Prof. Dibu Ojerinde
The 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) usually conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for students applying for first degree studies in Nigerian universities will include a test on the reading culture of applicants.
A statement from JAMB Friday in Abuja to announce the early roll out the 2014 UTME application documents indicated that apart from the usual appropriate choice of subjects, candidates will equally be tested on two general subjects to ascertain their levels of appreciation for reading.
"The public is also urged to note that candidates will be tested on two general books to enhance their reading culture irrespective of their choice of course of study.
The books are; The Successor by Jerry Agada and the Potter's Wheel by Chukwuemeka Ike," the statement from the head public relations of JAMB, Fabian Benjamin stated.
He noted that the board was determined to provide access to candidates desirous of tertiary education and has begun the sale of application documents into the nation's tertiary institutions.
Benjamin explained that the early sale of the application form is to enable every Nigerian child desirous of tertiary education have access to the form on time to enable them prepare ahead for the examination slated for April 2014.
According to him, the two modes of tests hitherto conducted by JAMB; the Paper and Pencil Test (PPT) and Computer Based Test (CBT) are still opened to intending and prospective candidates for the 2014 UTME.
"Candidates across the globe who have successfully completed their secondary school education with a minimum of six credits including English Language and Mathematics are expected to obtain the forms at the designated banks and register with the approved cyber cafés across Nigeria and at the Nigeria High Commission Offices in Ghana, United Kingdom (UK), South Africa (SA), Cameroon, Jeddah and Biu.
Candidates are urged to ensure that their data are well captured at the cyber café and their subject choices are accurately entered," he said.
Also in the statement, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. ‘Dibu Ojerinde, urged parents, guardians and café operators to ensure that candidates are well guided in the filling of the form to avoid wrong filling and unwholesome practices that may affect their choices.
