by an authorized carrier is still legal.

Basically, you can't unlock your phone yourself, but you can let AT&T or Verizon do it for you legally.

2. (Parts of) Grooveshark

The seemingly innocent (but always glitchy) Grooveshark has experienced numerous run-ins with the courts. The music streaming service has been sued by record labels such as EMI. Even though the service has settled some charges with certain record companies, many of Grooveshark's tracks are still available to stream illegally.

3. Ad Blockers

Though they may be annoying, those pesky banner, pop-up and in-stream ads that crawl the web are (surprise!) actually paying for the content you are viewing for free. By bypassing these ads, it's almost like not paying the fare to view the content, and in some cases, ad-blocking may be illegal. For certain sites, there's potential for billions of dollars in losses each year, due to visitors not actually seeing advertisers' messages.

4. Making GIFs and Memes

Believe it or not, it's illegal to use copyrighted material without permission. Though it's legal to parody copyrighted material in the vein of criticism, lifting copyrighted material straight from the source is illegal. However, it's almost impossible to prosecute GIF-making (looking at you, Tumblr users) because of its wide distribution and murky original sourcing.

5. Downloading Files and Using Without Permission

An obvious one, it's actually illegal to just pull any old JPG, PNG, PDF or any type of file you'd find from a simple Google search. It's fine to view them online as is, but once you download that image of a cat you're Googling, you have the power to distribute it to your liking, and that's where it becomes illegal. The exemption, of course, is if you are granted specific permission from the owner of the file, or if the material has a fair use license.

6. Working Remotely on a Travel Visa

"Working remotely on a travel visa" may be as simple as checking your work email while you're on vacation abroad. A blurry line to cross, for some countries it is illegal to work within said country but be paid by another. For example, if you're an American citizen working remotely for an American company, getting paid by this American company and paying taxes to the United States, it may be illegal for you to work remotely in the United Kingdom on vacation without a work visa.

7. Connecting to Unsecured Wi-Fi networks

Look over your shoulder the next time you hop on that Starbucks Wi-Fi from across the street. Even though the network's there for the taking, authorized usage of Wi-Fi networks could be counted as illegal under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, which applies to wireless routers.

8. VPN and IP Address Loopholes

Abroad and can't stream Netflix? Screwing around with VPN to make your IP address look like you're in America is one way to circumvent this issue. Of course, it's not technically legal, and the urge to binge-watch TV shows doesn't help either.

9. Sharing Subscription Passwords

Of the millions who subscribe to HBO Go and Netflix, about one-third admit to having shared passwords before. Freeloading on these services isn't hard, and in fact, studies have shown that password-sharing has helped bring new customers to these companies.

10. Parody Accounts

You aren't permitted to operate parody accounts on Twitter without clearly labeling that it's "fake." Under its terms and conditions, Twitter does not allow its users to impersonate others. So, as obvious as it is that @Bill_Nye__Tho (which is legal because it correctly labels itself as not real!) isn't actually @TheScienceGuy, Twitter fears some poor being out there might actually misidentify. It's also against Twitter's policy to squat on usernames, a precaution against bots and spam.

11. Underage Facebook Accounts

If you read Facebook's terms and conditions, the social network does not allow anyone under the age of 13 to register for or operate an account. Not that this is stopping many middle-schoolers.

12. Registering Trademarked Domain Names

Think again the next time you're looking to sit on a domain name before a company gets to it. That business could have the right to sue in the court of law, even though you got there first.

13. Bypassing Paywalls

Though it's as simple as a few Google proxy servers, bypassing paywalls is just another way to get content you're supposed to pay for without actually coughing up the cash.

14. Uploading Copyrighted YouTube Content

Probably the oldest hack in the book, uploading copyrighted material to YouTube is, you guessed it, illegal. But when there's just too much for YouTube to handle, you're still bound to find that '90s Simpsons rerun somewhere in the depths of YouTube -- before mods take it down, that is.

Princeton researchers use mobile phones to measure happiness

Researchers at Princeton University are developing ways to use mobile phones to explore how one’s environment influences one’s sense of well-being.

In a study involving volunteers who agreed to provide information about their feelings and locations, the researchers found that cell phones can efficiently capture information that is otherwise difficult to record, given today’s on-the-go lifestyle. This is important, according to the researchers, because feelings recorded “in the moment” are likely to be more accurate than feelings jotted down after the fact.

To conduct the study, the team created an application for the Android operating system that documented each person’s location and periodically sent the question, “How happy are you?”

The investigators invited people to download the app, and over a three-week period, collected information from 270 volunteers in 13 countries who were asked to rate their happiness on a scale of 0 to 5. From the information collected, the researchers created and fine-tuned methods that could lead to a better understanding of how our environments influence emotional well-being. The study was published in the June issue ofDemography.

The mobile phone method could help overcome some of the limitations that come with surveys conducted at people’s homes, according to the researchers. Census measurements tie people to specific areas — the census tracts in which they live — that are usually not the only areas that people actually frequent.

Microsoft head Steve Ballmer to step down

Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer. File photo.

Microsoft announced on Friday that chief executive Steve Ballmer planned to give up his post within the next 12 months, driving shares of the software giant up 8 per cent in pre-market trading.
The Redmond, Washington-based company said that Mr. Ballmer will leave the company once the board of directors chooses a successor.
“There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time,” Mr. Ballmer said in a statement.
“My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company’s transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction.” The 57-year-old has been with Microsoft since 1980, when he was the first business manager of the then-five-year-old company.
He took over the helm at the company, best known for the Windows operating system and Office productivity software, when founder Bill Gates stepped down in 2000.
Mr. Ballmer has drawn criticism from analysts in the last few years for failing to gain a toehold in the booming market for tablet computers and smartphones, which is now dominated by rivals Apple and Google.
Microsoft pioneered tablet computing a decade ago, but its tablet-friendly Windows 8 operating system, released last year, has been seen as a disappointment that confused many users.
Microsoft Windows 8-based tablet computers have around 4 per cent of the market, compared to 62 per cent for Google’s Android operating system and 32 per cent for Apple’s iOS.
In contrast, the company’s Windows Phone operating system for smartphones has earned strong marks from users, but is also a distant third place behind Google and Apple in many markets.

Pastor in court for duping congregation

A 37-year-old pastor, Kolawole Olugbenga,  on Friday appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, charged with defrauding a member of his congregation of N214,000.
Olugbenga, who lives at No. 19, Arowoshola St., Imota area of Ikorodu, is facing a charge of fraud.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Iyabo Johnson, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometime in 2011.
According to him, the pastor obtained the amount from a businesswoman, Mrs Mosunmola Fashola, on the pretext of praying over it.
She explained that the amount was to be her initial capital with which the complainant intended to use to start a small business.
The prosecutor said that after collecting the money, the pastor converted it to his personal use and had since not refunded it.
Johnson said that the offences committed contravened Sections 312, of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 312 provides a penalty of 15 years imprisonment for fraud.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mr B.A. Sonuga, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000, with one surety in like sum.
Sonuga adjourned the case to Sept. 5 for trial.

Unemployment: Nigerian Graduates washing cars in Kaduna

Graduates have taken over most car wash businesses in Kaduna metropolis to end their endless search for formal jobs.
A correspondent who went round the city reports that the operators were making brisk business and smiling to the banks.
Julius Samba, a graduate of the University of Maiduguri, who operates a car wash centre at Poly Gate, said he ventured into the business when he realised he was wasting his “precious time searching for non existing jobs”.
According to him, he washes as much as 25 cars on a good day and now makes between N80,000 and N100,000 a month.
He said, “i would not go to work for anyone if offered a job now, with 8 persons working for me.”
Mr kelechi Humphrey, who graduated from the University of Abuja in 2009 and now runs a car washing outfit at Barnawa area of the city, said he makes as much as N120, 000 a month.
He told NAN that he charges between N300 and N500 depending on the nature of the car, and makes an average of N4000 daily.
Humphrey advised unemployed youths to utilise their time positively, instead of resorting to acts that would be inimical to their future.
Mr John Vatt, a patron said his street was bad and needed to wash his car before going out everyday, and commended the initiative of the youths in setting up car wash businesses.
Another patron, Ahmed Usman, said car wash washing centres were contributing significantly to reducing unemployment and urged the government to create a special fund to support them.

ASUU - No More Talks With FG - Govt Begins Release of N130 Billion to Varsities

Leaders of striking university lecturers yesterday said they will no longer participate in discussions with government representatives until the agreement reached between the two sides in 2009 is implemented.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began an indefinite strike on July 1, demanding the implementation of an agreement under which government will release N100 billion in 2012 and N400 billion from 2013 to 2015 to address infrastructure decay in the universities.
The two sides have held series of meetings to resolve the impasse, butthis has so far failed because of what ASUU said was an attempt by the government to renegotiate the 2009 deal. The latest discussions ended Tuesday with no headway and no date set for next deliberations.
Speaking at a news conference in Lagos yesterday, ASUU president Nasir Isa Fagge said the union would no longer make any concessions or attend meetings with the government until the previous agreement has been implemented.
"ASUU members nationwide are saying this strike will not be suspended until and unless the government respects the 2009 agreement and makes concrete efforts to implement it in the best interest of the country," he said.
"We insist that we are not going to make any concession anymore. It is either the government honour that agreement or the strike continues. And if government is interested in re-negotiating that agreement, it has to first implement what we first agreed on before we can commence process of renegotiation," he added.
