MINISTER ASSURES ON NATIONAL LIBRARY COMPLETION

Supervising minister for Education Nyesom Wike has said the ongoing national library project can be part of completed projects ahead of the nation’s centenary celebration with special arrangement.

“I was thinking if we work out an arrangement, there is likelihood we could use it as part of our centenary [celebrations],” Wike after inspecting work at the headquarters of the National Library under construction in Abuja.
The minister said he would summon the contractors [RCC] and see how more details could be discussed to complete it.

The project, first planned in 1981 before construction work started in 2006, has gulped some N11 billion, said architect Obioma Opoko, project manager consultant for Odele International Associates, which designed the National Library building.
With two basement floors and eight above-ground floors, the project could cost up to N20 billion when it gets to “practical completion” at the end of 2014, Opoko said.
The consultant estimates the project is more than 90% near completion with some three more above-ground floors to go.

The 80,000-square-metre complex next to the National Mosque is expected to house every reference material published in Nigeria-including those published outside the country but with reference to Nigeria.
