An ethiopian tribe that Beats Women so Hard In a Bid to strenghten them

Incredible photos shed light on Ethiopia's Hamar tribe and how females are beaten and scarred with thorns to prove their strength

The beatings take place during their brothers' initiation ceremonies which for them involve jumping over a line of 15 cattle. The women volunteer for the beatings which they say show how much they have suffered for their brothers and will remind them to help them when times are tough for the tribe.

COOL!! All New UNILORIN Students to get tablet Computers- VC

All newly admitted students of the University of Ilorin will have a PC tablet each to boost the institution’s ICT drive and enhance e-communication between the students and their lecturers.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, disclosed this last Wednesday (October 2, 2013) while answering questions on a special Unilorin 89.3 FM live interview programme, ‘Talk to the VC’, to mark his one year in office.
Prof. Ambali said, “We hope to start a new era with those coming in because we have to empower them to face the challenges of the ICT world,” adding that “all the curriculum and courseware will be on the tablet so that you have the whole classroom on your hand.”

The Vice-Chancellor charged the students to concentrate on their primary reason for coming to the University, which is learning, noting that his administration is committed to providing a comfortable environment for the students with adequate accommodation facilities on campus.

Prof. Ambali also noted that the University was committed to producing graduates endowed with requisite entrepreneurship skills in order to prepare them for the larger society.

Scientists trace 19 living relatives of Ötzi the Iceman whose 5,300-year-old body was found frozen in the Alps

Austrian scientists tested the DNA of 3,700 male blood donors in Tyrol
They matched a genetic mutation to the mummy found back in 1991
Scientists in Austria have found 19 living descendants of a prehistoric iceman whose 5,300-year-old body was found frozen in the Alps.

Researchers from the Institute of Legal Medicine at Innsbruck Medical University took DNA samples from blood donors in Tyrol in the west of the country.

They managed to match a particular genetic mutation with that of Ötzi, whose body was discovered back in 1991.

Descendants: Scientists have found 19 living relatives of Ötzi the Iceman who was found frozen in the Alps

It's all relative: The prehistoric iceman had a genetic mutation which matches those whose DNA was sampled in Austria
Experts now believe that the same mutation might also be found in the nearby rgions of Engadine in Switzerland and the South Tyrol region of Italy.

According to the BBC, Walther Parson from the university, said: 'We have already found Swiss and Italian partners so that we can pursue our research.'
DNA from around 3,700 blood donors were analysed and the men were also asked to provide information on their ancestry.

None of the donors have been informed that they are distantly related to Ötzi.

Since the body was found frozen under the Alps two decades ago, scientists have conducted experiments to learn how he came to be buried between the Austrian and Italian borders more than 5,300 years ago.

The gadget that can tell you how many calories are in your dinner just by scanning it

Is this the future of dieting?

Tellspec contains a spectrometer to analyse the chemical compounds in food
The keyring-sized device can also list allergens, chemicals, nutrients and ingredients in food - as well as the calories
Its Canadian creators hope to raise funds via crowdsourcing site Indiegogo for the £180 gadget, which can even scan food through plastic
For anyone watching their weight, it could be a perfect gadget - a keyring sized sensor that can tell you exactly how many calories are in your food simply by scanning it.

The small handheld gadget, which works with a mobile phone app, contains a spectrometer to analyse the chemical compounds in food.

From this, its Canadian inventors claim it can ‘tell you the allergens, chemicals, nutrients, calories, and ingredients in your food’.

The creators hope to raise funds via crowdsourcing site Indiegogo for the £180 gadget, which can even scan food through plastic, so savvy shoppers can roam the supermarket checking their food before they buy it.

It works by scanning the food and uploading the data to special web server.
There’s an algorithm that creates a report, which is sent to a mobile phone app revealing the food’s contents.

The small handheld gadget, which works with a mobile phone app, contains a spectrometer to analyse the chemical compounds in food. From this, its Canadian inventors claim Tellspec can tell you the allergens, chemicals, nutrients, calories, and ingredients in your food

HOW IT WORKS
The small scanner contains a spectrometer.

Light is made up of particles called photons.

When you beam the low-powered laser in the TellSpec scanner at the food, some of the photons are absorbed, raising the energy states of the molecules in the food.

Lower energy photons are then reflected back.
The spectrometer inside the TellSpec scanner sorts these photons by wavelength and counts them.
The resulting numbers, called a spectrum, describe the chemical compounds in the food.

This spectrum is uploaded to a web server where it is analysed.
Information about the allergens, chemicals, nutrients, calories, and ingredients in the food is then downloaded to you and displayed on your mobile phone.

Microsoft pays $100k bounty to British researcher who found Windows 8.1 bug

Photograph: James Forshaw, who works for Context Information Security, discovered the bug in a preview version of the Windows 8.1 system.

Microsoft has paid $100,000 (£62,600) to the British researcher James Forshaw for finding a critical security flaw in the software firm’s upcoming Windows 8.1 operating system.oft

Forshaw, a researcher for the security firm Context, found a “mitigation bypass” – a hack that circumvented the protection systems built into Windows 8.1 which could have allowed hackers widespread access to the system.

“While we can’t go into the details of this new mitigation bypass technique until we address it, when we strengthen platform-wide mitigations, we make it harder to exploit bugs in all software that runs on our platform, not just Microsoft applications,” said Microsoft’s senior security strategist, Katie Moussouris.

Forshaw said it had taken three and a half weeks to find the flaw, responding to “a very specific brief” from Microsoft.

“I think I originally came up with the winning idea sitting at home, pondering what I could do. When it comes to vulnerability testing, though, the eureka moment is more about the final working proof of concept. There are so many stumbling blocks that can trip you up along the way that you just can’t get too excited too quickly.”

Kadpoly emerges 3rd in Enactus international competition in Mexico

Kaduna Polytechnic emerged third among 35 countries that participated in the Entrepreneurship in Action and Us (ENACTUS) international competition in Cancun, Mexico.

Kadpoly’s ENACTUS team beat 40 other contesting schools in July at the Student in Free Enterprise national competition in Lagos, before heading to Cancun to represent Nigeria at the four-day event which ended October 1.
In third position, Kadpoly beat higher institutions from countries as widespread as the United State, China, France, Malaysia, Singapore and Korea, said the school’s rector Mohammed Ibrahim when he received the team on its return.
He said: “The euphoria that greeted the national victory has not yet died down when the team once again demonstrated the quality Kaduna Polytechnic is reputed for by emerging third out of 35 countries that participated in the competition.”
Ibrahim said the victory by Enactus Kadpoly, formerly Kadpoly SIFE, was the result of two of its numerous outreach projects, including Project Evergreen, executed in Mai’adua and Kaita Local Government Areas of Katsina state and the Power in my Palm (PIMP) project at Kaduna State Rehabilitation Centre.
