Surgeon pioneers new technique to CHANGE the colour of the iris

Coloured contact lenses are all the rage and now one surgeon has designed a permanent way of changing people's eye colour. The procedure, called artificial iris implant, involves inserting a thin, medical grade silicone implant into the eye to alter the appearance of the iris.

It was pioneered by Dr Kenneth Rosenthal, of the Island Eye Surgicentre in Long Island, New York.

The artificial iris implant can be used for cosmetic reasons but it can also be used to treat some medical conditions, such as heterochromia - a pigment condition which causes a person to have one eye a different colour to the other.
In some cases, the procedure can even be used to restore sight.
Dr Kenneth Rosenthal has pioneered the procedure which takes 15 minutes per eye and is carried out under local anaesthetic

The procedure involves making a small incision in the cornea before inserting the implant into the eye and moving it into position

Smartphones Will Be Smarter Than Humans By 2017, Enough To Perform Tasks As A ‘Secret Digital Agent:' Report

Over the next four years, smartphones will become so intelligent that they will be able to predict their owners' next move, their next purchase or even interpret their actions, according to a new Gartner report, which says that smartphones will be able to perform such tasks using what has been described as “the next step in personal cloud computing.”
“Smartphones are becoming smarter, and will be smarter than you by 2017,” Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, said in a statement on Tuesday at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2013, which is taking place in Barcelona, Spain, from Nov. 10-14. “If there is heavy traffic, it will wake you up early for a meeting with your boss, or simply send an apology if it is a meeting with your colleague. The smartphone will gather contextual information from its calendar, its sensors, the user’s location and personal data.”

According to Milanesi, the transition from mobile phones to smartphones is attributed to two main factors -- technology and apps. While the former is responsible for features such as cameras, location-based intelligence and sensors, the latter has connected such features to an array of sophisticated functions that have improved users’ daily lives.

Initially, smartphones are expected to perform basic tasks, such as booking a car for its yearly service, creating a weekly to-do list, sending birthday greetings or responding to everyday emails. However, as consumers become more confident about their smartphone's ability to perform certain menial tasks, they are expected to begin allowing more apps and services to take control of other, more crucial, aspects of their lives, which according to analysts, “will be the era of cognizant computing.”

2 US mariners kidnapped in Nigeria freed

The state department says two American mariners kidnapped last month off the coast of Nigeria have been released.

Spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Tuesday that the US welcomes the release of the two Americans, but said privacy concerns prevented her from disclosing any details about how they were freed.

US officials earlier identified the two as the captain and chief engineer of the US-flagged C-Retriever offshore supply vessel.

Nearly all foreigners kidnapped are released after ransoms are paid.

Nigeria's navy has rescued at least two hostages this year and reported killing several pirates in counterattacks to prevent ship hijackings

US names Boko Haram as terrorists

The State Department will formally designate the Nigerian Islamist militant group Boko Haram as a "foreign terrorist organization" on Wednesday, congressional sources and others briefed on the matter said.

The designation is significant because it directs U.S. law enforcement and regulatory agencies to block business and financial transactions with Boko Haram, which wants to impose Islamic law in northern Nigeria and has ties to al Qaeda.

The move makes it a crime under U.S. law to provide "material support" to the group. A State Department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Boko Haram and other splinter Islamist groups are seen as the biggest security threat in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and top oil exporter.

In May, President Goodluck Jonathan increased a military campaign against Boko Haram. His government said last week that it has killed 70 civilians.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee, which a source said has been notified of the decision, has scheduled a hearing on the group for Wednesday.

"The likelihood of more hearings on this issue may have been a final straw in encouraging the State Department to acknowledge something which has been apparent for some time - the growing relationship between Boko Haram and al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula," said U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan, a Pennsylvania Republican who convened his own hearing on the issue.

"MAJOR CONCERN"

Meehan chairs a Homeland Security subcommittee, not a Foreign Affairs committee, and has not been briefed by the State Department. "Boko Haram is of growing influence and of major concern," he said.

Last year, the Justice Department's senior top national security official, Lisa Monaco, sent a letter to the State Department arguing that Boko Haram met the criteria to be listed as a "foreign terrorist" group because, she said, it either engages in terrorism that threatens the United States or has a capability or intent to do so.

Monaco is now President Barack Obama's top White House counter-terrorism advisor.

Although the State Department later designated three alleged Boko Haram leaders as terrorists, it stopped short of a more sweeping declaration against the organization.

For two years, Meehan and Rep. Peter King of New York have pressed the State Department to put Boko Haram on its list of terrorist groups alongside the likes of al Qaeda and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

D-Prize: $20,000 to Pilot Your Social Enterprise Idea

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The world theoretically ended poverty decades ago. Advances in health, financial services, and technology have illuminated a clear development path for the poor. Unfortunately, development theory alone never fed a child. The great need now is for social entrepreneurs to find ways to distribute these interventions to actual people.
For example, a one hour long “sugar daddy awareness” class reduces unwanted teen pregnancy by 28 percent, but is rarely taught. Solar lamps increase study hours and income potential, but have a market penetration of only 1 percent. Praziquantel is a 10 cent drug that treats a common parasitic disease, yet 220 million people still need treatment. Poverty solutions exist – but nobody has figured out a systematic and scalable way to distribute them.
D-Prize is a call to the world’s brightest social entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. Submit your idea to start a new distribution initiative in one of our challenge areas below. If selected, we will award you $10,000-$20,000 to pilot your idea over a three-month trial period, and connect you with mentorship from already successful social entrepreneurs. D-Prize will fund a total of 5-15 social entrepreneurs. If your pilot is successful, we will help you to launch your work and attract significant support.

ELIGIBILITY: D-Prize is a call to the world’s brightest social entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.

2014 Ocean Awareness Student Contest

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Did you know that plastics account for 80% of all ocean pollution?

This is one of the most pressing challenges facing the ocean. Right now, there is more plastic in the ocean than phytoplankton, a microscopic plant creature that sustains life for the entire food chain!
Plastics pose a huge threat to the ocean ecosystem because they do not biodegrade. Instead, they continue to break into smaller and smaller pieces, which litter the ocean and its beaches. Countless sea animals and birds die each day from ingesting and getting entangled in plastic debris.
For this year's contest, we want you to explore the major questions surrounding ocean plastic pollution. Why is there so much plastic in our oceans? Where does it come from? How does it affect ocean animals and ecosystems? Is this a problem worthy of international attention? Are there alternatives to plastic that could help alleviate the ongoing problem of ocean pollution? How does our “throwaway culture” impact the amount of plastic in our oceans?
We invite you to explore these questions and more in the 2014 Ocean Awareness Student Contest, which runs through June 15, 2014. You may work alone or in a group, and submissions can take one of the three following forms: Art, Essay and Advocacy.

Professor Iyayi Killed by Kogi Governor’s Convoy

Professor Festus Iyayi

Tragedy struck Tuersday when the former President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Festus Iyayi, was killed in a ghastly motor accident.
The former ASUU president was said to be on his way to Kano with three other members of ASUU, University of Benin chapter, when the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a police escort vehicle in the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Capt. Idris Wada, around Lokoja, the state capital.

Following the impact, the vehicle was knocked off the road and somersaulted three times, killing the professor of Business Administration instantly.

The unfortunate incident happened at Banda village yesterday when the governor was returning from an official engagement in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In a statement by Jacob Edi, Special Adviser to the Governor, Media, the Kogi State Government said the convoy was moving at 80 kilometers per hour when a bus collided with the escort vehicle.

The condition of Iyayi’s three other colleagues was also described as critical at press time yesterday, as they were said to be in a coma.

The statement added that at least six victims with varying degrees of injuries from both sides are currently hospitalised,

Edi said Wada ordered a full-scale investigation into the accident, when he paid a visit to the injured.

An ambulance was said to have been dispatched from Benin to Kogi State to convey Iyayi's body to Benin.

Iyayi was part of the ASUU negotiating team, which met with the federal government last week, and was travelling to Kano in continuation of efforts to resolve the logjam that had ensued over the strike with his colleagues, before his death.

His death yesterday threw ASUU and the University of Benin community into mourning.

Reacting to Iyayi's death yesterday, President Goodluck Jonathan commiserated with the leadership and members of ASUU over his tragic death.

He equally extended sincere condolences to Iyayi’s family as well as his colleagues, friends and associates across the country and beyond.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the president joined them in mourning the renowned academic and award-winning writer.

“Iyayi rose to national prominence in the 1980s with his courageous leadership of ASUU in its struggle for a better working environment for teachers and academics in the nation’s university system,” the president observed.

Jonathan said he was particularly dismayed by the fact that Iyayi had sadly lost his life while going to contribute to efforts meant to finally resolve the current ASUU strike which has unfortunately disrupted academic studies in most of the nation’s universities for over four months.

Jonathan prayed for God to comfort all who mourn Iyayi and grant his soul eternal rest.

Also, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, condoled the Nigerian academic community and the family of Iyayi on his tragic death.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, Tambuwal described the deceased as a respected teacher and unionist who gave his all for the progress of the education sector.

According to the speaker, late Iyayi's lifetime of struggles would no doubt inspire many upcoming lecturers and unionists to render selfless services to their country.
While urging ASUU and the Federal Ministry of Education to immortalise the late professor, Tambuwal prayed to the Almighty God to give his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

In the same vein, organised labour yesterday expressed shock over the death of Iyayi.
A statement by the Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Issa Aremu, said the Nigeria labour movement had indeed lost a tested and committed activist of decent work in the universities and Nigerian labour market.

The statement said Iyayi would be remembered for the honesty, commitment and abundant energy he brought to the struggle of working men and women for improved working and living conditions.

It added that the death of Iyayi was a reminder to the federal government to urgently bring to a permanent end the persistent crisis of funding of public education.

“Late Festus would be remembered for the honesty and commitment, as well as abundant energy he brought to the struggle of working men and women for improved working and living conditions.

“The fact that he tragically died while reportedly travelling for the resolution of the four-month long strike of university lecturers was an eloquent testimony to his life and deeds; service to the working people and humanity!

“Fighters and comrades like comrade Festus hardly say goodbye. In literary and metaphoric terms, Festus is the latest major casualty of Nigeria's crisis of governance.
“Accidents are the norm (not exception) along the notorious Kogi-Lokoja road which for well over a decade remains under permanent ‘construction’ and ‘rehabilitation’ despite serial awards of contracts by various governments,” the NLC lamented.

In another statement on the tragedy, the Chairman, University of Ibadan branch of ASUU, Dr. Segun Ajiboye, who regretted the incident, said it was a sad day for the union, which has lost a rare gem and a great leader with an impeccable character.

Asked if the union will still go ahead with its planned National Executive Council (NEC) meeting today, he said members of the union were in deep mourning (all Nigerians should be) and were not thinking about anything at the moment, except the loss the past leader.

In his reaction, Prof. Friday Okonofua, of the University of Benin, held Wada for being responsible for Iyayi's death.

“It is the governor of Kogi that killed him. He was killed by a reckless convoy. He killed one of our most distinguished academics who had won laurels from all over the world. We would hold the governor of Kogi responsible for his death,” Prof. Okonofua said.
