Ramat polytechnic to introduce 12 new courses

The Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri, Borno State, plans to introduce 12 new courses to provide broad based technical knowledge for its students.

Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Babagana Umara, while receiving a team of officials from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) yesterday, listed some of the new courses to include; food science, computer science, computer engineering, land survey and engineering.

He said the objective was to prepare ground for the technological take-off of the state through sound technical knowledge. Umara said the courses would also assist in achieving the Borno State government’s policy on job creation through technical education.

“We are trying to assist the state government in its bid to address the problem of youth restiveness, insurgency and other crimes by impacting sound and qualitative technical education on our youths. This will ultimately make them job creators instead of job seekers,’’ he said.

Umara said the polytechnic has already upgraded some of its facilities in readiness for take-off of the courses. “We have been able to upgrade some of our facilities in readiness for the courses, although paucity of funds prevented us from achieving a 100 per cent upgrade,’’ he said. Umara appealed to the state government for more funding in order for the polytechnic to achieve its target. He said the polytechnic was already offering about 40 courses in different departments of the institution.
