GUYS ONLY: SOME SEX FACTS ABOUT YOU THAT ARE TOTALLY FALSE

From rumors about feet size to sex life, there's a lot of cultural misinformation circulating about men and their physiques. And men themselves offer precious little clarification what with their tendencies toward joshing around and playing things close to the chest. So for the record, here are five classic assumptions about men's bodies that are totally false.

1. Men think about sex every 7 seconds

"That is as many times as we breathe everyday," Caroll said. "Nobody has that type of mental stamina."

In one of the nation's most comprehensive surveys about sexual habits in the United states, completed by Edward Laumann and colleagues in 1994, 43 percent of men reported thinking about sex not even once a day, but rather somewhere between a couple times a week to a couple times a month.

2. Single guys have better sex lives than married guys

Conventional wisdom says married men get nothing but slumber in their bedrooms, while single studs are "closing the deal." But it is actually those with the vows that are getting it on.

A 2006 study by the National Opinion Research Center found that husbands get lucky between 28 percent to more than 400 percent more often than bachelors, depending on their age. And it is not a ho-hum roll in the matrimonial bed; not only are married women more likely to be orgasmic, married men also give and get more oral sex.
Kind of gives a new twist to the phrase, "I do."

3.Semen is loaded with calories

Seminal fluid is made up of water and nutrients such as vitamin C, calcium and magnesium. It also contains the sugar fructose but only 5 to 7 calories worth per, ah, serving, according to Dr. Rachel Vreeman, also of Indiana University and Carroll's co-author.

"It is unlikely to create a diet issue, but this should not be used in an argument for whatever," Vreeman said.

4.If you shave your beard or head, the hair comes back faster, thicker, and coarser

"If that were true, we'd have a cure for male pattern baldness," said Dr. Aaron Carroll of Indiana University and co-author of "Don't Swallow your Gum: Myths, Half-truths and Outright Lies About Your Body and Health" (St. Martin's Griffin. 2009)

Stubble may look darker and coarser because it has not yet been exposed to sun and other wearing elements. Once it grows in, it looks identical to the hair that was shaved away, Caroll said.

5.Men with big feet also have big ...

It is true that the development of penises and toes (as well as clitorises and fingers) are influenced by the same gene. But the length of one does not predict the length of the other.

In a study of more than 3,000 men, no correlation was found between the self-reported size of feet and that of the crown jewels. Skeptical of a man's ability to size himself up, some researchers have, well, taken things into their own hands.

For example, a 2002 study, headed by Jyoti Shah at St. Mary's Hospital in London, compared foot size to carefully measured privates (all 104 penises were stretched to their longest length for consistency.) No correlation was found.

Sweden has the largest model of the solar system. The Sun is the largest hemispherical building in the world!

The Ericsson Globe is a building in Stockholm. It is the largest hemispherical building in the world. It is also represents the sun in the largest permanent scale model of the Solar System.

The inner planets - those closest to the sun - are also in Stockholm. The further planets are scattered across Sweden.

The model is on a scale of 1: 20 million. It includes the planets, and some of their satellites, dwarf planets and a number of other celestial bodies, such as asteroids and comets.

The outer planets are located in cities along the Baltic Sea. For example, Saturn is in an observatory in Uppsala. And Neptune is in Soderhamn. Pluto's model, which is only 12 cm in diameter is located in Delsbo 300 km from the Ericsson Globe.

Apple CEO Tim Cook joins Twitter amid iPhone launch frenzy

Apple's top exec has not only joined Twitter, but is already using it, posting about his trip to an Apple store earlier Friday.
Apple's CEO Tim Cook has joined Twitter.

Using an account with the name of @Tim_Cook, which is currently unverified by Twitter, Cook posted the following tweet just after noon Pacific, noting that he enjoyed his visit at Apple's retail store in Palo Alto, Calif. -- near Apple's headquarters:

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation that the executive had joined the popular social service, though CNBC is reporting that it's the real deal.

Cook appeared at the company's Palo Alto, store earlier today to partake in the company's launch festivities. That store, which was remodeled last year, has been host to several other appearances by Apple execs, including late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, as well as Scott Forstall, who was in charge of iOS software up until last October.

Cook is the latest Apple exec to join Twitter. Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller has used the popular microblogging service since 2008, and posts things there semi-regularly. Schiller's also used the platform to take cracks at competitors, notably Google and the security of its Android platform with a single tweet this past March that pointed to an F-Secure Labs quarterly Mobile Threat report. There as also Forstall, who joined and amassed more than 59,000 followers, but has never tweeted.

It's unclear whether Cook intends to use Twitter as a way to interact with customers, competitors, the press, or in conjunction with any product details. The executive, who took on the top spot at Apple in August 2011, already had a penchant for replying to customer e-mails, many of which have been posted publicly.

Apple getting its A7 chip from Samsung

Apple's A7 is the first 64-bit ARM processor to land in a smartphone.(Credit: CNET)

Apple has been getting its chips "fabbed" by Samsung for years. That hasn't changed with the A7.
Apple is getting its A7 processor from Samsung, as expected.

By "decapping" the A7, Chipworks has verified that the A7 is manufactured by Samsung.

"Internal shots revealed the A7 to be made by Samsung," said iFixit, which has been working hand in hand with Chipworks to tear down the iPhone 5S.

There had been some speculation that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) would make the chip, but that likely won't happen until Apple's A8, or whatever comes next.

The M7 co-processor is from NXP.

The M7 is a "sidekick" to the A7 chip, according to Apple. It's designed to measure motion data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass.

BlackBerry to retreat from consumer market, lay off 4,500 employees

As was reported earlier this week, BlackBerry will be laying off 4,500 employees, over a third of its workforce. The layoff comes in an unexpected early earnings guidance release, in which the struggling manufacturer reveals it lost almost $1 billion last quarter. The loss is mainly attributable to the failed launch of BlackBerry's Z10 smartphone. The company says it expects a "primarily non-cash, pre-tax charge against inventory and supply commitments in the second quarter of approximately $930 million to $960 million" due mainly to the Z10.

Moving forward, BlackBerry appears to be stepping back from the mainstream consumer market to focus on what it calls "prosumer" and enterprise-focused devices. It says it'll trim its smartphone offerings down from six to just four devices; two high-end, two entry-level. Its new Z30 smartphone is clearly aimed at the high-end, with the Z10 to be "re-tiered" as an entry-level handset — expect deep price cuts in the near future.

Speaking on today's news, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins called the changes "difficult, but necessary... Going forward, we plan to refocus our offering on our end-to-end solution of hardware, software and services for enterprises and the productive, professional end user." The quote is as clear an indication as you'll get that BlackBerry sees no future for itself as a maker of consumer smartphones.

Trading of BlackBerry's stock was halted this afternoon ahead of the huge announcement.

Researchers Identify Switch That Controls Growth of Most Aggressive Brain Tumor Cells

Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have identified a cellular switch that potentially can be turned off and on to slow down, and eventually inhibit the growth of the most commonly diagnosed and aggressive malignant brain tumor.

Findings of their investigation show that the protein RIP1 acts as a mediator of brain tumor cell survival, either protecting or destroying cells. Researchers believe that the protein, found in most glioblastomas, can be targeted to develop a drug treatment for these highly malignant brain tumors. The study was published online Aug. 22 in Cell Reports.

"Our study identifies a new mechanism involving RIP1that regulates cell division and death in glioblastomas," said senior author Dr. Amyn Habib, associate professor of neurology and neurotherapeutics at UT Southwestern, and staff neurologist at VA North Texas Health Care System. "For individuals with glioblastomas, this finding identified a target for the development of a drug treatment option that currently does not exist."

In the study, researchers used animal models to examine the interactions of the cell receptor EGFRvIII and RIP1. Both are used to activate NFκB, a family of proteins that is important to the growth of cancerous tumor cells. When RIP1 is switched off in the experimental model, NFκB and the signaling that promotes tumor growth is also inhibited. Furthermore, the findings show that RIP1 can be activated to divert cancer cells into a death mode so that they self-destruct.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 30 percent of brain tumors are gliomas, a fast-growing, treatment-resistant type of tumor that includes glioblastomas, astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, and ependymomas. In many cases, survival is tied to novel clinical trial treatments and research that will lead to drug development.

First woman Bishop appointed in Britain, Ireland

Pat Storey was appointed the first woman Bishop in Britain and Ireland, the Anglican Church of Ireland announced on Friday.

The married 53-year-old is to become the bishop of Meath and Kildare, in the Irish Midlands.

She said she was “both excited and daunted by this new adventure”.
The Church of Ireland encompasses both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

The Church in Wales and Scotland have passed legislation allowing women bishops but have not yet appointed any, while the Church of England is expected to approve legislation soon in spite of strong opposition from traditionalists.

Storey, who has two children, grew up in Belfast, studied in Dublin and was until now a Rector in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
Richard Clarke, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland said: “Having known Pat Storey since she was an undergraduate and I was Chaplain at Trinity College, Dublin, I very much welcome her as a new bishop.

“She is a person of great warmth, intelligence and spiritual depth.”

ASUU LIKELY TO CALL OFF STRIKE NEXT WEEK

The Vice President Namadi Sambo has, in a bid to end the continuous gridlock in the dialogue between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and federal government, taken over the negotiation process. The government’s negotiation team was formerly headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim.

Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Villa after the closed door meeting, the ASUU President, Nasir Fagge, said that he was taking back a “message given to him at the meeting for his members” and that Nigerians would have to wait for the response of his members on the way forward.

“We have had a meeting with the Vice President and he has given us a message to our members, and we said that as the messengers that we are, we are going to deliver the message faithfully to our members and then they will take the decision.”

According to him, “I know Nigerians are expecting a solution to the strike, we also want a solution, but I have been given a message to our members. The message is not for Nigerians, it is for our members”.

“If I deliver the message, our principal will decide and we will get back to the ministry of education within this week,” he added, saying the union would get back to the education minister on its stance on the government’s latest offer.

The federal government had offered N100 billion and N30 billion for infrastructure development in various universities and payment of verified earned allowances of lecturers respectively. It is not clear if the government made an improved offer for the lecturers whose only demand is that government implements fully the 2009 agreement.

The Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, who was also at the meeting, explained that the meeting had been convened to find a lasting solution to the crisis.

“One is quit hopeful that ASUU is committed, they have the passion and that there is the need for us to move the education sector forward.

“ASUU coming to discuss means that they are committed on their own part and that the federal government is also committed. We have gone very far, we believe that in no distance time, you will have a very good result,” he said.

Also on the ASUU delegation were two former Presidents of ASUU, Dipo Fasina and Abdullahi Sule-Kano.

Other members of the government’s delegation included the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie; as well as the Vice Chancellors of Bayero University Kano (BUK), University of Ibadan (UI) and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi, Abdulrasheed Abubakar, Isaac Adewole, and Muhammed Muhammed respectively.

X-Factor: DJ Switch wins Glo’s N24m, Sony Music deal

*DJ Switch collecting her cheque

Sensational rapper Obianuju Catherine Udeh, popularly known as DJ Switch, has been crowned Africa’s first X-Factor winner.

The 29-year-old Geology graduate of the University of Port Harcourt and native of Udi, Enugu State, was declared winner at the grand finale of the show held at Dream Studios, Bamako Street, Omole, Lagos. She beat the two other finalists Ethel Eshun and Vicky Gomoti in the last round of voting to win Globacom’s N24 million cash prize and a recording contract with Sony Music.

Before the announcement of the results, the expectation of audience, judges and contestants alike had built to a crescendo as everybody waited anxiously to find out who the first X Factor winner in Africa would be.
The suspense was to last even longer as Glo ambassador from Ghana, Efya, came on stage for a wonderful performance that had the audience applauding rapturously. After her performance, X Factor host, Toolz, turned to the judges and sought to know how they felt about the night.

“Shake” and “Ada Ada” crooner, Flavour, came onstage next to thrill guests with a scintillating performance. He proved why he was a crowd favourite as the audience rose to their feet to dance along with him. After Flavour’s performance, the contestants came out to sing the songs they sang at the audition stage.

Vicky led the performances, and she got a standing ovation from the three judges. “How did your daughter perform?” Toolz inquired of Onyeka. “She has grown from a pupa to a butterfly. She sang with confidence and inner joy. I had goose pimples just listening to her. I have no doubt that she’ll make it. May God bless you.”

DJ Switch came up next, and reacting to her performance, MI said, “Switch, people scream when you perform because you inspire us all. When you came for the audition, I felt you tried. I had already made up my mind that you wouldn’t make it to my final three mentees, but you changed my mind. Everybody here needs to know that no matter what people say about you, it doesn’t matter as long as you fight.” he concluded. Reggie gushed, “DJ Switch, you are inspirational; you excite me. My children love you; everybody loves you!” As for Onyeka, she opined, “Unlike the other judges, the moment you stepped on stage, I knew you had it.”

Eshun was the next to perform, and she pulled out all the stops as she shimmered in her green attire. Then the climax! The contestants held hands together as they anticipated the results that would change the lives of one of them forever. The first runner-up was Eshun and she got the sum of N1m for her efforts, while Vicky, the second runner-up, also got N1m.

The world’s first playable beer bottle

Auckland band Ghost Wave becomes the first band to release their single in playable bottle format, in this inventive campaign for Beck's.

Inspired by legendary inventor Thomas Edison, Matt Tizard and the team at Shine Limited has created the world’s first playable beer bottle for Beck's beer.
Auckland band Ghost Wave's new single, Here She Comes, has been inscribed into the surface of the bottle, which can then be played on a specially-built device based on Edison’s original phonograph.
Shine enlisted the help of Auckland firm Gyro Constructivists, who created a record cutting lathe. From there, Shine built the playable bottle from a range of modern materials, electronic wiring and indenting the label with grooves to play 'Here She Comes'. Matt Tizard and others talk about the inspiration behind the project and the process involved in the making-of video above.
The campaign is right in line with Beck's current promotional activities - it's has been working over the last few years on growing a record label using online advertising and packaging campaigns.
Be sure to check out some of the other fascinating projects that co-creators Gyro constructivists have been involved in, such as a suitcase that unfolds into the shape of the Eiffel Tower for Louis Vuitton.

Sony Losing $60 For Every PS4 Unit Sold

Sony Losing $60 For Every PS4 Unit Sold

One of the main differences between the Sony PlayStation 4 and the Microsoft Xbox One would be its price. The Xbox One is priced at $499 while the Sony PlayStation 4 will be priced at $100 less at $399.
One of the reasons Sony can afford to make their console cheaper was because it did not come with the PlayStation Eye, unlike the Xbox One which comes bundled with the Kinect. However it seems that despite not coming bundled with the PlayStation Eye, Sony is still making a loss on the console.
According to a report by Eurogamerwho has been told by their sources, Sony is making a loss of about $60 for every PlayStation 4 console sold.
Naturally Sony declined to comment on the figures and actually denied them, but it was only because the company believes that they will be able to make back the loss through the sales of PlayStation Plus memberships.

Sony will not be the first company to make a loss on a product just to sell it at a cheaper price point. Amazon was reported to have made a loss on Kindle Fire tablets which they expected to recoup through the sales on apps and books purchased via their store. In any case loss or no loss, the difference of $100 will definitely make a difference to gamers who might not have the budget:

how to fix battery drain iOS 7 battery life problems – how to fix battery drain

iOS 7

iOS 7 iOS 7 is a significant upgrade to the iPhone series’s software. However, it does introduce a pretty serious problem – battery drain. Web browsing stamina tests have shown that it’s not just in our minds, either. iOS 7 really is a more power-hungry system than iOS 6. However, there are ways to mitigate iOS 7 battery drain. Follow these tips and tricks for better iPhone battery life.

 1. Restore the phone as a new device. The most certain way to solve any true battery life problem is by restoring your iPhone as a 'new phone'. Having to reinstall apps is a pain, but this move helps to solve all manner of performance and battery life issues. To factory reset the phone from the handset itself, go to Settings > General and scroll right down to the bottom, to the Reset item. There are options to reset all settings and reset the phone completely. The latter is more drastic, but is sure to flush out any gremlins.

2. Turn it off and on again It’s a bit The IT Crowd, but it’s amazing how often we hear people complain about their iPhone misbehaving without even having tried to properly reset the thing. Rogue apps doing things they shouldn’t is a key reason for battery life issues in any phone, and a proper reset will fix this in many cases. iPhones aren’t really designed to be turned off all that often – and much as we expect you know how to do it, a long press on the power button (around three seconds) brings up a power off slider that turns the phone off properly. For a ‘hard’ software reset, press down on both the Home and power buttons until the screen goes black.

 3. Use the quick function toggles, a lot Turning off additional features is the top tip of any frugal battery fiend. iOS 7 makes this much easier than ever before. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and you’ll bring up the Control Center. At the top of this pop-up is an array of five circular icons that toggle features on and off – Airplane mode, Bluetooth,Wi-Fi, Do Not Disturb and auto-rotate. Most people barely use Bluetooth – switch that bad boy right off – and turn Wi-Fi off when out and about unless you really need it. iOS 7 intermittently searches for new Wi-Fi networks, which is a drain on the battery.

 4. Turn down screen brightness, dummy As standard iPhones use automatic brightness, taking readings from an ambient light sensor on the phone’s front to determine how bright the IPS screen’s backlight need to be. However, you can still manually determine the base level of brightness while still using this clever sensor. You’ll find the slider (and the auto brightness toggle) in the Wallpapers & Brightness menu of Settings, and also in the Control Center menu, accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

 5. Turning off AirDrop AirDrop is one of iOS’s brand new features.  It lets iPhone and Macs talk to each other directly, using Wi-Fi Direct. It’s a neat idea, but it drains battery by searching for nearby iPhones. In iOS devices that support the feature, you’ll find an AirDrop toggle in the Control Center pop-up menu, accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

 6. Turn off elements of the Notifications menu Another new bit in iOS 7 is the pull-down notifications menu. As well as new emails, texts and so on, it can pull in stock market info. This requires the phone to pull it from the net, so it will drain a wee bit of battery. Plus, who really wants stock market info anyway? To turn off stock info within the Notifications bar, go to Settings > Notification Center. Here you’ll find toggles for calendar info, reminders and the stock ticker.

 7. Ease up on Mail notifications Push email is one of the joys of the modern smartphone, but easing up on the frequency of email checks will reduce strain on the battery. For the best battery stamina of all, turn off push emails and make the iPhone only search for new data when you manually search. You’ll find these options in Settings > Mail > Fetch New Data. Alternatively, you can set iOS 7 to search for mail every hour, every 30 minutes or every 15 minutes.

8. Invest in a desk dock charger So simple it seems almost offensive to mention it, but charging your phone more often is a must with iOS 7. However, the key to this is making it easier to do so. We recommend investing in a desk charger dock if you work in an office, as it’ll make keeping your phone charged much less of a pain. Belkin makes a lovely-looking Lightning port charger dock that costs around £24 (search for 'Belkin Lightning dock' on Amazon), and will take an iPhone or iPad. Alternatively, if you can splash out a bit more and want a dock for the bedroom, the dinky Philips D3205 speaker dock - £80 from the Apple Store – is well worth a look.

Android KitKat release set for October, Nexus 5 too?

Mobile Phones

Android KitKat is coming next month. That's the word from the chocolatiers at Nestlé who lent their name to the next update for Google's operating system for mobile phones and tablets -- which could mean the Google Nexus 5 is imminent too.

Each new Android update is shown off by a new Nexus phone, and if KitKat is coming then it follows the hotly-anticipated Nexus 5 will come along in a matter of weeks too.

Android KitKat is named after the famous four-fingered chocolate bar. For ages everyone expected the next generation of Android 4.4 to be called Key Lime Pie, but the Big G decided to go for a more internationally recognised snack, closing the deal in less than 24 hours after first calling KitKat maker Nestlé. While I love a KitKat Chunky as much as the next man, Nestlé is notorious for its aggressive promotion of powdered milk in the third world and somewhat chequered human rights record.

We expected to see Key Lime Pie at Google's annual I/O developer conference earlier this summer, where Google usually reveals new updates.
