Mikel Obi delighted as he bags TomTom MVP Award
Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has expressed delight at winning the TomTom Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the FIFA Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Malawi in Calabar last Saturday.
The superlative performance of the 26-year-old Chelsea star, was selected as the most outstanding player of the match with a reward of $5,000 courtesy of TomTom, the Official Candy of the Nigerian national football teams.
His efforts contributed in no small measure to the victory that has taken Nigeria a step closer to the 2014 World Cup.
Mikel who attracted cheers from the capacity crowd at the UJ Esuene Stadium each time he touched the ball, revealed that he felt honoured for being singled-out for the award as a result of his performance during the match.
He was however quick to give credit to every member of the Super Eagles whose contributions, he said, made the team's victory possible.
"It thrills me to be rewarded for contributing my own quota to the success of the national team. This is encouraging," Mikel hinted, stressing further that it would spur him to put in more effort as the battle for Africa's five tickets hits crucial stage.
For getting to the final phase of the Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifiers, TomTom congratulated the Super Eagles for a job well done so far.
In a statement by Category Brand Manager, Cadbury Nigeria Plc, Vincent Emokpaire, TomTom commended the players' fighting spirit and skills exhibited which saw them extinguishing the Flames of Malawi, who had earlier boasted of coming to beat the Eagles on home soil in Calabar.
TomTom urged the team to continue its winning streak by remaining focused and maintaining maximum concentration as it faces its last opponent in the final round of the qualifiers for Brazil 2014 World Cup.
Nigeria defeated Malawi 2-0 to top the Group F Table with 12 points and advanced to the play-off stage of the World Cup qualifiers.
