No Law, Medicine and Med Lab for AAU Direct Entry Candidates 2013/2014

Information gathered has said there would be no admission into Law, Medicine & Surgery and Medical Lab via Direct Entry in the Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma this year.

Prospective candidates of the listed course under the direct entry category are therefore expected to request for "switch of course" within the school.

Further inquiries or clarifications on this should be directed to the university admissions office. 

UNILORIN expels five students for alleged acts of misconducts

The University of Ilorin has expelled five students from the institution for alleged acts of misconduct.

The Disciplinary Committee of the institution said after due consideration of all evidence before it, it was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the allegation of misconduct was established against the students. Vice-Chancellor, UNILORIN, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, in an interview with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, confirmed the expulsion of the students. 

He added that before any student could graduate, such must have been found worthy in learning and character. According to him, students are being monitored from their first day on the campus till the last day. Besides, he said the university believed in upholding the rule of law. 

He said, "We have various committees put in place to checkmate excesses either of the students or of the staff. We have rules and regulations guiding the conducts of staff and students on campus."

Islamic law sanctions marriage based on maturity not age – Ahmad Sani

SENATOR Ahmad Rufai Sani, ANPP, Zamfara West Wednesday said that under the Islamic law, a girl was considered ripe for marriage based on her physical and mental maturity and not necessarily age, just as he stressed that situations could arise where a very big girl was ready for marriage at age 14, 15, 16 as obtained in other countries.

According to him, the 1999 Constitution does not in any way provide for any specific age when a girl could be married, but was quick to add that the same constitution stipulates that any girl aspiring to be married must attain a full age.

Speaking Wednesday in an interview on the ‘Kakaaki’ aired programme by the African Independent Television (AIT), Senator Ahmad Sani who denied backing the child marriages during the clause by clause voting on the report of the Senator Ike Ekweremadu led Constitution review, said insinuations that he supported child marriage during the exercise were untrue, misleading and however attributed that entire criticisms to what he termed, the handiwork of mischief-makers.

Hon. Chidi Llyod to remain in detention till August 6th

Following what was described as a confused atmosphere at a Rivers State High Court when the Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Chidi Llyod was arraigned Wednesday, by the Police. Authorities told Vanguard that Mr. Lloyd will remain in detention until August 6th.

The decision to take back the house leader Vanguard gathered, stems from the fact that since the presiding Judge in the case of attempted murder and five other counts preferred against Llyod was stopped from hearing the case by the State’s Attorney General, the status-quo will remain the same.

“The case of attempted murder and other counts preferred against Mr. Lloyd are criminal in nature and since there was no hearing as a result of the AG’s intervention, the Police have no alternative than to take back the suspect to detention until August 6 that it was adjourned to”.

ASUU STRIKE( latest news): Bear with us, FG tells students, parents

The Federal Government has expressed admitted worry at the distortion in school calendar as a result of the on going strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities saying that it is committed to the speedy resolution of the crisis for the sake of Nigerian students.

Minister of Information, Labaran Maku told state House correspondents at the end of  Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting that government was committed to “serious negotiations” with the university lecturers.

The Minister appealed to the students and parents to bear with government and show more understanding as efforts are being made to resolve the contending issues very soon.

“The federal government has been far more worried than you think concerning the strike in tertiary institutions, because of the disruption of the school calendar and so government is concerned and very worried and since the onset of the strike government has been negotiating with ASUU through the Ministry of Labour and Productivity and the Ministry of Education.

“As at today we know that this negotiations are going on and it is our expectation that this strike will not get more protracted and that an understanding will be reached soon enough to enable our students return back to school. Government is very worried and concerned every time the school calendar is disrupted, it has its cost to the nation, particularly the idle time our children spend at home can lead to alot of social difficulties.

President Jonathan convoy in auto crash in Nasarawa 6 policemen, 8 others injured

THE convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan, was on Monday, involved in an auto crash, leaving 14 persons injured.

Witnesses confided in the Nigerian Tribune that three confessional policemen, three mobile policemen, one member of the civil defence corps, as well as one official of the state branch of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and six civilians were seriously injured, and were currently receiving treatment at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Shehu, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, said the state government had since released funds for the treatment of all the victims. He said some of the victims have been discharged but those who have serious fracture were still at the hospital.

According to him, the accident happened when the vehicle of a prison officer ran into the convoy of the president and collided with one of the riders, who somersaulted and thereafter ran into the crowd.

“They are all responding to treatment at the hospital. Some have fractures on their legs. The prison officer sustained minor injury. He is still in police custody while investigation is ongoing,” he said.

It will be recalled that the president was in Lafia for the inauguration of the newly constructed Federal High Court and Ta’al Model School constructed by the present administration in the state. He was represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo.

Akpom strikes again for Gunners

Nigerian-born Arsenal starlet, Chuba Akpom continued to prove himself as an invaluable asset to the Gunners with a goal in Tuesday’s 4-4 draw against League one club, Leyton Orient.

Akpom impressed in the thoroughly entertaining friendly game at the Matchroom stadium as he scored in the 53rd minute to help the London club claw back a two goal deficit to claim a share of the spoils.

Bayern boss Uli Hoeness charged in tax evasion

 Information provided by the Canadian Press states German prosecutors charged Hoeness after he previously reported an undeclared Swiss bank account. Bayern backed him throughout the investigation, and now he has one month to respond.

Munich prosecutors' spokesman Ken Heidenreich said Tuesday that Hoeness' lawyers have one month to respond to the charges, and a Munich court will decide whether the case goes to trial. He wouldn't say how long that decision might take.

The report goes on to say Hoeness offered to step aside temporarily while the situation played itself out, but the club's board confirmed it wanted him to stay. He watched over a squad that was able to capture a historic treble last season.
