FOUR FUTA STUDENTS TO COMPLETE PROGRAMMES IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITY

The collaboration between the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, and the Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University (FAMU), Tallahassee, USA has translated into reality with the departure of the first set of students for the United States of America.
The students who are to complete their undergraduate programme at FAMU under the 4-1-1 programme are Oluwalowo Abiodun (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering), Ogundana Ifedayo Joseph (Electrical/Electronic Engineering) and Ebere Onyewuchi Emmanuel (Mechanical Engineering), while Fasakin Tolulope is to pursue a Master degree in Industrial Engineering.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Ebere Onyewuchi Emmanuel gave glory to God for counting him and others worthy to be among the first beneficiaries of the programme. He said, “I believe our going is for good and we promise God and FUTA management that we will not disappoint.

Professor Daramola, the initiator of the collaboration said its primary aim is to develop academic and research cooperative efforts between the two institutions through which staff and students will enjoy opportunities to enhance their teaching, research and learning activities. He said it would also engender exchange programmes on short, medium and long-term basis as a means of promoting scientific and scholarly research output for the benefit of both institutions.
Present at the send forth were: Dr. Kayode Oke (HOD Mechanical Engineering), Dr. Joseph Omotoyinbo (HOD, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering), Dr. Lanre Ogunti (HOD, Electrical/Electronic Engineering) and Mr. Adeyemo of the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics).

Electronic cigarettes growing in popularity with teens

Use of e-cigarettes among middle- and high school students doubled between 2011 and 2012. Health authorities worry that young people who use them, like 19-year-old Brian Jung, will wind up hooked on regular cigarettes.

One out of 10 American high school students used electronic cigarettes in 2012, along with nearly 3% of middle school students, according to a new federal report. That's about double the rate of e-cigarette use in 2011 and translates into 1.78 million children and teens who have tried the battery-powered devices.

The sharp increase has public health experts worried. Electronic cigarettes contain the addictive chemical nicotine and traces of cancer-causing compounds called nitrosamines. The safety profile of the devices has not been fully studied, according to warnings from the Food and Drug Administration.

In addition, e-cigarettes are sold with cartridges that give them enticing flavors such as mint or chocolate, and health advocates fear they have the potential to turn teens on to regular cigarettes.

"The increased use of e-cigarettes by teens is deeply troubling," Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a statement. "Many teens who start with e-cigarettes may be condemned to struggling with a lifelong addiction to nicotine and conventional cigarettes."

Jigawa State Hisbah Command has arrested 21 commercial sex workers, as part of efforts to stop them from operating in the state.

The commandant of Hisbah in the state, Alhaji Aliyu Galamawa, who disclosed this to newsmen in Dutse, said the arrest followed a security report that they had invaded different parts of the state after they were dislodged from neighbouring Bauchi, Kano and Lagos states.
The commercial sex workers were said to have divided themselves to various towns and villages such as Ringim, Chaichai and Dutse.
Galamawa explained that men of the command arrested 21 of them in Ringim and Dutse with their traditional musicians, while some were arrested in Chaichai town with the owner of the house who gave them rent.
According to him, they were handed over to the state police command, which charged them before a Sharia Court sitting in Dutse under Magistrate Aliyu Hadejia.

STUDENTS SELLING THEIR SPERM IN LAGOS for 50k

Indeed, investigation by PUNCH showed that spérm has become a commodity in high demand in Lagos. The Chief Consultant and Head, Obstetrician and Fertility Department, Eko Hospitals, Dr. Adegbite Ogunmokun, said fertility problem, based on recent experience, had tilted more towards the male factor.
He said, “If 10 couples come in, there will be problem with the male in six of them, using our parameter of 20 million spérm per millimetre. But 10 to 15 years ago, maybe about four out of 10 men would have problem.”
PUNCH correspondents, who visited some fertility centres in Lagos, learnt that more men are having low spérm count, thus necessitating the need for more volunteer donors. But because donors are scare, fertility clinics offer as much as N50,000 to men who are interested in selling their spérm.
They also pay more when sellers have special features that the beneficiaries are looking for.
Like blood sellers, investigations show that many people in Lagos, especially students, now sell their spérms anytime they need money.
A student of the University of Lagos, who identified himself as John, said he had sold spérm to a few fertility centres in Lagos. John said he had been funding his education for the past two years with what he earned from selling his spérm.
John said he was introduced to the programme by a friend and that he had in turn brought in two other friends to ‘business’.
“I’ve sold to a number of fertility centres. The money has really helped me to stay in school. It takes care of my tuition and some other personal needs,” John said, with a measure of satisfaction.
“It’s cool money, really and I’m also doing a service to mankind by helping out some people in need. Even friends that I introduced to it have not turned back since then.”
An employee in a Lagos fertility clinic, who identified himself as Olufunsho, told PUNCH that some women would pay any amount to get a spérm seller with the features they want.
He said, “We pay N50,000 here but there are times when women come in and request that, at all cost, they must get a tall man. The person can earn more when they make such requests, especially if we don’t have any that fits the profile in our bank.

FEAR SYNDRONE: 13 of the most unusual phobias

Sufferers of xanthophobia may fear anything yellow, including the sun, daffodils and yellow paint. In its most aggressive form xanthophobic symptoms may include an overwhelming fear of even the phrase yellow.

2) Turophobia- fear of cheese

Sufferers of Turophobia usually associate cheese with a traumatic memory. From cheddar to mozzarella turophobes often have to run away if they so much as see a slice of cheese. Some may fear one type of cheese while others may fear cheese altogether.

3) Somniphobia- fear of falling asleep

Somniphobia comprises often irrational and excessive fear of sleep. Somniphobes may fear falling asleep because they associate going to bed with dying. It may also result from a feeling of lack of control or from suffering repeated nightmares. Somniphobics may also fear losing time while sleeping.

4) Coulrophobia – fear of clowns

Coulrophobia is a relatively common phobia, and usually present in children according to various surveys. The 'scary clown' has often been used in popular culture, for example in the form of the Joker in Batman comics and film adaptations. Coulrophobia has some celebrity sufferers- namely Daniel Radcliffe and Johnny Depp. Depp said of his clown fear: "it’s impossible, thanks to their painted-on smiles, to distinguish if they are happy or if they are about to bite your face off."

5) Hylophobia- fear of trees

Hylophobia involves an irrational fear of wood, forest, or trees. It is often caused by exposure to films and fairy tales which involve scary woods in childhood. Many sufferers don't grow out of the phobia and any walk in a scenic setting can trigger anxiety. Hylophobes suffer extreme anxiety when they simply think about a wood.

6) Omphalophobia- fear of the navel

Omphalophobia is the fear of bullybuttons. Sufferers are afraid to have their bellybuttons touched, or to touch another person's belly button. The fear is often linked with the belly button's association to the umbilical cord and a mother's womb. Omphalophobes can be repulsed just by seeing or thinking about a belly button

7) Nomophobia- fear of being without mobile phone coverage

The name for the phobia of being without mobile phone coverage was coined five years ago after researchers discovered the phenomenon. According to recent surveys, more than half of people in the UK suffer from it. The phobia is brought on by the fear of losing signal, running out of battery or even losing sight of a mobile phone.

8) Ombrophobia- fear of rain

Ombrophobes have an abnormal fear of rain which can cause severe anxiety attacks. It is thought to be triggered by a number of factors, including the fact that children are often told not to go out in the rain because it will make them ill. Rain is also often associated with depression.

9) Papaphobia- fear of the pope

The fear of the pope or the papacy is uncommon. It is closely related to Hierophobia (the fear of holy individuals or sacred things). It is also related to hagiophobia which is an exaggerated or irrational fear or dislike of saints and holy things. The fear is often triggered by a trauma associated with the pope.

10) Uranophobia- fear of heaven

Sufferers of uranophobia fear the sky and the afterlife. It can be triggered in religious believers who fear the idea that they will be judged after life.

11) Pogonophobia- fear of beards

The term pogonophobia has been used since the 1850s to describe a strong fear of beards. Earlier this month presenter Jeremy Paxman accused the BBC of suffering from pogonophobia after he was criticised for presenting Newsnight with a beard.

12) Trypophobia- fear of holes

Sufferers of trypophobia fear objects with small holes. It is not yet considered an official phobia, although thousands of people are reported to suffer from it. According to new research trypophobics associate holes with danger. Examples of feared objects include honeycomb, sponges and any plant with small holes in it. Symptoms of Trypophobia range from nausea and itchy skin to full blown panic attacks.

13) Triskaidekaphobia- fear of the number 13

Many people are superstitious about the number 13 but few have a fully fledged phobia. It is closely associated with the fear of Friday 13. Sufferers take great care to avoid using, or doing anything related to the number.
