CLEVER ATTACK:Boko Haram In Borno Ambush 40 Nigerian Troops, JTF Killed (NIGERIA)

40 Nigerian Troops Killed By Boko Haram Members In Latest Ambush Attack In Borno State; 65 Soldiers Missing
The attack occurred less than two months after 20 soldiers were killed by militants in the same area.

At least 40 Nigerian soldiers were killed and 65 others went missing in a deadly ambush by suspected members of the extremist group, Boko Haram, in the sect’s stronghold in Borno state, multiple defence sources have told PREMIUM TIMES.

Army authorities are miffed by the incident, and have ordered an investigation into the suspected operation blunder that gave the militants such an upper hand. The commanding officer of the unit that carried out the operation has now been removed from his post, officials say.

The casualty, one of the heaviest for the military in its campaign against the militant group in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, occurred along the Baga –Maiduguri road on Friday, September 13, in what our sources said was a classic case operational and communication failure.

A detachment of soldiers under the 134 Battalion of the 12 Brigade under the Multi National Joint Task Force, MNJTF, stationed in Kangarwa village in Kukawa local government, had conducted a reconnaissance to gather intelligence around the area, during which they established the presence of previously unnoticed Boko Haram camps.

The soldiers returned to their base and filed a report recommending aerial bombardment of the area, preparatory for a ground operation by troops, our sources, who declined to be named for security concerns, said.
But that plan was cancelled at the final minutes by an unnamed top official without formal communication to the more than 100 troops that had already advanced on the area.

“Due to lack of communication, the troop ran into the terrorists without knowing that the aerial bombardment had been cancelled and they were caught unawares,” one of our sources said.

The soldiers were trapped in the ambush under heavy fire from the militants who had surrounded the area, leaving at least 40 soldiers killed. Some 65 others have remained missing, our sources said.

The insurgents confiscated a huge cache of weapons from the soldiers after the attack.

As with past failures that ended in bloodshed and heavy casualty against the military, authorities have struggled to place a lid on the incident.

LMAO!! Brazil hackers mistake NASA for NSA in spying payback

Hackers have hit back in retaliation for US cyber-spying on Brazil but mistook the US space agency NASA for the National Security Agency (NSA), a news website reported here Tuesday.

"Some activists decided to protest this US practice but it seems that they picked the wrong target," a specialized blog of the Brazilian news portal Uol said.

"They hacked NASA's web page and left the message: Stop spying on us," it said.

The hackers' message also called on the United States not to attack Syria.

A NASA spokesman confirmed that a Brazilian hacker group last week posted a political message on a number of NASA websites.

"At no point were any of the agency's primary websites, missions or classified systems compromised," said NASA spokesman Allard Beutel.

"We are diligently taking action to investigate and reconstitute the websites impacted during web defacement incident," he said.

What a bottle of Coke Does To Your Body in 60 minutes

1) In the first 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor, allowing you to keep it down.

2) 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (And there’s plenty of that at this particular moment).

3) 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate; your blood pressure rises; as a response, your liver dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked, preventing drowsiness.

4) 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production, stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.

5) (a) 60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium, and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.

(b) 60 minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium, and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolytes, and water.

(c) 60 minutes: As the rave inside you dies down, you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like hydrating your system, or building strong bones and teeth.

This will all be followed by a caffeine crash in the next few hours. (As little as two if you’re a smoker) Want to know what happens after that? Check out what happens to your body after you drink a coke, every day for a long time.

Coke itself isn’t the enemy here. It’s the dynamic combo of massive sugar doses combined with caffeine and phosphoric acid, which are found in almost all sodas.

Engineers Devise Method To Turn Sewage Into Electricity

Using naturally-occurring “wired microbes” as mini power plants, a team of engineers at Stanford University devised a method to generate electricity from sewage. The findings, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), reveal that these mini power plants produce electricity as they digest plant and animal waste.

The team, comprised of Yi Cui, a materials scientist, Craig Criddle, an environmental engineer, and Xing Xie, an interdisciplinary fellow, calls their new device a microbial battery and hope that it will be used in places such as sewage treatment plants.

The device could also be useful to break down organic pollutants in the “dead zones” of lakes and coastal waters where fertilizer runoff and other organic waste can deplete oxygen levels and suffocate marine life.

Their laboratory prototype at the moment, however, is the size of a D-cell battery. It looks like a chemistry experiment with two electrodes – negative and positive – plunged into a bottle of wastewater filled with an unusual type of bacteria. The bacteria attach to the negative electrode, and their feasting on organic waste particles creates electricity that is captured by the positive electrode.

“We call it fishing for electrons,” said Criddle, a professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering.

The Case Of The Girl Who Couldn't Feel Pain

A team of European researchers finds the genetic mutation responsible for a subject's inability to feel pain.

"Index Subject 1"—the anonymous girl or woman who participated in this new study—is unusual in a couple of ways. For one thing, she cannot feel pain. It's a dangerous condition for her. Photos published in a paper about her show severe injuries to her head, face and knee, the latter of which she has fractured multiple times.

For another, she has a super-rare gene mutation, which the scientists couldn't find in any of the human genome databases they scoured. That gene mutation, the researchers think, is what protects Index Subject 1 from pain.

Index Subject 1's story is a cool bit of genetic sleuthing. It could also help her in the future: If a single mutation really is the root of most of her symptoms, then researchers could come up with a drug to target the specific protein her mutated gene makes. Her gene could also be a target for future painkillers for others' chronic pain. However, there's no immediate solution for her in this study, nor for the anonymous male the researchers later found who had the same mutation as she did.
Researchers compared Index Subject 1's genes with several human genome databases. They found just one genetic mutation that appeared in her, and nobody else.

Index Subject 1's research team—including scientists from Belgium, Sweden, and her home country, Germany—found her mutation by analyzing the genomes of both her and her parents. The researchers compared the family's genes with several human genome databases, such as "1,000 Genomes," which includes all the genes of 1,092 people from 14 populations. The scientists found a single genetic mutation that appeared in Index Subject 1, but nowhere else.

A Sip of Sea Water Could Treat Indigestion, Curb Cancer and Stomach Ulcers Risk

An ongoing clinical trial at the National Taiwan University Hospital is expected to clarify whether or not drinking sea water could prove beneficial to one's health.

Researchers working on this project say that, according to several previous investigations, it is likely that sea water could be used to treat indigestion. What's more, it could help reduce cancer and stomach ulcers risk.

The scientists detail that, as part of this clinical trial, they are asking a total of 60 volunteers to gulp down a glass of desalted deep-sea water four times a day, Daily Mail reports.

Three of these glasses are to be consumed about an hour before meals, whereas the fourth is to be drunk precisely before bedtime.

The goal is to figure out how sea water influences bacteria population inside the human stomach. Specifically, the researchers are looking to determine if this liquid can rid the stomach of bacteria known to the scientific community as Helicobacter pylori.

Apparently, these microorganisms are surprisingly common. Thus, they have been documented to infect about 4 in 10 people.

15% of the individuals who carry them inside their bodies sooner or later develop ulcers, most likely because the bacteria damage the stomach lining.

This bacteria-induced damage to the lining of the stomach is believed to also make people more likely to have trouble digesting their food and develop cancer at some point in their lives.

By the looks of it, experiments carried out on animals have shown that sea water can significantly reduce the number of Helicobacter pylori bacteria inside the stomach.

Odds are it owes this ability to the fact that it is rich in calcium, potassium and magnesium and other such minerals.

However, further investigations are needed before desalted deep-sea water can be recommended as a treatment for indigestion, and viewed as a means to reduce cancer and ulcers risk.

“This looks like fascinating work, and it is interesting that it reduces numbers of the bacteria. However, we don't know yet if the bacteria numbers increase when people stop drinking the water.”

“At this stage, we simply do not know how useful it will be. And one of the problems is that this water won't be regulated as a medicine so people will need to be wary of claims made for it,” specialist Dr. John Mason at the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wished to stress.

Arsenal Complete Two-Year Deal for Young Nigerian Defender

Former Charlton Athletic centre-back Semi Ajayi has revealed that he has joined Arsenal on a two year deal after suitably impressing the club's coaching staff.

The 19 year old left Charlton at the end of last season and had been training with Norwich City after accepting an offer of a trial with the Premier League club.

He made two appearances for Norwich's Under-21 side and scored one goal, leading to manager Chris Hughton deciding to offer the towering defender a six-month deal.

Ajayi decided against signing with the club and has now put pen to paper on a contract with Arsenal who will undoubtedly hope that they have discovered one for the future.

"Delighted to announce that I have officially signed for Arsenal ," Ajayi wrote on his Twitter page. "Can't wait to see what the next two seasons here have in store for me.

"It was sad to end my ten year spell with Charlton this summer but I can't speak highly enough of all of the wonderful people I met during my ten years there and I wish all those at Charlton the best for the future as I will always have a soft spot for the club and its fans."

ASUU STRIKE: MARK CALLS ON LECTURERS, FG TO RE-THINK

President of the Nigerian Senate, David Mark, has called on striking university lecturers to have a re-think as according to him, “the morass in the education sector is retarding the educational progress of millions of our children.”

Mark in his welcome message to the Senate after a six-week break said the case put forward by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) though justified, the university teachers should return to class, while pragmatic negotiations to address their grievances continue.

“I urge you all to spare a thought for the plight of our youths who are idling away because of the closure of our universities due to the ASUU strike. The morass in the education sector is deeply troubling not only because it is retarding the educational progress of millions of our children, but also because it arrests the intellectual development of our nation, with grave consequences for the future.”

Also Phyno’s Man of the year which has lyrics like “…oburu na okwero iba tee ya vaseline(if e no gree enter apply vaseline)…” was also considered explicit.

MICROSOFT GIVES BING A MAKEOVER LOGO

Microsoft Unveils New Bing Logo

Microsoft is giving its Bing search engine an overhaul to better compete with Google.
Like Yahoo earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled a redesigned logo for its search engine, along with a refreshed, modern homepage design. But Microsoft's changes go beyond the cosmetic by introducing new features and tweaking existing ones.
One of the keys to Microsoft's new approach is Page Zero, a new search function that aims to help users get a useful response to their query before they even see a traditional search results page. Building on to the traditional autofill suggestion that appears as users type their queries, Bing will also instantly provide relevant information and options for exploration as users input their query.
"For example, if you type Katy Perry, we understand what you're looking for before you've even searched and give you a quick glance of who she is and suggest other popular search tasks associated with the singer," Lawrence Ripsher, Microsoft's general manager of user experiences at Bing, explained late Monday in a company blog post detailing Bing's new features.

Twins Emerge With First Class At Redeemer’s Varsity

The bond shared by identical twins, Taiwo and Kehinde Babaagba, is strengthened as they graduate from the Redeemer’s University, Mowe, Ogun State, with First Class degrees.

Had twin sisters, Taiwo and Kehinde Babaagba, been born before the coming of the Scottish missionary, Mary Slessor, in the 19th century, they were very likely to have been killed at infancy. Reason: they would have been associated with ill omen and sacrificed to the gods.

Little wonder, the submissions of a visitor and an educationist, Dr. Ekanem Etuk, on the sidelines of the Redeemer’s University convocation, where the twins shone brilliantly like stars, aptly captured the place of Slessor in Nigerian history.

Etuk said, “Thank God for science and civilization that came to Africa. Without this opportunity for advancement, the twin sisters of the Babaagba family of Mopa, Kogi State, would have been forgotten in history some 20 years ago. They would have been tagged mysterious children and killed immediately after birth.

“Perhaps their parents would have been ostracized or killed for allegedly desecrating their community. Their own offence would have been that they gave birth to twins.”

But, thanks to social advancement, the two girls have today become a special gift to humanity. At the RUN convocation ceremony last Thursday, the 20-year-old twins did not only bag First Class each, one of them, Kehinde, emerged the overall best graduating student with a 4.96 Cumulative Grade Point Average in Computer Science. Her sister, Taiwo, obtained a First Class in Economics, scoring 4.57 CGPA.

With just four points off the five CGPA, it was therefore not surprising that Kehinde, the second best graduating student in the history of the eight-year-old university, received nine of the 27 convocation prizes. The Visitor, Vice Chancellor, College, Dean and the University Family Forum prizes were among the awards she won. There were 519 graduands in all.

EKSU Sacks Six Lecturers, Suspends 300 Students

The Vice-Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Prof. Oladipo Aina, has said that the institution has sacked six lecturers and rusticated 300 students for alleged intimate harassment and plagiarism, among others.

He spoke to our correspondent in Ado Ekiti, while stressing that his administration was committed to providing basic infrastructure in the school.

Aina said vices, comprising cultism, examination malpractice, take advantage of and forgery, among others, that portrayed the university in bad light would soon end.

Aina, who said there were no fewer than 25,000 part-time students when he assumed leadership of the university in 2011, said the majority of them belonged to different cult groups.

He linked their exposure to cult groups to lack of a busy schedule.

Aina said, “There were no fewer than 25,000 students in the part-time school when I came into office. The first thing I did was to stop the admission to the programme. We had to re-screen the students to distinguish the real from the fake ones.

“Again, many of them dropped out on their own.

“Now, we have less than 10,000 of them and those remaining are the genuine students. You cannot hear that cultists are disturbing here any longer.”

95-Year-Old Gay Man Marries 65-Year Old Partner

On Friday the 13th of September, a one of a kind gay wedding took place at a Senior home in San Diego, California.

In the event that marks the home’s first gay marriage, a 95-year-old World War 2 veteran named John Banvard married his gay lover, 67-year-old Gerard Nadeau.

The gay couple dated for 20 years before their wedding on Friday.

They couldn’t marry all this while because of gay marriage’s illegality in the state.

Recently the Supreme court made gay marriage legal in California.

The man-to-man wedding ceremony took place at their home with few friends in attendance. They sealed it with a kiss after exchanging vows. Those who kicked against their marriage simply did not attend.

‘It was something we wanted to do for a long time’, Mr Banvard said.

Many of the residents at the senior home were against their union.

They protested in a bid to stop it but the building management insisted the couple had a right to get married.

6 things women do that push men away...#true or false??

veecubed

1. Wanting a Man to Change

Many women get in a relationship thinking they can change the man. If a man makes a change for a relationship, the benefit must outweigh the consequences of that change. “I get it: You don’t want anything to make me as happy as you do. But if you’re willing to chase this result by eliminating everything else I might love from my life, then I don’t want you”, says Good.

2. An Overwrought Sense of Urgency

“Man Code” men liken romance to playing poker. “It’s better to conserve emotion for only the most meaningful circumstances,” Good says. While men pay attention to overall themes, women tend to sweat the small stuff. He wants women to know that ulterior motives are not a Man Code man thing to play at, if he’s out late with his friends, he’s just out late with his friends.

3. Séx on the First Date

Unfortunate but true, the “Man Code” man is chivalrous but also “red-blooded and carnal” like most guys. If a woman offers séx on the first, any man will probably take her up on that. A woman that can walk away with a goodnight kiss and leave the man guessing appeals much more to men. They like the thrill of a chase.

4. Talking Things to Death

According to Good, women need to think of love as “quiet.” In other words, it’s what you do when no one is looking, how you find their hand when things are bad and tell them it’s okay. If you hear “I love you” constantly it loses it’s value. “Love is the result of the events in our lives, not the result of talking about the idea of it,” assures Good.

5. Disloyalty

Loyalty is everything, it is the currency of our lives, declares Good. When women are disloyal to other women, it tells the man they will be disloyal to them, too.

6. A Failure to Let a Lion be a Lion

In the same way that a women wants to feel taken care of and protected, a man wants to know he’s the one that made her feel that way. Good explains, “With a look or word, you can empower us.”

culled: everywhere naija

There definitely some things you cannot change in your spouse, you have to love them for who they are. Others run away when they see your deficiency but it takes true love to sacrifice time to change your habits...........VEECUBED

The Federal Government on Monday met with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics behind closed doors and agreed to meet the demands of the union.

The Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, and the Labour Minister, Emeka Wogu co-chaired the meeting while ASUP President, Chibuzo Asomugha, led the union team.

None of the parties, however, spoke with journalists after the brief meeting held at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

However, a source at the meeting, who confided in our correspondent, said the union obtained a strong commitment from the government.

He said, “The union tabled three key issues at the meeting. One is the need to constitute the governing councils of the remaining seven polytechnics. Wike was said to have informed the union that the Federal Government had agreed to constitute the remaining governing councils. He promised that the list would be out by this week and the union was happy about it.

“He also promised that the white paper on the visitation panel to the polytechnics was almost ready and would be released soon.

It was a miscarriage – Arik Air says nobody gave birth on board

Arik Air has denied media reports that a woman delivered a baby on board its flight from Lagos.

The airline in a statement on Monday stated that the woman only suffered a miscarriage.

The statement signed by the company’s Public Relations and Communications Manager, Mr. Adebanji Ola, also stated that the woman in question was 12 weeks pregnant.

The statement said, “The Arik Air flight W3 101 which departed Lagos for London Heathrow on Sunday, diverted to Palma Mallorca Airport, Spain at 5:44pm due to an urgent medical attention for a 12-week pregnant woman on board.

“The passenger reportedly developed severe pain at the course of the flight. The pain later got complicated with bleeding, therefore miscarriage was suspected.

“The passenger, who was initially attended to by two medical doctors on board the flight, was 12 weeks pregnant. She was later transferred to a hospital in Mallorca for further medical attention. This is contrary to a report in some papers that the woman gave birth on board Arik flight to London.”

The statement explained that the pregnant woman did not disclose her pregnancy status to the airline’s Passenger Service Agents at check-in and because her pregnancy was 12 weeks, the team didn’t notice her status.

It added that the flight later departed Mallorca at 8pm for London Heathrow.

NOW OFFICIAL: BBM for Android to be released in few days time

There have been many mobile users of both the Android and iOS platforms eagerly awaiting the arrival of the BlackBerry Messenger service since it was announced that it was coming, and now finally it seems that the BBM for Android release has been finally revealed after some Samsung confusion.

We have heard that Samsung have been heavily promoting the upcoming BBM for Android app, and yesterday a tweet by the company’s Nigerian arm revealed that it will be released this coming Friday. It also suggested that the app would have a three month Android exclusive for the company which would anger the millions of Android fans that own other devices.

Luckily this is not the case though as CrackBerry reached out for conformation about this news and were told that the app would not be exclusive to any one manufacturer upon its release. The statement continued by saying the app will be arriving soon for both the Android and iOS platforms.

Previously BlackBerry executives stated the app will arrive this summer which officially ends on September 21st, so a release on Friday will just fit in with this. There has also been a thought that the iOS 7 public release will have to come before BBM is released simultaneously across the two mobile platforms.

There is a mystery BlackBerry event planned for tomorrow across three locations which could also be used to showcase the apps launch and to officially announce its arrival, but it now seems that those users that have long been waiting for BBM’s arrival only have a couple more days to wait to download the app for their device.
