POST UTME SURVIVAL: 28,000 candidates jostle for varsity’s 3,500 admission spaces

FUNAAB: Over 28,000 candidates on Wednesday began sitting for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for only 3,500 admission spaces into the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Last year over 22,000 candidates sat for the post-UTME examinations of the university.

The over 28,000 candidates for this year’s post-UTME have been divided into three batches by the university for the purpose of the examination whose conduct would last for three days.

FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, while monitoring the exercise, told newsmen that the increase in the number of candidates seeking admission into the university could be attributed to the confidence parents and candidates had in the institution.

Oyewole, who is also the president of the Association of African Universities, added that the stable academic calendar of FUNAAB could also be the major attraction to parents and admission seekers.

He said, “This year, we have 28,100 candidates sitting for this post-UTME examination. Really, it’s a reflection of the confidence of the parents and the candidates in the quality of education on offer in FUNAAB.

Why Mosquitoes Cannot Transmit HIV - Experts

Today, available statistics have shown that estimated 1.6 million people die of HIV&AIDS annually. In Nigeria alone, government reports claim that over 300,000 Nigerians die yearly of complications arising from AIDS.
If these estimated numbers die of HIV/AIDS, have you ever imagined what the situation will be like? Thank God, HIV doesn't have that ability. If mosquitoes spread HIV the way they spread malaria, millions of people will definitely lose their lives on daily basis, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria where mosquitoes are endemic.
Before now, there have been reports about concern of the possibility of mosquitoes transmitting AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) when the disease was first recognized and many people still feel that mosquitoes may be responsible for transmission of this infection from one individual to another.
However, Entomologists say that although mosquitoes function the same way as hypodermic needles - they can both inject chemicals and extract blood but cannot transmit HIV.
According to a former Navy Entomologist and Current Technical Advisor for the American Mosquito Control Association, Joe Conlon explains; "If mosquitoes carry West Nile Virus and other blood-borne diseases, shouldn't they logically be able to transmit HIV, too? It is definitely not a stupid question, but that is not the case. Mosquitoes can not transmit HIV.
Conlon reassured that first of all, when a mosquito bites you, it draws your blood into its gut. Acids there kill the HIV virus.
"Even if the mosquito's stomach acids did not render the virus harmless, it would not be able to get back out of the insect.
That is because mosquitoes use two different tubes to suck up blood and to inject you with saliva that stops your blood from clotting up while it's drinking. Even if a mosquito had virus-containing blood from another human inside it, the blood would never exit the bug through its salivary glands and into your blood stream.
"For a mosquito to transmit a disease, it must pick up the virus. The virus has to survive in the gut and then get outside the gut into the body cavity and then eventually into the salivary glands to be injected into something else. It is a very complicated process, and with HIV, it just doesn't happen," he explained.
Malaria parasites, on the other hand, are able to grow in the mosquito gut, then, migrate specifically to the salivary glands to continue their lifecycle in another human.
Reasons
Mosquitoes' mouth parts do not operate like a hypodermic needle. The tube which injects the host with saliva is separate from the canal which the mosquito uses to suck blood from the same host. Therefore blood only flows into the mosquito and only saliva is injected; blood is not flushed out of the same canal.
Insect-borne diseases like Encephalitis and malaria are spread because they multiply within the mosquito, these diseases then move into the insect's salivary glands and are injected into the host with the saliva. If a mosquito feeds on an HIV-positive person the virus cannot survive and replicate within the mosquito's gut as HIV requires specialist cells found only in humans in order to multiply.
HIV circulates in the blood at lower levels than malaria and other inset-borne diseases. The mosquito does not take enough units of HIV from the infected person to initiate infection.
Even if it was possible for the mosquito to inject HIV into an uninfected person, the person would have to be bitten by 10 million mosquitoes who had previously been feeding on an HIV positive host in order to receive one unit of HIV.

Usain Bolt to Retire after Rio Olympics

Jamaican world record holder in 100m and 200m, Usain Bolt, plans to retire after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics Games.

Bolt said Wednesday that he wants to win more gold in Rio, set another world record in the 200 metres next year, and perhaps win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

"So far, (it) is after the Olympics in Rio," Bolt said of his retirement plans. "I think if I am in great shape, I'll go there and do what I have to do. I think it will be a good time to retire, on top."

Winning another three gold medals in Moscow last month made him the most decorated athlete in world championship history with eight golds and two silvers. He has six gold medals from the Olympics.

"If I want to be among the greats of (Muhammad) Ali and Pele and all these guys I have to continue dominating until I retire," Bolt said ahead of his final race this season in the 100m at Friday's Van Damme Memorial in Brussels.

Bolt won the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and at last year's London Games. He won the same triple at the 2009 world championships before repeating that feat in Moscow last month.

Bob Marley’s Wife, Rita Cstorms lagos For Felabration 2013

Rita, the wife of late reggae musician, Bob Marley is set to visit Nigeria for the upcoming Felabration 2013 festival.

According to P.M News, Rita will be coming to Lagos, Nigeria as a special guest speaker at this year’s Felabration Symposium in October. She will be sharing her thoughts on the symposium topic: ‘Movement of The People: The Fela-Bob Marley Perspective.’

Mrs Marley gave her consent during a meeting in Ghana with Yeni Kuti, founder of the Felabration brand and Theo Lawson, Chairman, Felabration Organising Committee.

Remarkably both Fela and Bob Marley never shared a common stage throughout their playing lives despite the mutual respect they had for each other. They both popularised the theme “Movement of The People” in their various works. While Fela’s political party was called Movement Of The People, MOP, he also waxed a hit tune that goes by that same title.

Bob Marley on the other hand, also had a hit album titled Exodus: Movement of Jah People.

This year’s Felabration’s theme is aimed at rekindling the people-oriented messages these two iconic figures promoted in their days.

Meanwhile, one of Marley’s superstar sons has been billed as one of the surprise acts that will perform during this year’s week-long Felabration.

The reggae star has agreed with the Felabration organisers to break out of his current global tour to be at the festival as a mark of honour for the late Afrobeat legend.

He will be sharing the stage at some point during the Festival with Afro beat king Femi Kuti, and his younger brother, Seun alongside FELA’s Egypt ’80 Band.

This year’s Felabration will run through 14 and 20 October, beginning effectively with the symposium.

Nigeria Ranked Amongst World's Poorest Competitive Countries

Despite the efforts to diversify the economy and attract investors by the Jonathan administration, Nigeria is still ranked among the stragglers in the Global Competitive Index (GCI) 2013 -2014 released Wednesday by the World Economic Forum.
Nigeria dropped five places from last year's 115th position to 120th among the 148 countries profiled.
The GCI, which was introduced in 2004, measures how the set of institutions, policies, and other factors determine the level of productivity of a country. The GCI scores is calculated by drawing together the 12 pillars of competitiveness namely: institutions, infrastructure, macroeconomic environment, health and primary education, higher education and training, goods market efficiency, labour market efficiency, financial market development, technological readiness, market size, business sophistication and innovation.
According to the ranking, Nigeria is placed in the poorest pool of economic development possible. Nigeria ranked as a "factor driven" economy with the likes of Liberia, Lao, Mali and Yemen.
There are four stages of development with innovation-driven economies being the best pool of nations.
It worries the compilers of the index that Nigeria's economy is struggling to keep up despite overt advantages over other African countries. For instance, the report noted that Nigeria, due to its population, enjoys a large market size (32ndposition) "which has the potential for significant economies of scale and is an important factor for attracting investors."
It identifies weak institutions (ranked at 129th out of 148), engrained corruption, undue influence, weakly protected property rights, insecurity (ranked at 142nd), poor infrastructure (ranked at 135th) and poor primary education (ranked at 146th) as the reasons for the country's abysmal rating.
It also points to the overreliance on oil and the poor penetration of ICT as the other reasons for the country's poor showing.
Meanwhile Mauritius has overtaken South Africa as the most competitive country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ranked at 45th position the country moved up nine places this year, the country's enviable showing is bolstered by "transparent public institutions (ranked at 39th) with clear property rights and strong judicial independence and an efficient government (29th)," the report noted.
South Africa is ranked at 53rd position while Switzerland, ranked at number one is the most competitive country in the world.

WAEC Examination Malpractice: Defaulters to face 5-year Jail term or N200, 000 fine

Any student involved in examination malpractice during the senior school certificate examination may spend 5years in jail or pay a fine of N200,000, the federal government said on Wednesday.

The federal government took the decision at the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, after it approved an amendment to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Act.

While briefing journalists after the FEC meeting, the Minister of Education, Ruqayyat Rufai, said the approval is to give effect to the revised convention of WAEC, 2003 in Nigeria.

The Education Minister had tabled a memo before the Council seeking approval for the enactment of an Act to amend the WAEC Act, CAP W4, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004 to give effect to the revised convention of WAEC, 2003 in Nigeria.

The 2004 Act, which is to be amended, empowers the examination body to take disciplinary action and impose penalties against those involved in examination malpractices.

Section 19(1) of the Act states that “such candidate shall not take or be allowed to take or continue the examination, in addition, he shall be prohibited from taking any examination held or conducted by or on behalf of the Council for a period of two years immediately following upon such contraventions and if a candidate aforesaid has already taken any papers at the examination, his result there from shall be cancelled.”

A candidate found guilty after prosecution is “liable on conviction to a fine of N2,000 or imprisonment for a term of five years or to both such fine and imprisonment.”

Section 20 (2) reads: “the penalties contained in this sub-section (a) may be imposed whether or not a prosecution for an offence under section 20 or 21 of this Act has been brought or is being conducted or contemplated and (b) shall be in addition to such other penalties as a court may impose upon conviction for an offence under the aforesaid section 20 or 21.”

WAEC was established in 1952 following the acceptance of the Jeffery Report by the then colonial governments in Gold Coast (Ghana), Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia. Liberia later joined in 1974.

The FEC further directed the Ministry of Justice to take further necessary action on the subject.
