Meet The Woman With World’s Longest Dreadlocks.

The real life Rapunzel: World record holder says her 55ft long dreadlocks could paralyse her but she will never cut them
Asha Mandela said she would be a 'zombie' if she cut her hair

Has grown dreadlocks for 25 years and they now weigh three stone

Doctors said her hair has given her a curvature of the spine

She is the real life Rapunzel with 55ft long dreadlocks that are longer than a bus.

Despite being warned by doctors that her hair that weighs three stone could paralyse her, Asha Mandela said she will never cut them.

The mother-of-one from Atlanta, Georgia, said: 'My hair has become part of me. It is my life. I will never cut it.

Record Breaking: Asha Mandela started growing her hair 25 years ago following a 'spiritual calling'

Dangerous: Doctors have warned Mrs Mandela that her three stone hair could paralyse her

'Cutting it would be equivalent to suicide. It would be like being a zombie.'

Mrs Mandela, 47, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest dreadlocks.

Her incredible hair has also brought her fans across the world and she has launched her own secret hair formula on the back of her success.

It takes two days to wash and dry her hair, which weighs the same as a reception-age child, and is even heavier when wet.

It can also get easily trapped in doors or snag on bushes.

She has to wind it up into a baby sling when she leaves the house which gives her a greater degree of freedom.

But Mrs Mandela worries that 'someone with a hair fetish' will cut off a lock of her hair when she is not looking.

Doctors have also asked her to consider cutting her hair for health reasons, including the risk of bacterial infection.

But their main concern is the weight.

She said: 'The doctors seem to think I have a curvature of my spine and that it's the length and the weight of my hair that's making me curve.

'Some have said my neck has collapsed at the back and that I need to be careful because I could start having spasms in my spine and probably be paralysed.'

Mrs Mandela, who has a 11-year-old son, Zion, with her second husband, said her hair has helped her love life.

She said: 'My hair has never caused a problem with intimacy. I think it adds a little spice on top.'

Mrs Mandela, who is happily married to her third husband, was born in Trinidad and Tobago.

She began growing her hair 25 years ago following a 'spiritual calling'.

Her baby: Despite the weight of the dreadlocks, Mrs Mandela said she would feel like a 'zombie' without them

On display: Mrs Mandela stands on a ladder (left) and at the top of the stairs (right) to show off her World Record-breaking dreadlocks

Part of her: Mrs Mandela credits her dreadlocks with helping her battle cancer

Her mother did not want her to because she thought it would make her daughter more likely to start smoking cannabis.

She even carried on growing her hair while undergoing chemotherapy.

Eventually a friend suggested she speak to Guinness and in 2009 they crowned her with the title of world's longest dreadlocks.

They officially measured 19ft 6in but an unofficial measurement this week put one strand of her hair at an incredible 55ft 7in long - almost three times the official length.

She said: 'I was amazed when she first walked through the door. My first thought was - "God, how much am I gonna have to charge her".

'Now I see it as an honour to work with someone with so much hair and to be able to do something good with it.

Individuals Exposed to Nicotine While in the Womb Are More Likely to Become Smokers

Children born to mothers who smoke are more likely to develop addictive behaviors later in life, study finds

Researchers writing in the Journal of Neuroscience argue that women who smoke during pregnancy risk giving birth to children who are more likely to pick up this habit once they reach adulthood.

What's more, these children risk developing into adults who also tend to consume a tad too much alcohol and fatty foods.

Experiments carried out on rats indicate that, at least in the case of this species of rodents, prenatal exposure to nicotine fosters the production of one too many neurons that are responsible for stimulating appetite,Nature tells us.

Thus, rats born to mothers that had been injected with a small amount of nicotine on a daily basis showed a tendency to eat more fat-rich foods, self-administer nicotine and also drink alcohol if given the opportunity to do so.

The researchers suspect that their findings also hold true in the case of humans, and urge pregnant women not to light up while expecting.

They say that, according to their investigation, just one daily cigarette is more than enough to up the chances that the newborn child will develop addictive behaviors during his adolescence and adulthood.

The NSA is capable of monitoring 75 percent of U.S. Internet traffic

The National Security Agency has the capacity to reach roughly 75 percent of all US Internet traffic and while we’ve been told this is all done to target terrorists and the like, the agency sometimes retains the written content of e-mail messages sent between citizens in the US according to the latest report from the Wall Street Journal.
Current and former officials further told the publication that the NSA also filters domestic phone calls made over the Internet. The filtering is done with the cooperation of numerous telecom companies under the guise of searching for communications that either originate or terminate abroad or are entirely foreign but happen to pass through the US.
These programs go by a number of names including Blarney, Fairview, Oakstar, Lithium and Stormbrew, just to name a few. Blarney is said to be associated with AT&T although naturally, the telecom declined to comment when questioned by the Journal. More than a dozen filtering locations are spread across the US at major Internet junctions, we’re told.
None of this is really new behavior, however, as the US government was intercepting Internet traffic well before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Afterwards, the NSA expanded the reach of surveillance programs to collect more data when the government broadened its definition of reasonable collection.
For example, in the months leading up to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the FBI and the NSA worked with Qwest Communications International to intercept and monitor the content of all e-mail and text communications in the Salt Lake City area.

Court orders former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak freed

An Egyptian court has ordered the release of deposed leader Hosni Mubarak, state-run media outlet Al-Ahram reported Wednesday.
The former president will remain in custody for 48 hours, pending the prosecution’s appeal, the report said.
State-run TV channel Al-Masriya cited a lawyer for Mubarak as saying he may be released on Thursday.
The court’s reported ruling comes at a time of turmoil in Egypt, where an interim military government has been in charge since Mubarak’s successor, Mohamed Morsy, was ousted as president last month.
Over the past week, about 900 people — security personnel as well as citizens — have been killed. Deaths occurred when the military used force to clear two pro-Morsy sit-in sites in Cairo on Wednesday last week and violence raged after pro-Morsy supporters staged demonstrations Friday.
Mubarak ruled Egypt, the most populous Arab country, for three decades until demonstrators opposing his rule forced his ouster in 2011 as part of the Arab Spring revolutions across Africa and the Middle East.
He was convicted in 2012 in the deaths of numerous protesters, but was later granted a retrial.
After a lengthy trial, he and his former interior minister, Habib al-Adly, were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison last year on charges that they were complicit in the protesters’ killings. After appealing their convictions, they were granted a new trial early this year.
Mubarak, 85, has been held since his guilty verdict last year. After months spent in a military hospital, a public prosecutor sent him back to prison in April.

FRSC to apprehend car owners with old number plates from October 1st

The FRSC in  Oyo State  on Wednesday  vowed  that  motorists driving vehicles with  old number plates would be apprehended and prosecuted as from October 1, 2013.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the state’s Sector Commander, Mr Godwin Ogagaoghene, said the validity of the old number plates would expire on September 30, 2013.
“I can assure you that from the first day in October, car owners still going about with the old number plates would be apprehended for violating the order.
“The cost of changing over from existing old number plates to the new is cheaper than if you are to obtain fresh number plates for cars that are to be newly registered.
“I, therefore, urge the public to ensure that they change over to the new number plates before October 1,” he said.

SCIENCE: New steps in the quest to break the code of life

New steps in the quest to break the code of life

The deciphering of the human genome in 2000 was a major milestone in the history of science and a vital step towards the more complete understanding of human life
.

But like many advancements in science, what it really did was lay the groundwork for a far more challenging task: to understand the intricate and diverse modes of action of the proteins, which are the products of genes.
Understanding protein function on a genomic scale is now one of the central goals of biology. EU-funded project ENZYME MICROARRAYS ('An integrated technology for the deconvolution of complex biochemical systems, drug discovery and diagnostics') was aimed at developing new techniques to help better understand protein functioning.
Proteins are the large biological molecules that perform a vast array of functions within living organisms, including catalysing metabolic reactions, replicating DNA, responding to stimuli, and transporting molecules from one location to another.
Until now, the lack of appropriate technologies capable of dealing with the complexity of the entire set of proteins expressed by a genome, the so-called 'proteome', has represented a major obstacle.
ENZYME MICROARRAYS researchers at the Munich Technical University set out to develop a novel enzyme microarray technology (EMT), as a powerful tool for studying one class of proteins, the enzymes. Enzymes are large biological molecules responsible for catalysing multitudes of chemical activities that sustain life.
The project's novel EMT relies on the development of chemical probes that can be used to monitor the activity of a multitude of enzyme microarrays - a large number of enzymes arranged in classes and attached to a solid surface.
Researchers used the technique in conjunction with designed chemical libraries in order to perform a detailed, en masse, molecular assessment of the activity of important families of enzymes.
Large scale correlations were carried out to test new hypotheses about the involvement of enzymes in networks that govern many important biochemical processes. With its success, the ENZYME MICROARRAYS project has taken us another step closer to a more fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of life.

Facebook joins tech giants to launch ‘internet.org’

There are huge barriers in developing countries to connecting and joining the knowledge economy, says Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Social networking giant Facebook has joined forces with six other technology giants including the likes of Nokia and Samsung to launch “internet.org” with an aim to make Internet access affordable for people across the globe.
Focussed on enabling the next five billion people without access to come online, the founding members of the project include Facebook, Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm and Samsung.
The initiative will see the partners collaborate on developing lower-cost, higher-quality smartphones and deploying Internet access in underserved communities.
“Everything Facebook has done has been about giving all people around the world the power to connect. There are huge barriers in developing countries to connecting and joining the knowledge economy,” Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement.
Internet.org brings together a global partnership that will work to overcome these challenges, including making internet access available to those who cannot currently afford it, he added.
“Our industry is now at an exciting inflection point where Internet connectivity is becoming more affordable and efficient for consumers while still offering them great experiences. Universal internet access will be the next great industrial revolution,” Nokia President and CEO Stephen Elop said.
Internet.org is influenced by the “Open Compute Project”, an industry-wide initiative that has lowered the costs of cloud computing by making hardware designs more efficient and innovative.

GENIUS GUYS: Linux Hackers Rebuild Internet From Silicon Valley Garage

Alex Polvi is living the great Silicon Valley archetype. Together with some old school friends, he’s piecing together a tech revolution from inside a two-car Palo Alto garage.
He’s like Dave Packard or Steve Jobs or Sergey Brin — at least up to a point. The difference is that, from his vantage point here in the 21st century, Polvi views his garage with a certain sense of irony — “straight-up Palo Alto-style,” he says — and he harbors ambitions that suit our particular time. He wants to change the way we build the entire internet, making this worldwide network of computer servers as easy to update as the browsers on our laptops.
Inside that Palo Alto garage — the door open to the Silicon Valley summer sun, and the camping gear stacked against the wall — Polvi and his colleagues are fashioning a new computer operating system known as CoreOS. This isn’t an OS for running desktop PCs or laptops or tablets. It’s meant to run the hundreds of thousands of servers that underpin the modern internet.

The project is based on Google’s ChromeOS, the new-age laptop operating system that automatically updates itself every few weeks, but unlike ChromeOS, it can run more than just your personal machine. It can run every web service you ever visit, no matter how big. And it will let the companies that run those services evolve their online operations much more quickly — and cheaply — than they can with traditional server software.
“We’ve borrowed a lot of concepts from the browser world,” Polvi explains, “and applied them to servers.”

How Windows, OS X, and Ubuntu are slowly turning your PC into a smartphone

“Consumers are mainly driven by simplicity and familiarity,” says Carolina Milanesi, Gartner’s research vice president of consumer technology.
In a word, people yearn for consistency. And as the industry struggles to satisfy that demand, mobile design is bleeding over to the desktop—though the Big Three PC operating systems are approaching the convergence in drastically different ways.
“Microsoft’s philosophy is ‘Okay, we want to be consistent across our operating systems,’ and the way it worked in their brains was to just make one,” says Ben Bajarin, the director of consumer technology at Creative Strategies. “Whereas Apple said, ‘Well, we’ll make two [operating systems], but we’re going to have gestures and some UI consistencies [across iOS and OS X] so that you have a consistent experience.’”

Shoprite ramps up African expansion with 47 shops

Shoprite, Africa’s biggest grocer, is ramping up its expansion across the continent with 47 new supermarkets as its core South African consumer base grapples with high personal debt levels and growing fuel and transport costs.
Nearly half of South Africans failed to pay back their debts for three straight months this year, prompting banks to tighten their lending criteria, while a weaker rand currency fuelled inflation and higher petrol prices.
“It’s tough out there,” Shoprite deputy managing director Carel Goosen said at the presentation of the company’s full-year results.
Cape Town-based Shoprite, which reported an 11 percent rise in full-year profit that fell slightly short of market expectations, said it could double its stores outside of South Africa in the next four years.
Shoprite has 153 supermarkets in 16 countries outside South Africa. Those foreign outlets registered a 28 percent jump in sales in the 12 months to the end of June, nearly three times the rate of growth in its home market during the same period.
The bulk of the new stores would be in oil-rich Nigeria and Angola. The company sees scope for 44 new outlets in Nigeria and 21 in Angola in the next three to four years, Chief Executive Whitey Basson said.
After more than two years as an investor favorite, South African retailers are fast falling out of favor due to concern that high personal debt levels and reluctance among banks to lend more will squeeze spending in Africa’s biggest economy.
South African retail sales grew by a smaller-than-expected 1.9 percent in June, data from the government statistics office showed last week.

FUTA Student, Okada Rider Killed By Nigerian Policeman In Ikorodu, Lagos – Riot Claims 2

A FUTA Student has been killed untimely by a wicked Nigerian Police officer identified as Aruna Ayodele. This happened on Tuesday August 20, 2013.

The student of the Federal University of Technology of Akure in Ondo State came to Lagos to make some money because of the ongoing ASUU strike.

The 21-year-old student identified as Kunle popularly called Ifa was shot dead by a Nigerian policeman in Ikorodu area of Lagos for disobeying ban on Okada.

The extra-judicial killing of Kunle has led to a violent riot with people running for their lives.

Some angry youths attacked some motorists and burn tyres in major roads connecting to Ikorodu on Tuesday afternoon.

Officer Aruna Ayodele who claims Kunle violated Lagos traffic law took the law into his hands when he shot him dead.

The deceased who came from a poor family used the opportunity to save enough money for his education pending the end of the ongoing ASUU strike.

Since July, Nigerian higher institutions lecturers have been on strike and negotiations with the Federal Government have deadlocked.

A former e-editor for Channels TV who witnessed the whole incident took to his twitter page to reveal what actually happened.

ASUU Strike - FG Summons Varsity Councils, VCs

The Federal Government has summoned the governing councils and the vice-chancellors of all the universities over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday instructed the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led government negotiating team to meet the governing councils and the vice chancellors within the week.
Suswam disclosed this to State House correspondents in Abuja yesterday after an emergency meeting attended by Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim, Chief of Staff to the president Mike Oghiadomhe as well as Education, Finance and Labour Ministers.
Suswam, who heads the Needs Assessment Committee of Universities, said the president's instruction was aimed at updating the governing councils and the vice chancellors on some of the decisions taken on the earned allowance and the N100 billion physical infrastructure budget.
The governor did not provide the details on the decisions, but said the government opted to meet the governing councils and the vice chancellors "because earned allowance is something that can be certified by the management and councils of the universities".
According to him, the government hopes to see the strike end as soon as the ASUU is satisfied with the measures taken so far.
Reiterating the government's commitment to flagging off the N100bn project comprising hostels, classrooms, lecture theatres, libraries and laboratories in the universities across the country on September 1, he stressed that procurement process would be followed.
Suswam claimed that the government had shifted its ground by offering N30 billion to assist the various university councils on the contentious issue of earned allowance.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the federal government to honour its agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in order to end the ongoing strike that has paralyzed academic activities in the nation's public universities.
In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said no government worth its salt can afford to play with education, because it is the path to national development.
It said ASUU was not making any fresh demand beyond the agreement it reached with the government in 2009, adding that "Agreements are meant to be honoured, and breaching them comes with some consequences."
The statement said the strike which has kept students in public universities at home for many weeks is a further blow to the country's education system.

SCIENCE: Dentist Wants to Clone John Lennon Using DNA Extracted from a Tooth (photo)

People fantasizing about a Beatles comeback tour might yet see their dream come true, all thanks to Dr. Michael Zuk. This dentist is the proud owner of one of John Lennon's teeth, and plans to use it to clone the musician.

By the looks of it, Dr. Michael Zuk came in possession of the tooth in 2011. At that time, he purchased the molar at an auction organized in the United Kingdom, and paid about $30,000 (€22,424) for it.

This DNA would serve to bring back John Lennon. Apparently, Dr. Michael Zuk hopes that his project will snowball into a scientific and pop-cultural revolution.

“To potentially say I had a small part in bringing back one of Rock's greatest stars would be mind-blowing.”

“I am nervous and excited at the possibility that we will be able to fully sequence John Lennon's DNA, very soon I hope,” the dentist reportedly commented on the importance of his work.

Oddly enough, Dr. Michael Zuk's confidence in the success of his scientific project stems from the fact that quite a lot of researchers are now trying to perfect a method of cloning mammoths.

The dentist says that, as long as science manages to bring these long-lost creatures back to life, there is no reason why the same technological advances could not be used to resurrect rock legends.

“With researchers working on ways to clone mammoths, the same technology certainly could make human cloning a reality,” he says.

“Many Beatles fans remember where they were when they heard John Lennon was shot. I hope they also live to hear the day he was given another chance,” he adds.

For the time being, Dr. Michael Zuk has chosen not to disclose too many details concerning how the process of cloning John Lennon will unfold. Here's hoping he'll soon release some more information.
