Nokia launches Lumia 1020 in India

The price of the 41 megapixel camera phone will be disclosed on October 10 but is estimated to be in the range of Rs 47,000-Rs 48,000.

Targeting camera aficionados, Nokia India on Thursday unveiled its much-anticipated 41 megapixel camera phone Lumia 1020, which will hit shelves on October 11.

The price of the device will be disclosed on October 10 but as per estimates, it will be available in the range of Rs 47,000-Rs 48,000. It is currently selling in other markets for $800.

“We have received extremely encouraging response for our Lumia range and believe that Nokia 1020 will further strengthen our leadership in imaging, which plays a important role in the lives of consumers today,” Nokia India Managing Director P Balaji told reporters here.

The dual-capture feature of the phone allows users to take a high resolution 38 megapixel image and also creates a 5 megapixel picture that can be shared on social networking sites.

The device has an application called Nokia Pro Camera, which makes it easy for anybody to take professional quality images.

The application allows users to click pictures first and then zoom later to get their desired shot.

“It is our premium smartphone and our target market is people who value great imaging experience. There are 50 per cent people who click pictures with their smartphones and a fraction of those are camera lovers, who are our target audience for this phone,” Nokia India, Middle East and Africa Director (smartphone devices) Vipul Mehrotra said.

Lumia 1020 runs on Windows 8 and has 32 GB on board storage. The company has also tied up with Vodafone wherein the customers will get free 2GB of 3G data usage for two months. Customers will also get an application voucher worth Rs 1,000 with the phone.

MEDICAL STUDY: Without a trace- Cells keep to one direction by erasing the path

(PHOTO): A mass of migrating cells in the zebrafish embryo keep to one direction by vacuuming up the path behind them. Credit: EMBL/E. Donà

Migrating cells, it seems, cover their tracks not for fear of being followed, but to keep moving forward. Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, have now shown that cells in a zebrafish embryo determine which direction they move in by effectively erasing the path behind them. The findings, published online today in Nature, could have implications not just for development but also for cancer and metastasis.

As a zebrafish embryo develops, a group of cells migrate down the side of its body, leaving clumps of cells along the way. Those clumps will become ear-like organs, sensing vibrations in the water. In the adult fish, this is called the lateral line, so the moving mass in the embryo is dubbed the lateral line primordium. To migrate, these cells follow a trail of a molecule called a chemokine – but how do they know to keep moving in the same direction? Scientists assumed that the trail was a one-way path: a gradient where cells moved from less- to more-concentrated chemokine. But Darren Gilmour and colleagues at EMBL have now found that, rather than being produced outside them, that gradient is actually generated by the cells themselves.

"We found that the cells at the rear of the group have a 'vacuum cleaner'," says Erika Donà, who carried out the work. "They suck up the chemokine at the back, but at the front there's still a lot of chemokine to follow, so the cells move forward."

To investigate the role of the 'vacuum cleaner' molecule, Gilmour and Donà turned to a 'detector' molecule which all cells in the primordium use to sniff out the chemokine, and which the scientists labelled with a tag that goes from green to red as the detector ages.
Video 1: Zebrafish lateral line migration: painting by age.

Cells at the front of the primordium glowed green, showing they were in such frequent contact with the chemokine that their detectors were constantly being renewed, while cells at the rear encountered so little chemokine that their detectors had a chance to grow old, painting the cells red. To show that this gradient is created by the act of sucking up the chemokine, the scientists genetically engineered fish to have the vacuum cleaner molecule in an accompanying nerve rather than at the rear of the primordium itself. When the vacuum cleaner was switched to the nerve, the nerve went from following the migrating primordium to guiding it.

"It makes a lot of sense for the cells to choose their own direction," says Darren Gilmour, who led the work. "There's a lot going on in the embryo, lots of cells moving in lots of directions, so it may be very difficult to sustain a gradient. What we've shown is that you don't always need to."

The study could also be relevant to another, seemingly very different type of moving cells: those in metastasising cancers. Scientists have found that both the 'detector' and the 'vacuum cleaner' molecule play important roles in different tumours' ability to metastasise – to spread from one place to another in the body. These findings hint at what those roles might be, and consequently at possible ways to block them.

The colour-changing tag used in this study was first developed by Anton Khmelinskii in the group of EMBL Alumnus Michael Knop, now at the DKFZ-ZMBH Alliance. Joseph Barry in the Huber group helped develop and apply data analysis methods for this work.

Battery-powered aircraft e-Genius on cloud nine

The battery-powered electrical research aircraft e-Genius from the Institute for Aircraft Construction (IFB) at the University of Stuttgart was transported by air from the Kornwestheim/Pattonville airfield on the 560 km route to Straußberg at the beginning of September as a warm up for the Green Speed Cup competition. The e-Genius even set an initial world record on the first transit stop to recharge in Dessau: before this no battery-powered aircraft had ever achieved the feat of travelling a distance of 393 km. On the very first competition day of the Green Speed Cup, the e-Genius had to up its game once more with a daily task of 405 km. Yet the IFB pilots also successfully mastered this range and set the range record for battery-powered aircraft for a second time on 6th September 2013.

In the course of the competition, the conventionally motorised competitors stood no chance against the Stuttgart energy-saving miracle: with the same cruising speed the E-aircraft consumes only a fifth of the energy compared to conventional two-seaters. The e-Genius is still only a two-seater prototype, yet IFB professor Rudolf Voit-Nitschmann is hopeful that the research results in future can also be used for larger aircraft: "We are able to show with the e-Genius that the electrical drive in the aircraft works reliably, with minimum noise and with excellent energy efficiency. This will be significant for future aircraft, e.g. in feeder traffic that is mainly serviced by turboprop aircraft."

The electric aircraft e-Genius was designed and constructed under the leadership of Prof. Rudolf Voit-Nitschmann at the Institute for Aircraft Construction. The successful maiden flight was completed in May 2001. At present the e-Genius is the most efficient battery-powered aircraft worldwide, has a wingspan of 16.85 m, a take-off performance of 65 kW and approx. 900 kg take-off mass. The rechargeable power packs are able to store 56 kWh electrical energy, thereby contributing 300 kg to the take-off mass. The pilots completed the record distance with an average speed of 160 km/h and thereby required an energy equivalent of converted 1 litre for 100 km/h.

Researchers use Facebook data to predict users' age, gender and personality traits

(PHOTO:) Word clouds that compare the language that extraverts (top) and introverts (bottom) used in their status messages.

In the age of social media, people's inner lives are increasingly recorded through the language they use online. With this in mind, an interdisciplinary group of University of Pennsylvania researchers is interested in whether a computational analysis of this language can provide as much, or more, insight into their personalities as traditional methods used by psychologists, such as self-reported surveys and questionnaires.

In a recent study, published in the journalPLOS ONE, 75,000 people voluntarily completed a common personality questionnaire through a Facebook application and made their Facebook status updates available for research purposes. The researchers then looked for overall linguistic patterns in the volunteers' language.

Their analysis allowed them to generate computer models that were able to predict the individuals' age, gender and their responses on the personality questionnaires they took. These prediction models were surprisingly accurate. For example, the researchers were correct 92 percent of the time when predicting users' gender based only on the la
nguage of their status updates.

The success of this "open" approach suggests new ways of researching connections between personality traits and behaviors and measuring the effectiveness ofpsychological interventions.

Nigerian Dies Aboard United Airlines Flight to U.S

The management of United Airlines has confirmed the death of a Nigerian, Mr. Benedict Sylvester Igwedike, 67, while aboard Flight 143 to Houston, United States of America.

The incident, which occurred on Monday night, took place after the aircraft had just finished refuelling at Dakar, the Senegalese capital. The plane had taken off from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

But the bad news may have been delayed from reaching the family of the deceased as the airline said it had just contacted his family Wednesday.

A statement from the airline's headquarters in Houston yesterday said: "Medical personnel in Houston met United flight 143 from Lagos, Nigeria upon arrival Monday due to a deceased passenger on board. We are assisting the passenger's family with their needs."

On landing at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport early on Tuesday morning, the body was taken for autopsy. United Airlines office in Lagos was mum over the incident but a terse statement from the headquarters had confirmed the death.

Reports from the US said Houston Police Department (HPD) confirmed that Igwedike died en route to Houston from Lagos and that the deceased was found dead in the plane, so the body was taken out of the aircraft for autopsy.

Attackers kill pastor and burn church in Nigeria

Police say suspected Islamic militants armed with automatic rifles and explosives killed a pastor and his son and torched a church in northeast Nigeria before dawn.

Corporal Musa Ibrahim said the attackers also killed the village head at Dorawa, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Yobe state school where extremists in July killed 29 students, some burned alive.

Ibrahim said gunmen used explosives to set ablaze the church and five homes.

Yobe is one of three northeastern states under a military emergency to try to halt an Islamic uprising by militants who have killed more than 1,700 people since 2010 in their quest to turn Nigeria into an Islamic state and ban Western education though the country of 160 million people has as many Christians as Muslims.

Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) gives FG 60 days Ultimatum

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has given the Federal Government a 60-day ultimatum to meet its demands. The President of the Union, Mr. Asagha Okoro, said “the nation would regret looking down on the teaching education sector if concrete steps are not taken to address COEASU’s grievances.”

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard Learning, Okoro said: “we have packaged all the issues facing the teaching education sector. If we do not see concrete action within 60 days, we will employ non conventional industrial methods to make our voice heard. What we are asking for is not much; most of these demands can be met with as little as N26bn. After a one week warning strike, the Union met with government representatives at the office of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, last Thursday.

Outome of meeting

Okoro, speaking on the outcome of the meeting said: “We were told that our concerns were germane and will be addressed. However, the issues discussed were forwarded to the Minister of State for Education and we were told that a meeting would be scheduled with him as soon as possible.”

The union had pointed out 17 issues to be addressed by the government. They include: “the suspicious delay in the release of the 2012 visitation white paper; the refusal of colleges managements to recruit commensurate academic manpower to cater for the high dearth of academic staff to meet the contemporary challenges engendered by the rising population of students; the non-harmonization of conditions of service for academic staff of all tertiary institutions to stem brain drain from the colleges of education to the universities; the proposed selective imposition of IPPIS in the CoE and the polytechnics; the truncation of a hitherto functional and innovative Tertiary Education Trust Fund leading to obvious regrettable gaps that compromises the critical need for the consolidation of the gains recorded during the past five years; non implementation of CONPCASS, 65years retirement age and Migration to CONTISS 15 in some state CoE; the non conduct of Needs Assessment for CoE to address students and staff needs for the enhancement of quality teaching and learning.”

Others are: the refusal of government to approve an Independent degree awarding status for all CoE certified by NUC as being qualified to award degrees in Teacher Education; illegal imposition of Group Life Insurance underwriters and the non payment of death benefits to our deceased colleague’s families between 2000 and 2013; non budgetary allocations for outsourced services and the refusal of government to heed the call for the abrogation of outsourced services and the offer of regular employment to all those in the outsourced cadre and the payment of out-standing arrears to the tune of N2,443,278,543.96; the non allocation/release of funds (N2,344,765,841) for crucial academic activities like accreditation programmes, among others.

Meanwhile, in its bid to forestall another strike action by COEASU, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Wogu, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with COEASU which charged the Federal Ministry of Education to, as a matter of urgency, meet with the Union to determine some of the issues at stake.

At the end of the Thursday meeting aimed at reassessing the extent of the implementation of the agreement reached on the 30th of August 2013 between the Ministry of Education and COEASU, the MoU states that all new issues tabled at the mediatory meeting will also be sent to the Supervising Minister of Education as they are specific administrative issues within the Sector which require tackling;

That the Federal Government appreciates the suspension of the seven days working strike embarked upon by the Union due to the intervention of the Federal Ministries of Labour and Productivity and Education on 30th August 2013;

That the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation will demonstrate the workings of the IPPIS platform to the Executive of COEASU on October 29,2013;

That in consideration of the above conciliatory meeting which is at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, the meeting shall reconvene after 60 days to consider progress made in respect of the outstanding issues now referred back to the Federal Ministry of Education.

Why is beeswax perfect for candles?

Beeswax is solid at room temperature but melts easily and burns slowly, producing very little smoke and emitting a sweet smell. These qualities make it ideal for candle-making although whether or not it is the best material remains subjective. Early candles were made from tallow, processe from animal fat. Tallow candles smelled unpleasant and burned quickly, so beeswax offered big benefits over these. Nowadays, there are many alternatives to beeswax. Most candles are made from paraffin wax, which is odourless, clean and cheap, but other materials such as soybean wax are also popular.

WONDERS WILL NEVER END!! "Crippled Man" Rapes "Able-bodied' Bread Seller In Lagos

Crippled Man Jailed In Kirikiri Prison For Raping A Bread Seller In Lagos

greaterheights

This story is a bit unbelievable, how can a crippled man without legs rape an able-bodied woman?

According to PM news, Kundus Kazeem has been arrested for allegedly raping a 19-year-old bread seller at his home in Ajegunle area of Lagos.

Kazeem who claims he had a fee agreement with the bread seller has been charged charged before an Apapa Magistrate’s court. He is now facing a two-count charge of felony and rape under the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

The suspect allegedly lured the victim into his one room apartment at Cemetery Road, Ajegunle and with the aid of a walking stick, forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

The 29-year old Kazeem who admitted that women reject him because of his physical condition, said nothing was wrong him except his two legs.

He also claimed he had sex with her after they agreed on a fee and regretted that he was not able to meet the initial condition she gave him.

Kazeem told P.M .NEWS that he did not rape the teenager as she claimed.

He said before they went to his room, they agreed that he will pay N1,000 for the act and that he used part of the money he had on him to entertain her by buying drinks for her and himself, after which he gave her N400.

He said she became angry and went and told her parents that he raped her.

Contrary to his claim of bargaining with her, P.M.NEWS gathered that Kazeem asked the victim to come to his room and sell bread to him.

She did not suspect anything and took the bread to him and when she entered his room, he locked his door and threw her on his bed and used his walking stick to tie her hands, tore her pant and raped her.

The victim went home and told her parents what happened and the matter was reported to the police and he was arrested and charged to court for the alleged offence.

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty. The presiding Magistrate, Mr M.K.O. Fadeyi granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.

The matter was adjourned till 6 December 2013 for mention.
