Mother and Daughter Sentenced to Prison for Running Million-Dollar Dating Scam

63-year-old Karen Vasseur and her 42-year-old daughter Tracy Vasseur, both from Brighton, Colorado, have been sentenced to prison for running what authorities call a “Nigerian Internet romance scam.”

According to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, the two women tricked 375 individuals from the United States and 40 other countries into sending them a total of over $1 million (€760,000).

Court documents detail how the two managed to defraud some of their victims of tens of thousands of dollars.

Tracy Vasseur has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and five years parole. In addition, she was sentenced to another 4 years with 3 years of parole for committing other crimes while on bond from the scam case.

The second sentence will be run consecutively to the first, so she’ll spend a total of 19 years behind bars.

Her mother, on the other hand, was sentenced to 12 years and 5 years parole. This sentence will run concurrent to another 10-year sentence she received for stealing from at-risk adults.

Karen Vasseur tricked her victims into believing that she had inherited millions of dollars from a military friend in Nigeria. She promised them unsecured loans if they would pay her an upfront fee.

All 25,000 candidates for Liberia University Screening Exam failed

Liberia’s main public university said on Wednesday all 25,000 applicants for the new academic year had failed its entrance exam, prompting the president to describe poor education standards in the impoverished nation as a “national emergency”.

The University of Liberia, which educates more than half of the country’s students in the capital Monrovia, said it had been forced to admit 1,600 failed candidates for the new term which begins next month.

“None of the 25,000 students who sat the test (obtained) the required points,” said university vice-president Ansu Sonii.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf made an impromptu call at the university to discuss the failure, her office said in a statement, which described the situation as “alarming” and confirmation of a recent statement by the president that “the educational system is a mess”.

“Why are the students of the system not performing to the standards expected? Why are they not comparative with those in other countries?” Sirleaf demanded as she met university authorities on Tuesday, according to the statement.

The president urged the country to see the poor performance of the candidates as a “national emergency”, the statement added, and called on “all Liberians, irrespective of political background” to tackle the issue of dire standards in schools.

ASUU Strike - NANS, NUSA Appeal to ASUU to Accept FG's Offer

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Nigerian University Students' Association (NUSA) in Zone "C" has appealed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to accept the offer made by the Federal Government to them.
In a joint statement signed by Speaker of NUSA, Comrade Shu'aibu Mohammed and the NANS coordinator Zone C, Comrade Adio Friday after a protest match in Lafia, Nasarawa State, urged ASUU to accept the offer made by the government and return to classroom while negotiation continues saying that it would be for the interest of the students.
The student's organisations said they implore ASUU to device a means of resolving their demands with the government rather than embarking on a nationwide strike that is more detrimental to the students who are at the receiving end.
According to the statement, they appealed to the government to consolidate on the progress made saying that government shouldn't have waited until the strike degenerated to this extent.

Dead Whale - Alpha Beach Turns Tourist Site

Following the washing ashore of a dead whale at Alpha beach in Lagos, the place has now become a tourist site as thousands of Lagosians flocked the beach yesterday.
LEADERSHIP gathered that while some Lagosians went to catch a glimpse of the dead fish, others headed for the beach to partake in the sharing of the free meat.
Young boys with cutlasses, axes and buckets have been flocking the beach to take home parts of the carcass.
The influx of Lagosians to the area has also led to an increase in Okada fare from Ibeju Lekki junction to the beach, which has risen from N300 to N500.
A motorcyclist, Ibrahim Musa, told LEADERSHIP that many people had been visiting the beach to catch a glimpse of the whale and this necessitated an increase in transport fare to the beach.
No health official or local government officials have visited the area to take charge of the situation.

$13 phone : dual SIM, FM radio, and lots of specs added (see photos)

This dual band $13.04 mobile phone will work in just about every country in the world except the USA, and comes with a 1.8 inch color screen, FM radio, camera, MP3 and MP4 playback, Bluetooth and a flashlight. Amazingly it will also hold up to 32GB of data on a microSD card, which probably equates to gazillion photos at less than 2 megapixels.

What we find amazing is the fact that they can build something like this, sell them in single units and still make a profit. If this is the sort of product you can put together in this price band, how much profit are the other phone manufacturers making out of us every time we buy something a little – OK a lot – more sophisticated?

It wasn’t that long ago that they were selling plain old MP3 players at this kind of money, which is really sort of strange, don’t you think? Oh and yes, it’s got a ‘super big speaker‘.

OSPOLY: Female Student-19-Year Old Redesigned Boyfriend With Hot Water

19-year-old female student of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, simply identified as Yetunde, is cooling off in the custody of the state Police command, Osogbo, for allegedly pouring hot water on her boyfriend, Niyi Adelana.

All because Niyi her boyfriend had invited other girls and failed to give her adequate attention during his birthday party.

Reports say Niyi celebrated his birthday last Saturday and had invited some of his friends mostly ladies to his birthday party, a situation that did not go down well with his girlfriend, Yetunde.
However, when the party ended, Niyi made attempts to pacify his lover (Yetunde) but the angry girl was furious and instead drenched him with a pot of boiled water.
The agonized boy screamed and this drew the attention of other students in the hostel to the scene.
The incident took another unfortunate dimension as Niyi’s ailing father; Pa Adelana who was receiving medical treatment in a hospital in Abeokuta, Ogun State reportedly gave up the ghost immediately he received the news that his son was bathed with hot water.

Police sources confirmed the story and say investigation is on.
When contacted, the Media Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Tope Abiola said that the management could not do anything about the incident because it took place outside the campus of the institution .
He said:

“It’s very unfortunate and we sympathize with the victim and his parents.
“It’s a criminal act; the school does not have power over it. It all happened in Iree town, so, there is nothing the school can do about it. “Notwithstanding, we urge the law enforcement agency to investigate the matter.”
