Horrifying Pictures from Typhoon Haiyan........ Too many lives lost and homelands deserted!!

Piled unceremoniously in an ugly trench, almost 400 bodies decay in the heat as they are arranged hastily in a mass grave.

The 393 corpses, most of which have not been identified, were piled four wide in tunnel excavated in a local cemetery in the storm-hit city.

Contained in little more than bin bags, the bodies show the scale of death visited upon the city by the unprecedented power of Typhoon Haiyan.

Fewer than 60 of those buried have been identified. Officials in the city tallied deaths on a whiteboard, which stands at more than 4,000 in the country so far, topping a previous estimate that as few as 2,500 may have died.

Tacloban mayor Alfred Romualdez said many bodies would also have been swept out to sea and their bodies lost after a tsunami-like wall of seawater slammed into coastal areas.

One neighbourhood with a population of between 10,000 and 12,000 was now deserted, he added. Elsewhere in the city corpses lay decaying in the streets. Quick burial is necessary to avoid the spread of disease, as cold storage areas and morgues in have been damaged.

Mikel, Yaya, Emenike in Caf African player of the year list

Africa football’s governing body has announced the remaining candidates to win the prestigious individual trophy this year, with five Nigeria players making the cut.

The Confederation of African Football have released the 25-man nominees for the 2013 African Player of the Year with title-holder Yaya Toure, Galatasaray star, Didier Drogba and Borussia Dortmund attacker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang among the candidates to win the individual award.

John Obi Mikel is accompanied by four Super Eagles teammates following the African champions’ impressive 2013 campaign. They include Emmanuel Emenike, Sunday Mba, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa.

Liverpool star, Victor Moses is however the suprise exclusion from the list. The winner will be announced at the Glo-CAF Awards Gala scheduled for Thursday, January 9, 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria.

Osun: 4 injured as secondary school students engage in a bloody fight

Pandemonium broke out in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, when four students were reportedly injured as some students of Baptist High School, Jaleymi,  Osogbo  engaged in a bloody fight with some secondary school students from another school in town.

Though the cause of the clash was unknown as of the time of filing this report, eyewitness informed Saturday Tribune that the clash lasted for almost two hours before operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) could restore order in the area.

However, some teachers, who pleaded anonymity  hinted that clash was precipitated by rivalry between two cult groups.

Sources informed our correspondent that some male pupils armed with machetes and other weapons  invaded the school in the morning and engaged the male students of the school in a clash  which eventually culminated in the sudden closure of the school.

When Saturday Tribune visited the school premises on Friday, students  were  spotted trooping out of the school enmasse before the official closing time with some parents rushing to the school to take home their children.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and policemen were deployed to the school to restore peace so as to prevent the development from degenerating into a complete breakdown of law and order.

Some of the witnesses said four students were injured while the clash lasted, but security agencies were able to arrest  two male pupils and two female pupils.

However, some of the students and residents around the school contended that those arrested were not the ones involved in the clash.

When contacted, the  Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Mr. Ayo Olowe, confirmed the incident, explaining that the situation was put under control through the prompt response from the men of the command.

Sanusi To Lecture In France After CBN Tenure

This is exclusive. CBN governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi will be taking up a lecturing job at a university in France after his tenure at CBN ends next year June. For a man with such global standing, I think it is only expected that ivory towers around the world go after him for knowledge dissemination.

Sanusi has always said he wanted to do his PhD but banking job made it difficult for him to achieve that, after gaining PhD admission a couple of times. I think now is the time for him to fully face academics and go ahead to become a professor.

Being a great writer, with often strong views, I also think newspaper houses in Nigeria should start approaching him to take up a weekly column. We will like to keep reading from him.
