America's heaviest baby- Mother recalls 'painful' pregnancy carrying 14lb boy

The mother of the heaviest baby born in the U.S. this year recalls her painful final weeks, when she could barely leave her bed.
Utah mother Sara Brandon gave birth to son Joel Brandon Jr (nicknamed J.J.) on May 9 at Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem and she and her husband were shocked when he weighed in at 14lbs. For comparison, that's the weight of a typical Thanksgiving Turkey.

'It's painful let me tell ya,' she told Good Morning America today. 'My last couple weeks I really couldn't get out of bed.'

Bath time: Utah mom Sara Brandon gave birth to son J.J. in May and he weighed 14lbs - the heaviest born this year in the U.S.

Not an easy birth: The mother of Joel Brandon Jr says her final weeks of pregnancy were so painful she could barely get out of bed

Truckdriver builds world's largest amateur telescope using 900 pound mirror originally meant for Cold War spy satellite

Clements bought the 900-pound mirror — which was originally destined to go into space as part of a spy satellite until the edge of it was chipped during its manufacture — after it was auctioned off.

He picked it up in 2005, knowing it would help him fulfill his dream of building a huge telescope. Many people told him the shape wouldn't work, and that it would distort the view, but he said he couldn't pass it up.

'I've been interested in telescopes my whole life. I've always had bad vision, and telescopes have been almost like a prosthesis for me. I've always been obsessed with astronomy and planets and building things.

People told me there's a limit you reach and then the pros have to do it, and people told me this mirror would never work, but I just had to have that mirror,' said the 51-year-old, whose excitement over the project is barely contained in his breathless, pauseless sentences.

Impressive: Mike Clements stand with his homemade 70-inch telescope in Herriman, Utah. While the primary mirror is 70 inches, the black metal structure itself stands about 35 feet tall, supporting a secondary mirror that is 29 inches

According to plan: While the primary mirror is 70 inches, the black metal structure itself stands about 35 feet tall, supporting a secondary mirror that is 29 inches, which makes it one of the biggest telescopes created by an amateur astronomer

Girls are going through puberty earlier than ever - and OBESITY is to blame

Girls are going through puberty earlier and earlier, a new study has found. This is thought to be because of increasing rates of childhood obesity. Girls are going through puberty earlier and earlier, a new study has found. This is thought to be because of increasing rates of childhood obesity.

U.S. researchers have found that white girls start to develop breasts at about nine and a half - a few months earlier than in the 1990s. African American girls, on the other hand, now start to develop breasts just before they turn nine, on average.

The researchers studied data from 1,200 American girls who were enrolled in the study between the ages of six and eight.  At each check-up, experts assessed the girls’ breast development. They found African American girls first show signs of breast development at eight years and 10 months, on average.

Hispanic girls first show signs of breast development at nine years and four months on average, and white and Asian girls at nine years and eight months.

For white girls, they found that puberty is now hitting about four months earlier than in a 1997 study that also measured breast development.

They also discovered that heavier girls tend to start developing breasts at a younger age.

Island of debris the size of TEXAS from 2011 Japanese tsunami is headed straight for the U.S.

An estimated 5 million tons of debris washed into the ocean in March of 2011 during the tsunami. Around 70 percent of it is believed to have immediately sunk near the Japanese coast. Some more mobile items may have reached the Pacific Northwest before 2011 even came to a close. The first documented piece of debris to arrive in California, a barnacle covered fishing boat, came ashore in April 2013. The particles are dispersed sparsely from Alaska to the Philippines.

The Texas-sized trash island is located northeast of the Hawaiian Islands. Some of the more mobile items have been documented as washing up on the coast of California as early as 2011.

Oprah Winfrey sells her personal belongings and raises $600K for charity

She is the queen of television and one of the most powerful women in the world.

But she is also known for being one of the most charitable and generous stars around.

And on Saturday Oprah Winfrey showed she was even prepared to part with her own possessions for a good cause.

Generous: Oprah hosted a yard sale to raise money for her charity which educates underprivileged children in South Africa

The 59-year-old star hosted a giant yard sale offloading hundreds of personal items and raising $600,000 for charity in the process.

The charity fundraiser took place both online and at a live auction at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in California. The Queen of Talk sold a variety of different goodies ranging from luxurious furniture to signed enlarged framed prints and random homeware items.

One lucky and wealthy bidder bought a set of six 18th-century Louis XVI armchairs with hand-embroidered details for the pricey sum of $60,000.

Many of the items sold for much higher prices than they were actually worth because the megastar’s fans were so keen to own something from one of their idol’s many homes in Hawaii, Indiana and California.

Homes: This sprawling estate in Montecito, California is just one of several homes owned by the star

An enlarged print of a TV Guide photo of Oprah sold for $3,000 whilst two long velvet sofas sold for $8,750.

Shortly before the sale which was held to raise funds for the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation College fund, the Osca-nominated star spoke of her motivation to offload her belongings saying: ‘It’s just too much stuff. I talk about it a lot in O magazine. We talk about decluttering. And I realised, I need to declutter my own life. It is very freeing. I am downsizing.’

Oprah added, ‘I’m trying not to be attached to things. I’m trying to live the life that I talk about, like not letting things define you. But it’s hard’.

The proceeds from the yard sale will go to Oprah’s school in South Africa, which is dedicated to helping graduates attend colleges and universities around the world.

Lagos: Another teenager stowaway bid foiled

Another teenager yesterday attempted to stow away and was apprehended at the airside of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos. He attempted to stow away on an Allied Air Cargo aircraft that was preparing for take-off.
This came almost one month after the Nigeria Police, Airport Command, paraded three teenagers for attempted stow away at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, MMA, Lagos.
The incident, according to airport sources, occurred in the early hours of yesterday.
The teenager whose name could not be ascertained at the time of this report was spotted by the airside staff of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, NAHCo, who were handling the aircraft.

After his arrest, he was handed over to Aviation Security, AVSEC, of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN.
The sources further said the boy was taken out of the airside by AVSEC officials to an unknown place.
However, coordinating spokesman of the aviation agencies, Mr. Yakubu Dati could not be reached for his comments at the time of this report.
It will be recalled that the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Salahu Waheed, said the three stowaway suspects, Lateef Popoola, 13; Amadi Joshua, 14; and Ukpabio
Onyedikachi, 14, were arrested at different times at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja.
Waheed, while handing over the suspects to their mothers, had said there was a need for their respective state governments to rehabilitate them like the Edo State Government did with teenage stowaway, Daniel Ihekina, who was arrested on August 24, 2013 after sneaking into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik plane.

Aishat Farooq emerges the best graduating student of the Bells University despite unwanted pregnancy

Aishat Farooq emerges the best graduating student of the Bells University of Technology Seven years after an unwanted pregnancy forced her to drop out of the University of Ilorin.

When Aishat Farooq gained admission into the University of Ilorin at 15, to study Zoology, little did she know that she was not going to be an alumnus of the institution. That was in 2003.

Despite the fact that she was a high flyer in her first two years in UNILORIN, the now 25-year-old indigene of Ilorin West-Local Government Area of Kwara State got distracted along the line. She played the campus love game and got a shocking result: she got pregnant.

Aishat with her son, Damilola

It was in 2006 and in her third year. She was pregnant for a fellow student whom she had been dating. She was disappointed in herself and thought the whole world was crashing on her. Yet, she vowed not to terminate the pregnancy.

Although she wanted to continue her studies in the university, she became disillusioned and dropped out at 18. She sought consolation in trading.

But her father, Mr. Shehu Farooq, who believed that his daughter’s academic prowess should not be wasted, was determined to get her back on the academic track.

Today, Aishat has a different story to tell. On Saturday, she stood tall among her peers at the 5th convocation ceremony of Bells University, Ota, Ogun State, where she emerged the overall best graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.93.

“The rebel in me won,” she declared while giving the valedictory address on behalf of the 208 graduating students of the university.

“I hope my story will inspire at least one person to change his or her circumstance. I was pregnant at 18 and by 19 I was already a mother. I had disappointed my father who believed so much in me. He had such big dreams for me and feared the dreams would become unfulfilled,” she added.

Breaking the news of the pregnancy to her father, who was at the time based in the northern part of the country, was not easy. Aishat’s mother, Fatima, who stayed in Lagos with the family, did not break the “sad news” to the man until the lady was almost due. The mum feared her husband would be too angry.

Fatima narrated to our correspondent, “Looking back, we knew her to be very brilliant. But all of a sudden she got pregnant. Though her father and I were always discussing on the telephone, I hid it from him. Whenever he said he would be coming to Lagos to visit us, I would quickly chip it in that I would like to be the one to visit. So, I ensured I was the one always visiting him.

“That was how I managed the situation until the pregnancy was eight months. But even when we broke the news to him, he felt really bad. Although there was nothing he could do, he couldn’t go out for three days.”

Aishat studied Business Administration with specialisation in Human Resources Management, and received the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for the Overall Best Graduating Student with a cash reward of N50,000 and a plaque. She also won the College of Management Sciences Prize and Department of Business Administration Prize for the Best Graduating Student.

Speaking with our correspondent after she received the awards, Aishat, whose face beamed with smiles, expressed gratitude to her dad for not losing hope in her during her trying time.

She noted that the popularly-held notion that the child that goes astray belongs to the mother, while the good ones belong to the father, was not applicable in her situation as her father did not give up on her.

Asked why her dad had so much hoped in her, she stated that her history of academic excellence from childhood right to the university was a major driving force.

Aishat, who attended Nazareth Nursery and Primary School, Lagos; Penny International College, Lagos and Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja, said she bagged several academic awards while growing up and noted that she secured admission to UNILORIN the same year she completed her secondary education.

She noted, “I did exceptionally well and bagged awards in the schools I attended. I had the overall best result at the Senior Secondary School Certificate level at Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja. In fact in UNILORIN, I was on the first class grade in my first year but in 200 Level, I dropped to second class upper division because I had already started getting distracted by the boys.

“It just happened that things turned out the way it did. But here I am, a product of God’s unending mercies, unconditional love and grace – all coupled with the faith my dad had in me and my fierce determination.

“I’m a goal getter. I push myself hard. Even here (BELLSTECH) in spite of being a mother, I was pushing for the best despite the challenges. I wanted to make my dad proud again. Once you are determined, nothing is impossible. Nothing can stop you.”

She said her decision to study Business Administration as against the sciences, which she was studying in UNILORIN, was informed by her two-year experience in the world of business after she dropped out of university.

She explained that incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, however, informed her decision to attend a private university. “Age was no longer on my side and I wanted to do it fast. And my dad could afford it because he was a businessman,” she added.

Asked if she was involved in any relationship at the Bells, she explained that she was a popular “snob” on campus because the majority of male students were younger than her. Besides, she did not want to get distracted or disappoint her parents and herself again.

Aishat, who has been posted to Lagos State to observe the mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme, said, “If you ask around you will be told that I was a snob. My favourite spot was my room. I rarely went out of the room for social events. I went to mosque. However, when I contested for the president of my departmental association, Business Administration Students Association, the Nigerian system worked against me.

“I lost to my male opponent. Although I had plans to take some giant strides if I won, especially in the academic aspect for my fellow students, the fact that I was not the type of person who hangs out worked against me. I didn’t have a social life.”

She said she has no plans for marriage for now. She wants to pursue a master’s degree programme in Human Resources in the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. She added that she also plans to work in a corporate environment to garner experience and afterwards go back to the university to teach “as a way of giving back.”

The second child in a family of eight children, Aishat brought her six-year-old son, Damilola, to the convocation. It was, however, learnt that the Edo State-born father of the boy has since got married to another woman.

She noted that her major challenge on campus was the randomness of classes which denied her the opportunity of spending quality time with her son while her stay in the university lasted.

“We had visiting professors who came into the campus at anytime. Although we had schedules, many of them had a bit of flexible time. Sometimes on Sunday when I took permission to visit my child in Lagos, my classmates would call me up on the phone that there was going to be a class. Because attendance is very important, I had to rush down. This affected me a little,” she added.

Aishat’s father advised parents to give their children and wards the best of tutelage and close monitoring. He noted that he least expected the feat achieved by his daughter as he was at a time disturbed that “she could no longer make it.”

Asked if it was lack of adequate monitoring that made Aishat go astray at UNILORIN, he said, “Let’s just say that is how God wants it. You see, 70 per cent of the fault is on us the parents. Parents should give their children good supervision and tutelage. With this, they cannot derail. I thank God for her because it’s is not easy to have raised her from grass to grace.

“I screamed on the phone the day I learnt she was pregnant. I started asking questions: When, where and how. I burst into tears. But today, she is a new being. And I know the mistake will not repeat itself. My expectations for her are that she should fly higher and higher.”

Some other graduands who distinguished themselves were also recognised at the convocation ceremony.

Kolawole Lawal, who finished from the Department of Economics with a CGPA of 4.73, received the Olusegun Obasanjo’s Prize for being the best graduating student with outstanding academic performance and leadership qualities. Former President Obasanjo who is the Chief Promoter of the university, also attended the event.

Francis Sogunle, from the Department of Computer Science, who had a CGPA of 4.74, received the Chancellor’s Prize for excelling in external competitions of academic nature.

At the ceremony, 208 students were awarded first degrees with Aishat and 13 others being conferred with first class degrees, while 64 of them got second class upper degrees; 83 bagged second class lower; just as 43 were awarded third class degrees. Meanwhile four of the graduands finished with pass degrees.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Isaac Adeyemi, charged the graduates to be patriotic and dedicated to nation building.

“Our beloved country is currently going through a rather stressful period. All hands must be on deck to seek lasting solutions to militancy and insurgencies and disregard for the rule of law. This is the time to prove your worth as you can’t afford to fold your arms or sit on the fence,” he observed.

Microsoft buys all electricity from Texas wind farm

Microsoft says the farm in question is the “Keechi Wind project, a 110 MW wind facility 70 miles northwest of Ft. Worth, Texas, near the town of Jacksboro. The wind farm is on the same electric grid that powers our datacenter in San Antonio.”

“By purchasing wind,” the post continues, “we will reduce the overall amount of emissions associated with operating Microsoft facilities in this region and hopefully spur additional investment in renewable energy in Texas.”

The wind farm won't come online until 2014 and will eventually comprise 55 turbines that Microsoft is keen to point out will be made in the US of A.

Powering data centres with renewable energy is becoming very fashionable. Google's doing it in Oklahoma and Apple's decided the sun shines out its bottom line, inasmuch as its newest bit barn will be entirely solar-powered. Facebook chose Iowa for a new bit barn because that state is also full of windy electricity operators.

That trend looks likely to continue, as Microsoft's announcement of the deal says it will be the company's “first long-term power purchase agreement” and “will certainly not be our last”. ®

Microsoft adds hard drive import/export service to Windows Azure

It was just last week that Microsoft updated Windows Azure with its Hadoop-based HDInsight service. Today, the company announced yet another large update for the enterprise cloud-based service with many more new features, including the introduction of the Windows Azure Import/Export Service.

Microsoft VP Scott Guthrie revealed the details of the update in a blog post, stating that the Import/Export Service will let customers ship physical hard drives to a Windows Azure data center. He adds:

Once we receive the drives we’ll automatically transfer the data to or from your Windows Azure Storage account. This enables you to import or export massive amounts of data more quickly and cost effectively (and not be constrained by available network bandwidth).

The service uses BitLocker disk encryption so that the hard drives are safe from hackers even if something happens to the drives during the shipment process. Only 3.5 inch SATA II drives are supported at this time by the Import/Export Service.

In addition, Microsoft has added a new Virtual Machine gallery, shown above, that Guthrie says should make it easier for Azure customers to make new VMs in the cloud. It includes new search and sorting options and a way to filter images such as those that might use pre-release software.

Web Sockets can now be used on Windows Azure Web Sites with this new release and it also includes support for New Relic's monitoring and analytical tools.

10 year old boy discovers supernova 600 million light years away

Canadian Nathan Gray has discovered a supernova in the field of the galaxy designated PGC 61330, which lies in the constellation of Draco (the dragon). Winning the hearts and minds of boys everywhere, Nathan has taken the title from his sister, Kathryn, who was the youngest supernova discoverer back in 2010.

The Gray kids are something else. Kathryn's original discovery got her meetings with astronauts such as Neil Armstrong, Bill Anders (Apollo 8), Victor Gorbakto, and Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 & 13).

Nathan’s discovery has been posted on the International Astronomical Union’s site, and confirmed by US and Italian observers. Its provisional name is: PSN J18032459+7013306, and to get an official supernova designation a large telescope needs to confirm the unique supernova light signature via a spectrum.

Supernovas are rare events. The last one known to occur in our galaxy occurred several hundred years ago, before the invention of the telescope. The odds of discovery can be increased by repeatedly checking many other galaxies. A new supernova reveals itself as a bright point of light that wasn't there the last time the galaxy was checked. Since a supernova can outshine millions of ordinary stars it is easy to spot with a modest telescope.

All this comes from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), which having been founded in 1868, is really old by Canadian standards. Nathan and Kathryn are the children of RASC member Paul Gray. Nathan made his discovery going over images taken by another RASC member, Dave Lane, who runs the Abby Ridge Observatory (ARO) in Nova Scotia.

FEMALE STUDENT CHARGED WITH STEALING SUITOR’S N300,000

A 27-year-old female student, Tobechukwu Uzo, was yesterday arraigned before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing N300,000 from her suitor.

The court was told that the accused is an undergraduate at Ecole Supreme Management University in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Gabriel Ekundayo, Uzo, who resides at Abati Barrack, Surulere, Lagos, committed the act on Oct. 17, at No. 16 Abata Street, Orile-Iganmu, Lagos.
Ekundayo said the money belonged to Mr Ifeanyi Aneke, in whose home the offence was allegedly committed.
He told the court that Aneke invited the accused to his house, and that he discovered that the money was missing after she left.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Criminal Code of Lagos State. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Olajuwon, granted her bail for N100,000 with a surety.
Olajuwon ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and with verifiable address.
The case was adjourned to Dec. 20 for mention.

ASUU/FG LATEST: After 13hours in closed doors, The meeting was successful

FG’S: Offer is full of expectations and hope....ASUU members to decide on FG’S fresh offer

After thirteen hours of negotiations, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge on tuesday morning was not forthcoming with the new Federal Government’s offer as he insisted that his members have the final say on the issue.

Speaking with State House correspondents, he said that the meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan discussed how to tackle the problem of University education system in the country.
ASUU being a body can not just call off the strike instantly, but will first have to go back to their members to give account of their meeting with FG and table the FG's new proposal before them, after which they can now collectively decide whether to call off the strike or not.
So discard any report suggesting that the strike has been called off tonight. We still have to wait for a couple of days before we hear anything official from ASUU.

He said: “Well we have had lengthy meeting with Mr. President, rubbing minds on how best to address the problem of University education in this country.”

“And we now have a message from Mr. President we are going to take to our members. And we are expecting that our members will respond appropriately to the message of Mr. President.”

On whether the lecturers are going back to the classroom, he said: “That is up to our members.”

Asked what the message was, he said: “I can’t tell you. Its not for you. It is for our members.”

If impressed with the message, he said: “Don’t put words into my mouth. Our members will determine that.”

Also speaking with journalists at the end of the meeting, the Minister of Labour Emeka Wogu said: “We made progress, the President of ASUU told you that they are going back with a message from the Federal Government back to their members. And the message is full of high expectations and hope.”

On whether the strike will be called off, he said: “That is why the message is full of high expectations and hope. So our prayers is that they come back with positive outcome. They might not even come back to meet us, they might take decisions there that will meet your expectations.”

“Nigerians should be patient for ASUU to finish their meetings and come out with a message to Nigerians.”

Responding to whether the Federal Government made a fresh offer, her said: “Well, the offer we made are the offer they are taking in line with the 2009 agreement. The issues that led to the strike are issues contained in the 2009 agreement and we did not go beyond the agreement.”
