Alarm Clock Wakes You To Show When You’ll Die

An alarm clock that sets out to actually alarm its owner first thing in the morning is set to go into production.

ALARMclock has a retro-style LED animation which can be programmed to start the day with information that shocks its user into awareness.

The makers say it can deliver “motivating data about your financial status, the size of your social networks, and your projected life expectancy”.

So instead of seeing the time on the clock’s display, users could see their current bank balance or the number of Facebook friends they have.

All that is needed is a WiFi connection to customise features from a computer, phone or tablet.

The clock’s designers applied for backing for their idea on kickstarter.com, the crowdfunding website that appeals to individual backers to buy a stake in the idea.

Their pitch funding suggests to backers they can “reconnect with powerful motivating forces such as financial instability, social insecurity and fear of death”.

The clock is, its designers say: “A daily reminder that life is hard, deal with it.”

In their case, it might just have got easier.

With 18 days to go until the funding period ends, they have already raised more than double the $7,000 (£4,300) amount they set out to achieve.

First 3D-Printed Metal Gun Fired Successfully

The first metal gun made on a 3D printer has been unveiled with a video showing the firearm being successfully tested.

The gun comprises of more than 30 3D-printed components, including stainless steel and other metal parts.

In a blog, Californian engineering company Solid Concepts, said: “It functions beautifully. Our resident gun expert has fired 50 successful rounds and hit a few bull’s eyes at over 30 yards (metres).”

But the firm said making the classic 1911 pistol did not come cheap, requiring a lot more than a souped-up  desktop printer.

Vice President Kent Firestone said: “This isn’t about desktop printers … the industrial printer we used costs more than my college tuition and I went to a private university.”

Solid Concepts said its system is legal, claiming that they are the only 3D printing service provider with a Federal Firearms License.

The company said: “Now, if a qualifying customer needs a unique gun part in five days, we can deliver.

“We have the right materials, and the right engineers who know how to best programme and maintain these machines, to make 3D printing accurate, powerful and here to stay.”
The gun is made of 30 stainless steel and metal parts

The use of 3D printing technology to manufacture weapons is not new but making them out of metal is.

Earlier this year, computer files allowing someone to make a single-shot Liberator gun were downloaded more than 100,000 times from Defense Distributed, an open-source website dedicated to 3D printable gun components.

The State Department, which oversees US weapons exports, ordered the blueprints to be taken off the Internet in May, but by that point, users had already reposted them widely on various file-sharing sites.

Macmillan rebrands Nigeria at its Literary Night

All is now set for the 11th Macmillan Literary Night which comes up on the 14th November, 2013 at the Agip Recital Hall of the Muson Centre, Lagos.

This year’s Literary feast which commences at 6pm is themed “Fix it: The Nigerian Character” and according to the Executive Director Operations, Macmillan Nigeria Publishers Limited and Acting Chairman Macmillan Literary Events Committee, Mr Yinka Olaniyan, it is chosen to address the lingering perception of Nigerians as cheats, ritualists, dupes, drug traffickers and terrorists by nationals of other countries.

Mr Olaniyan lamented that a country that was conceived as giant of Africa has descended far down the ladder due to character deficiencies in some of her citizens stressing that “this is why the Macmillan Literary Events Committee with the usual backing of the Board and Management, has resolved to pay closer attention to the solutions instead of focusing on the Problems. We are well aware that factors like endemic corruption, violence, collapse of the family institutions, among others are partly responsible for the present bad image of the country.”

With the resolve not to bemoan the people’s fate any longer, Olaniyan noted that his organisation through the literary event, is calling on Nigerians , to re-cast themselves towards the desired change in character which entails that the average citizen of Nigeria plays a prominent role in order to move the country forward.

“Macmillan Nigeria Publishers wishes to use this event to make a clarion call to all citizens to be patriotic and imbibe the spirit of togetherness in building a great and prosperous country where every Nigerian can live with utmost dignity.”

A total of 18 items in the selected genres of Literature; Poetry, Prose and Drama that will be featured, will appeal to Nigerians’ sense of Patriotism. It is also expected that it will go beyond the appeal to highlight some practical result-oriented options in the organisation’s quest to re-build the country’s image in a positive light.

The dance drama will be performed by Crown Troupe of Africa led by Segun Adefila, Songs are to be rendered by Jumoke Oke, in the Poetry category, 8 poems will be rendered by 5 artists to include Theatre icons,Tina Mba, Joke Sylva, Nobert Young and, seasoned writer and international culturalist, Taiwo Ajayi, while Prose will be handled by the duo of Nobert Young and Taiwo Ajayi.

Issues to be highlighted during the night of entertainment and education will also, reflect on personality, fidelity, discipline, courage and responsibility. Odia Ofeimun will as usual, pilot the event.

Five-Year Jail Term For Exam Cheats Unfair — ICPC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission has faulted the five-year jail term proposed for examination fraudsters. It said the law was unfair to students, who were not provided with basic learning tools.

It blamed the spate of examination frauds in the country on infrastructural deficiency in the education sector.

The Chairman, ICPC, Ekpo Nta, in an interview with our correspondent, said more examination cheats were found in schools where there was shortage of human and material resources.

He criticized proprietors of schools, both government and private, saying educational institutions should meet standards or be shut down.

He said it was time stakeholders examined the structure, which had been promoting corruption. He added that once the system was corrected, the individuals would be corrected.

Nta said the last time students accused of exam malpractices were brought to the commission, he investigated their background and the schools they came from. He noted that record of exam malpractices was very low in ‘top’ schools, including public ones.

“It is very rare. Laboratories, libraries, computers, dormitories, dining halls and highly qualified teachers are in such schools. How will a child who has gone through such schools be involved in exam malpractices?

“By the time you begin to check those arrested for exam malpractices, they are from community schools, where there is a math teacher for the whole school; no science teacher. And then, you turn around to arrest a child who is a victim (of the inadequacies).

“If you prosecute such a child and jail them for five years, when you never gave them an opportunity, you will only make them toughened criminals when they are out. You didn’t give them a chance in the first instance, then, you jailed them in addition,” the ICPC boss observed.

President Goodluck Jonathan, through the immediate past Education Minister, Prof. Ruqquayat Rufa’i, had introduced a fine of N200, 000 or five-year jail term or both for examination cheats.

Rufa’i had tabled a memo before the Federal Executive Council, seeking approval for the enactment of an Act to amend the WAEC Act, CAP W4, Laws of 2004 to give effect to the revised convention of WAEC, 2003 in Nigeria.

The FEC had approved the amendment, with the office of the Attorney-General reportedly fine-tuning it, before it was taken to the National Assembly for passage.

BEWARE!! GRE, TOEFL Suspended Indefinitely In Nigeria

Nigerian students planning to write qualifying examinations into colleges and universities abroad should start seeking other alternatives as Education Testing Services, ETS, has suspended both the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) in Nigeria “due to security concerns.”

ETS is the world’s largest private nonprofit educational testing and assessment organization. It conducts examinations in almost all the countries of the world.
In a terse statement dated November 7, published on its website, ETS said both examinations have been suspended indefinitely in Nigeria.
“Due to security concerns in Nigeria, GRE® and TOEFL® testing in the country has been suspended for an indefinite period. Candidates who have appointments to take the TOEFL or GRE Tests will be contacted by ETS to process a refund.”
The organisation did not say the specific security threats it has come under. But the organisation may be acting proactively in the face of repeated attacks of educational institutions by suspected members of the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
The GRE is a standardized test that is required for admission for graduate (Post-graduate) courses in the United States and business programmes, especially Master in Business Administration (MBA) worldwide.
The TOEFL is a test meant to test the English Language proficiency of non-native English language speakers wishing to enroll in United States universities and other English speaking universities and courses around the world.
