FG QUITS TALKS WITH FG

The negotiations between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government collapsed again yesterday as the lecturers have pulled out of the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led Committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities.

In a letter detailing its reasons for withdrawing from the committee, ASUU said that the committee had not made progress on the issues for which it was set up, adding it was not satisfied with the way the N100 billion raised by government to rehabilitate structures in the universities was being managed.

Worse still, ASUU in the letter dated August 26 and signed by its National President, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge, accused the Suswam committee of not being, clear on its plans for managing the funds. It cited the inclusion of a “Project Administration Fund,” even as it queried the manner which funds were allocated to universities slated to benefit from government’s intervention.

The letter stated that, “we have also noted albeit quizzically, that some N1.975 billion was allocated to the 62nd university called Project Admin Cost.

“We see no justification for allocating an amount more than what is allocated to four universities put together to a bogus Project Admin Cost”. The striking lecturers who had earlier announced their withdrawal from negotiations with the government, said that until the activities of the Suswam committee are carried out transparently and its misgivings on the modus operandi of the committee are addressed, ASUU will not return to the committee.

“In view of the foregoing, ASUU will be unable to continue in the membership of the committee until the issues raised are properly addressed”, Fagge stated.

Group To Give Scholarship Up To Varsity Level To Boy Who Hid In The Wheel Well Of Arik Air

Group volunteers to sponsor his education

Meantime, De Raufs, a volunteer group extolling the virtues of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Governor of Osun State, has volunteered to sponsor 15-year-old stowaway teenager, Daniel Oikhena, who hid in the tyre compartment of Arik Air flight from Benin to Lagos.

In a statement signed by the Director General of the group, Comrade Amitolu pootu, the group is ready to give scholarship to Daniel up to university level and help him realise his dream of travelling by air legitimately.

pootu said: “Genius and ambitious citizen of our country must not be suffocated on the alter of political and bureaucratic enforcement. The little boy’s ambition should be nurtured through qualitative education, and the group is ready to give the boy all the necessary support to make his dream a reality.

“We sincerely willing to offer him the scholarship to encourage thousands of teenagers who are cerebral and ambitious. The leaders in Nigeria fail on their part to see the potential of the little boy. Therefore, De Raufs takes up the responsibility to safe the future of this great boy and not turning him to criminal.”

Developers furious with Microsoft

Developers furious with Microsoft -

Software empire in decline, Microsoft, has angered developers by insisting on delaying the launch of Windows 8.1 until mid October.

Normally the Vole would have a "release to manufacturing" build of its software several weeks before the code reaches the great unwashed.

This early availability lets developers polish their work and testing so that their apps are available when the OS launches.

However, this is the new Microsoft, which has a reputation for messing up everything. The Vole has confirmed that although Windows 8.1 has reached the RTM milestone and been passed to computer- and tablet-making OEMs, subscribers to the Microsoft Developer Network will not get the final code until the public does on 17 October.

While the RTM system has worked really well for a couple of decades, Microsoft is now saying that it's much better to keep the unfinished code out of the hands of its partners.

After all, Apple would never let its code out before it was ready, and Microsoft is banking on copying Apple these days. Of course Apple code usually ships buggy and does not have the same amount of code available on the first day, but at least you have secrecy on your side.

Antoine Leblond, a Microsoft spokesperson, wrote in a blog that in the old days software was ready for broader customer use. "However, it's clear that times have changed." Apparently Microsoft does not want to repeat successful formulas any more.

Developers raged against the decision in comments on another Microsoft blog that told programmers to write and test their apps against Windows 8.1 Preview.

MIT students' shocking cure for Facebook addiction

Two MIT doctorates have worked out that the best way to solve Facebook addiction is shock treatment.

Robert Morris and Daniel McDuff have developed a device they call Pavlov Poke, named after Nobel Prize-winning Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov.

In his study of dogs, Pavlov found that a stimulus ringing a bell could be linked to a previously unrelated response, creating what's known as a conditioned reflex.

While Pavlov's cat experiments did not work, as the cat kept walking off, Morris and McDuff wanted to use Pavlov's technique to deter the use of Facebook.

The pair created an Arduino-based keyboard hand rest that shocks computer users who spend too much time checking the social network.

The device could be altered to punish over-reliance on Google or any other website. It could also be used to prevent kids from logging into sites they shouldn't.

In the UK David Cameron could use it to stop people finding out anything at all.

Morris said that the technique was too good. The shocks were so aversive, the researchers removed the device quickly after installing it.

NOT PROVEN: Drink eight glasses of water per day

It's the myth that just won't go away. Almost everyone thinks they don't drink enough water, but the idea that we all should drink lots of it – eight glasses per day – is based on no scientific data whatsoever.
No one really knows where the eight-glasses idea comes from. Some blame the bottled water industry but plenty of doctors and health organisations have also promoted it over the decades. The source might be a 1945 recommendation by the US National Research Council (NRC) that adults should consume 1 millilitre of water for each calorie of food, which adds up to about 2.5 litres per day for men and 2 litres for women.
According to Barbara Rolls, a nutrition researcher at Penn State University and author of the 1984 book Thirst, this amount is about right for people ...

Skype marks 10 years of shrinking the world

Skype was released in August 2003—written by a team of Estonian developers in Tallinn and, launched by two Scandinavian technology entrepreneurs, Niklas Zennstroem of Sweden and Janus Friis of Denmark, who expanded on existing peer-to-peer networking technologies
.
Skype isn't for humans only. At Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas, orangutans Mei and Mukah are rewarded for completing tasks by being allowed to communicate via Skype with orangutans in other zoos
.

The question many ask however is: Is it possible to make money on a business offering free calls? US software maker Microsoft thought so, paying $8.5 billion for Skype in 2011.
In the 12 months ended on June 30, Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, which includes Skype, reported operating income of $848 million, up from $380 million the year before.

periodic table: Swedish researchers discover new element

Swedish researchers discover new element

Researchers from Lund University in southern Sweden have discovered a new periodic element - the 115th on the periodic table - which is super heavy still nameless.

"This was a very successful experiment and is one of the most important in the field in recent years," Dirk Rudolph, Professor at the Division of Nuclear Physics at Lund University, said in a statement.

The element, which will take the atomic number 115, is as yet unnamed.

As well as observing the new element, the team gained access to data allowing a closer look into the structure and properties of super-heavy atomic nuclei.

The team was able to confirm the existence of the element by testing the energies of certain protons against the new element's alpha decay, energies that agreed with the expected energies for X-ray radiation. This allowed the physicists to get a "fingerprint" of the element.

The research was carried out in Germany and based on previous studies in Russia.

The find marks the second recent breakthrough for Swedish researches in the science field. In July, scientists in Uppsala, eastern Sweden, discovered "Upsalite", a newly created form of magnesium carbonate the team referred to as an "impossible" material.

"[Upsalite] is expected to pave the way for new sustainable products in a number of industrial applications," Maria Strømme, professor of nanotechnology, said in a statement at the time.

GUNMEN KILL 20 VIGILANTES IN BORNO

Insurgents suspected to be Boko Haram members killed 20 youths of the vigilante group populalry known as Civilian JTF in separate attacks in Bama and Damasak towns of Borno State.
A local official who attended a mass funeral for the victims in Bama on Monday said 14 vigilantes were killed there on Sunday, Reuters news agency reported.
A Daily Trust correspondent reported that in the Damasak incident, 6 vigilantes were killed yesterday.
The victims in the Damasak attack were identified as Ismail Alhaji Bunu, 36, Malam Goni, 27; Buzu Bukar, 27; Mohammed Modu, 20; Aliyu Jibrin,30 and Bukar Bako, 20.
Local vigilante groups run by youth volunteers have been instrumental in helping the military capture Boko Haram members, but they have also made them a target for the insurgents, drawing civilians further into the conflict.
Alhaji Baba Shehu Gulumba, chairman of Bama local council, told Reuters in Maiduguri that insurgents disguised as soldiers lured the youths into a trap.
“They were on guard duty when the sect members dressed in military camouflage came and told them that they were needed at a meeting nearby,” he said.
“When they had been lured away from their duty posts they were then attacked and killed.”

Aisha Haruna , 20, of Uke in Nasarawa State on Tuesday at a Grade 1 Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, maintained her divorce request.

Aisha had on May 29 filed a suit seeking separation from her husband, Hussaini Haruna, 27, of Gurku Village,

At the resumption of hearing, she told the court that she and her husband could not resolve the matter after the last adjourned date on Aug. 19.

The husband, who spoke through his counsel, Nuru Mua’zu, demanded Islamic procedure of divorce.

“This is an Islamic matter and there are procedures to follow before a wife is granted her wish for divorce.

“One of the procedures is that the woman has to pay what is known as ‘Kuli’.

“Kuli means, paying back some of the expenses the husband made in the course of marrying the wife.

“Though I don’t have the document here, but the total expenses is around N300,000,” Mua’zu said.

He told the court that Aisha was eight months pregnant for Haruna.

Mua’zu applied for adjournment to enable him bring the document containing the list of expenses.

The presiding judge, Mr Musa Danjuma, granted the counsel’s application and adjourned the case to Sept. 2 for continuation of hearing.

The wife had earlier told the court that her parents gave her out in marriage at the age of 13 without her consent.

The mother of one said that she stayed in the marriage for seven years, adding that she had lost interest in the marriage.

She said her loss of interest was on the ground that she was a child at that time the marriage was contracted. (NAN)

supreme court: Gov MIMIKO KNOWS FATE TOMORROW

The Supreme Court yesterday fixed Thursday August 29, for judgment in the appeals filed by both the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and its flag bearer, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu  and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Olusola Oke challenging the judgment of the Court of Appeal which upheld the victory of Governor Olusegun Mimiko in the Ondo state guber elections.
A full panel of the apex court headed by Justice Walter Onoghen also struck out the name of the second appellant in the first appeal, ACN having merged with other parties to form All Progressive Congress (APC).
The court fixed Thursday for judgment after listening to arguments of all parties in the two suits.
Counsel to Mimiko, Wole Olanipekun after announcing his appearance had urged the court to take judicial notice of the fact that the second appellant in the first appeal, ACN is no longer in existence as it has merged to form another party which he said was not before the court.
Counsel to Akeredolu, Wole Aina urged the court to refuse taking judicial notice that ACN is no longer in existence since there is no evidence before the court to prove this but on the alternative moved an application to substitute the name ACN for APC.
Counsel to Labour Party, Yusuf Ali SAN submitted that the court can take judicial notice of a notorious fact like that of the instant case adding that no one of school age will say he is not aware of the death of ACN as being merged into APC.
After listening to the submissions of all parties, the court stood the matter down for ruling.
In its ruling, the apex court held that it was the duty of the second appellant to inform the court of the merger of ACN into APC.

JONATHAN: ASUU STRIKE NO LONGER NECESSARY

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday repeated his call to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its eight-weeks old strike in the interest of Nigerians.
He made the appeal at the commissioning of some Federal government sponsored projects at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO).
Jonathan, who was represented by Minister of Education Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, said with the release of N30 billion to settle the lecturers’ demands, the strike was no longer necessary.
Jonathan said the earlier ASUU called off the strike the better. He urged the governing councils of universities to monitor the funds released for capital projects.
In his speech, Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Prof. Chigozie C.Asiabaka identified poor infrastructure as one of the challenges that confronted the school.
However, the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) ended in Owerri, Imo State with an appeal to the Federal Government to implement the 2009 agreement it reached with ASUU.
In a communiqué at the end of their meeting, read by the president Dr. Fatima Abudulramaan, the principals said the implementation of the agreement was necessary to return the university teachers to the classroom.
The body regretted the suffering the Nigerian children are made to bear in the face of the strike.
